3 Month Old Rolling to Side; Won't Sleep on Back

We keep reading/hearing that a baby's most vulnerable time for SIDS is 3-5 months old. Our son is 3 months old and already rolling to his side. We put him on his back repeatedly through the night but he just rolls back over again. We're very nervous because of the SIDS factor... Anyone have any experience with this, been told anything helpful by your doctors, etc???? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much to everyone who responded.... This is really a great forum for all Tampa Bay moms, you guys are the best! I should've been more detailed in my description, and realized after reading some responses that I didn't mention that we'd also tried the positioner but he just rolls right over it! I ended up calling the doctor while at work and the nurse said that there's nothing to be done about it once they can roll on their own. We'll just keep everything out of his crib, check on him now and then & hope for the best. It is DEFINITELY nerve-wracking to have kids, and especially a newborn, in the house! Thanks again for all of your responses, we appreciate it!! :-)

Our dd didn't like it on her back at all. So we got one of those sleep positioner things (don't remember actual name). It kept her on her side, but kept her from rolling onto her tummy. I think she also liked it because she felt all snuggled up with it. Our pediatrician said it was fine as long as she didn't roll onto her tummy.

Yep, sleep positioner worked for us too. It's natural for your child to want to roll around a little. I got one with big vents in it because they can be warm.

Dear A.,

The media always over-emphesizes bad news! The actual SIDS statistics are not that high and no conclusive science has been able to figure out an exact cause. Babies, just like adults, like to change the position of their body when they sleep. You can make yourself crazy or you can do the best you can. Parenthood is filled with tons of these delimmas. You can use the positioner to give yourself more confidence and try to keep the baby safe. Use caution with pillows and blankets.

No matter what, the first months of babies lives are very nerve wracking for parents, especially Mom's. We worry about everything when they are so little.

My daughter was the same way. She learned to roll over one way by the time she was 2 months old. Whenever I had her on either her side or her back, she would eventually just roll. As long as there are no toys or pillows nearby, she should be fine.

Side-lying is considered an alternative to lying on their back. This might help to reassure you: http://askdrsears.com/html/10/T102100.asp

DEAR A.,YES YOU MUST BE VERY CAREFUL WITH BLANKETS,BUT YOU CAN TRY TUCKING HER WHILE LAYING ON HER BACK,BUT TRY AND USE A VERY THIN BLANKET AND DONT TUCK HER IN SO CLOSE TO HER FACE THAT WAY THE BLANKET WILL NOT GET NEAR HER FACE. GOOD LUCK

Hi A.,
I am sure everything will be fine. I would be more worried if he was going to his tummy. If he is on his side he will be fine. Sids is from suffacation mostly. As long as he doesn't have any stuffed toys, pillows etc. near him, I wouldn't worry. You can always but one of those sleep positioners too. Good luck! M.
