3 And 4 Year Olds That Won't Poop in Potty

Could anyone share ideas how to motivate toddlers that are urine trained to do their bowel movements in the toilet instead of their pants? I have 4 toddlers age 4 and under and they all are either in pull ups or training pants during the day and will pee on the toilet, but not poop. Two of them tend to do their business at naptime when I put diapers on, but not when I put them on the potty right before naps. None of them can explain why they won't. Three are boys and one is a girl if that makes any difference. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I was right there with you. My 3 1/2 son finally about 2 weeks ago started pooping in the potty. I tried everything and nothing worked. I finally shut up about it and he started. I did however get a responsibility chart from Target that has magnets he gets for everyday he goes to the potty.

I totally agree with Shelly C.,forgr the pull-ups and diapers, they are a comfort tool, and fall back, for the kids.My youngest son held his poop for almost a week because he refused to go to the potty(he was "pee-trained"),it was not a pleasant time.Every time I saw him squat,to the potty we went, sitting and sitting and sitting,'til finally mother nature took control of the situation, the "poo" came out in the potty,of course we made a big deal for the "big boy" and had to for some time, finally had to wean him off the poopy praise.I know this is a lot to ask,but it also helps to know there poopy habits,ie. soon as wake ,up noon ,etc- that helps considerably. But I only had one to deal with,if you accomplish this with all your hair in tact,I salute you and the rest will be a piece of cake, well, until they are TEENAGERS!!!!!!! Good Luck

Gummy Bears! Sounds funny but someone told me give her a gummy bear everytime she pottied. So.... it worked. Just one gummy bear and I had to see the potty in the toilet or no treat. Did this for about 9 months then she forgot all about it and just got gummies because she could have them.

go to www.pottytrainingsolutions.com they sell a product called PODS, it is very effective when a child is close to being fully potty trained and needs a little extra help. It has worked for several people I know including my daughter and I recommend it in regard to potty training always.

well, u can try this out..my 3 yr old daughter was wearing underwear to bed at night time and pull ups during the day. she had a bowel in her panties. she told me she did an ut oh and after that she never done it again. she has not wet the bed or anything ..and has been potty trained for almost 8 months. so my advice is to try to tell them when there tummy hurts go to the potty and put underwear on them at night time. if that doesnt help...let me know and i will think of some more ideas....have a good day

Quit with the diapers and pull ups all together. I had a daughter who was the same way. I took her out of everything but regular panties, and she has done well soon. They may hold it in, but it has to come out someday. Keep the potty chair in the same room as them, then they can just go when they need too. Also remind them to go like every 15-20 minutes. Stickers were my best friend during poopy time. And call grandma, daddy, aunts, friends when they do go so that they will want the praise for pooping in the potty. Good luck
Also if they do get constipated during this, try Fletchers oil. It takes like root beer so it isn't ucky, and it is make for children.

My son was the same way. I got in tune with his schedule of going and took his diaper off about 30 minutes before time. He knew he had to go somewhere, so he would go to the toilet. He was rewarded with a toy & praise. After a few days- week at most- he was in the habit and never had anymore problems.

You poor thing. I have a 2 yr old almost 3 with whom we have a hard time. But I have noticed than since he started going to a preschool on Tuesday and Thurday mornings he has become more intrested. He sees the other children doing it.

I know that this also worked for a friend of mine who's son was over 4 would not potty at all until she relented and put on a pull-up. I mean hours without a diaper nothing and then with a pull-up he would go. She was worried about injury. He went to a 4 yr old preschool and within weeks he was potty trained. He saw other kids doing it decided it wasn't that scary, I guess. Also, let him go into the bathroon with daddy when he does his business so it's not so scary.

I just trained my 3 year old twins in July and I had to take away the diapers and pull ups. I had one that pooped once and I had another that pooped 4 days in a row before he finally got it.

The trick is once you take away the pull ups DO NOT give them back. I did not even give them a pull up during bed time. I just cut their drinks in the evening and then make sure they pee a couple times before bed.
