My 3 and a 1.2 month ond son will not lift his head up from tummy position. He's finally comfortable laying on his tummy, but wont do anything from there. When he's being held, he will lift his head comfortably. Any tips?

What can I do next?

I'm sure you've tried this, but just in case you haven't...try getting his attention with a noisy toy to get him to look at what you have or at you. It's still a little bit early to worry about this skill, but it's always good to look ahead. It's great that you are so in-tune with your child's development!

See if you can attract his attention or wait til he's crying and call his name. Also tell you pediatrician about this it might be a symptom of something else.

we had a nurse that would come to our home to check on developmental progress with our very preemie baby and we met with similar obstacles with tummy time and/or floor time. what the nurse told us is that believe it or not babies sometimes feel gravity more strongly when they are on the ground especially when they are just learning to work against it. She suggested we do tummy time for purposes of lifting head etc. laying on the couch with the baby on our chests. It will also encourage the baby to pick his head up to look at you when you speak to him in this position because they naturally follow your voice. Give it a try but don't worry too much all babies do things in their own time!

Maybe try placing a mirror proped up on an angle for him to look at himself. My kids loved mirrors.

I highly recommend seeing a cranial/sacral therapist. My chiropractor is one so I get double the treatment in one session. My son had some issues due to his birth (pulled out with a suction cup thing). Anyway, the treatment helped tremendously, he nursed better and he could sleep in several different positions after a couple of months. You may even notice that he prefers to nurse on one side or to keep his head turned to one side more than the other.

Look for someone who has completed level 2 AND the pediatric education. Go to www.upledger.com to find a CST (cranial sacral therapist) in your area. It is a VERY gentle touch treatment (no cracking of bones).
I really think it will help.

Good luck,
B.
