It appears that my 3 month old has picked up my daughter's cough crud. Now, I can medicate my 6 year old, but what can I do for my little guy? He's breastfed exclusively. Help, poor little guy is coughing in his sleep.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

His personality's still good and it's not a long prolonged cough, but it's definitely not just a single throat clearing cough. He has his 4 month check up in a week, we'll be keeping a close watch on him and his sister. Thanks!

He needs to be taken in to be seen, but my 4 month old has been battling cough/cold/ear infections for 2 months - fortunately, he doesn't cough at night..but his mattress is elevated, he has a cool mist humidifier on in his room constantly, he gets time in the bathroom in the morning during our showers for some steam (which seems to help loosen it up). I was also told when you can hear that gunk rattling, tap him in the middle of the back a little harder than for a burp and it will help jar it and help them cough it up (we do this while in the steam). All of the above has helped us manage his cough. He was put on predisone in November and that kicked it - but he got it back around Christmas.

If you are concerned, which I would be, call the docotor and take him in to see them. It never hurts to have a sick kid looked at. I just had my 14 mo old in last week for her "cold" and they ended up putting her on Albuteral treatments every 4 hours. It did help her so much & now she is doing better and we have worked her off them.

As for over the counter meds... I really don't know of any that can be giving to a baby that young.

Hope both kids getting to feeling better soon.

Most doctors will say that you can't give a baby under 6 months anything - but a friend of mine's dr suggested to give her 5month old some benadryl twice a day (I wanna say like 1/2 tsp - so VERY little). When my son got the crud I did give him some benadryl and it helped wonderfully. Now I have him on zyrtec after seeing a doctor. If he's under 2 the zyrtec will have to be a "prescription". I give my 5 1/2 month old (16lbs) 1mm twice a day. That's what the dr's dosage was.

I know most mothers will be great and just do saline and suction - but none of us could sleep, he was screaming for hours at a time - so judge me if you want for medicating my child. He's happier and so is my entire family.

But definitely do what you feel comfortable with.

at 3 months he should see a dr..it is hard to tell how sick they are when they are little.. maybe the dr can tell you what to do.. run the humidifier.. that helps..
