I'm looking for some opinions here on a situation.
3 boys were messing around/being silly on the bus going home and one got accidentally punched on the nose and was bleeding.
Should the boy that accidentally punched him get punished/written up or not at all since they were all messing around and all at fault?
What do you think?

I'm a bus driver, and if this happened on my bus all three would get written up. Each of them would have a separate write up detailing the specific parts they played, why their behavior is a problem and suggestions on how to correct it and move forward. I would also have immediately stopped the bus and separated all of them from each other.
In the district I work in all write ups are sent to the school principle. How they handle it and what consequences are given are out of my hands, but I do have the authority on my bus to keep students separated and to assign seats and I have and I'm sure I will again.
And as far as Gamma G's statement is concerned...It is obvious you have never driven a school bus. I would challenge you to drive up to 77 students and keep them 100 percent under control at all times while also watching traffic. If you drive a vehicle at all you should be aware that it is dangerous to take your eyes off of the road for any length of time. Add a vehicle that weighs more than 10,000 pounds and fill it with kids and the risk is that much greater. We can't control everything that students do on the bus, what we can control is how we handle it. We also would love to have a monitor ride with us, but it is your taxpayer dollars that pay those salaries, and the powers that be don't see it as a necessary expense.
They should all get written up. They were all horsing around.
I think they all should get written up for messing around.
Distracting the bus driver and stressing out the other passengers is reason enough they should be in trouble.
That one got injured is almost a natural consequence.
I would assume that all three boys would be reprimanded for messing around on the bus inappropriately. If they were not doing that, no one would have accidentally got their nose punched, so I'm kind of "That's what you get." about the bloody nose.
I don't know how old these children are, but regardless of age, they are responsible for their own behavior. All were participating in this goofing off, and all are responsible. The injured kid is no less responsible because he was happily in on the shenanigans until he got punched.
You know that old saying, right? First there's laughing, then there's crying. Well, that's exactly what happened.
I disagree with the poster below that the bus driver is at fault. Seriously, how is he/she supposed to keep eyes on the road AND watch every kid on the bus at the same time? Not realistic. If he/she knew it was going on but didn't stop it, then that is a problem, but there is a lot of opportunity for this kind of thing to happen while the driver's eyes are on the road.
Whatever consequences, all of these boys should share them.

I can't really say since I only have your version. I suspect that the school will give a consequence to the boy who hit the kid because the bloody nose shows that he was not in control of his body. He caused an injury. There is no proof that all 3 were goofing around. If all 3 boys confirm that it was an accident I suggest that all 3 boys will have a conversation with the principal as a,consequence. All 3 boys broke the rule. All 3 boys deserve to be called on it. I doubt that the student who injured one of them will be singled out Unless there is more to the story.
BTW schools no longer punish students. They give consequences along with a conversation with the student so that he will learn from this incident. Talking with the principal is a consequenc.
If anyone gets written up, all of them should. Goofing around and getting hurt go together. It is the same when my kids are goofing off and one knocks the other down. Or anything like that. They all lose.
This is a hot button for me. My hubby was a school bus driver. The kids are loud and full of energy when they get out of school so unless there's something that catches the driver's attention its all just noise. Placing the blame on the driver is b.s. because the children should know how to act. They are responsible for their actions not the driver.
In this case all 3 of the boys would be in trouble for horseplay.
I think they ALL should be written up. They were all messing around; they all should be held accountable.
All three were misbehaving; all three should have consequences for it. He doesn't get a pass just because he got hurt doing something he wasn't supposed to be doing in the first place.
The bus driver is the one at fault. It's their job to supervise the kids in their care. If they are allowing the kids to roughhouse then they're not doing their job. I think all bus drivers should have at least one adult on the bus with them at all times even for the safety of the driver against being accused of something inappropriate. Also for the safety of the kids in the seats who can be attacked and beaten before the driver can safely pull over and get parked to come to their rescue.
So the driver is the ultimate person at fault. Otherwise the kids know better. If they were truly playing then no one should be written up. Drawing back and hitting someone in the face with their fist is a choice they make that says I'm going to hurt you. If there was no intent to hurt that other child then they should not get in trouble but should get to visit the principles office to have a talk about the rules on the bus. That's the extent of what I'd do.
