3 Year Old Back Pain?

Ok, my son has been telling me that his back hurts every so often. I THINK that it's really his stomach and that he doesn't know how to differentiate, even though he is showing me the spot that it's hurting. The reason I think it's his stomach is because awhile back he was screaming about his back hurting and he ended up having the stomach flu. Then he'll tell me that his back hurts and then he'll go to the bathroom and it'll stop (poop). Tonight he said that it really hurt, but he ended up eating 5 pieces of pizza (obviously was hungry, which would be why his stomach would hurt) and said that it didn't hurt anymore. He now says it hurts again, so I told him to go to the bathroom again and only a tiny bit came out. I know he still needs to go.

Here is my question: Is it really possible for a kid to confuse the two body parts like this? I'm a nervous wreck about this when it happens, then he'll end up going to the bathroom and the pain stops, so then I stop worrying. What should I do??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, mystery is solved. Today he told me he was hungry and I asked him where he felt hungry. Well, he pointed to his back. I guess either he is confusing the two places, or his pain (or whatever he's feeling) radiates to his back. I'm SO relieved that it isn't REAL back pain, since I've heard nothing good about children's back pain.

Thanks for all your responses, guys!! :)

absolutely. my daughter said ther neck hurt... think meningitis... worries the mom.. but in fact it was her throat that hurt... as per the dr. exam.

kids may not know exactly what hurts.. and what hurts may not be where the problemis..

you should stop worrying.. but you may want to monitor his BMs... if you cant remember when he went write it down so if it has been more than a day you can try to give him some prunes or something so he doesnt get too constipated.

Hi E.,

It could be that he strained something, but whenever you are worried, get the advice of his pediatrician. Tell his doctor everything you just told us (via email if he allows that) then ask if he should be seen. They almost always say yes because of the liability of ignoring symptoms. Take him in. Get him checked out.

I remember my OB/GYN telling me that I would have labor pains in my back. I thought that was an odd thing to say, but your back is directly linked to your front.

I hope you are able to resolve this before the Holidays. Have a Merry Christmas!

E., my daughter has the same problem. It turns out she gets constipated really easy. I was told by the pharmacy the easiest thing to do is make sure she drinks the Libby's Juicy Juice because it is 100% juice and it will act as a natural laxitive. If that doesn't work there is a prescription laxitive that is in a powdered form that you can mix with anything that you would have to give daily. I am just happy that the juice is working for my daughter. Good luck and I hope this works!

It is absolutely possible for them to get the pain mixed up. When I get really hungry sometimes, it feels like my back is hurting. My daughter, who is 2 1/2 has been saying that her back hurts when she has to go poop. I started trying to keep track of her BM's so that I can kind of tell when she should be going and whether or not the pain is caused by that. It has helped me to differentiate between the hungry pains and the BM pains.

Not to get to graphic, but I have stomach problems (which the drs havent figured out what the problem is), but when I have to go to the bathroom the pain I get is in my back. I would mention it to the dr next time y0ou go in.
