Just curious if anyone has had this. My DD has been complaining for several months about her right knee area hurting. We asked Dr about at 3 year check up and they felt around on legs and told us growing pains. Don't growing pains usually effect both legs? Thinking about taking back to dr. She never complains about left leg and plays very but will complain off and on during the day and wakes some at night. When she wakes at night she is screaming in pain, always holding right knee. Any thoughts??

So What Happened?

Still trying to decide If we should go to dr or not. Still only complaining about the right knee. Usually at bedtime but some during the day.

At age 3 and 4 this happened to my daughter ALL the time. She'd be crying in agony..especially at bedtime or at night. It was growing pains. I would rub her leg/knee/wherever and sometimes I'd give her a children's pain reliever if it was really bad.

I got growing pains and yes, it was both legs I believe even usually at the same time. And it was always at night. One of my daughters has experienced the exact same thing. And she mainly gets them when she's tired anyway. Also, they didn't start so young. I've never heard of growing pains in the knee too. So personally, sounds a bit odd to me. I'd want to have it checked again.

It does sound like growing pains.
Our son had them something horrible when he was growing rapidly.
He'd get them in one leg, then the other, then in one arm, then the other.
It's fortunate it usually doesn't happen all at the same time every where at once because that would be really painful.
Don't worry - she'll get the pains in other places sooner or later.

She's a little young, but my stepsister was less than adolescent when it started it her too ... Have you asked the doctor about Osgood-Schlatter Disease?

Absolutely growing pains. Ours are always one leg at a time.

This is normal.

Half the body grows then the other half grows and back and forth. This is where deviated septums come from and teeth that aren't centered under the nose and a bigger ear on one side or an eye that is a tiny bit different on one side.

This is perfectly normal. For a 3 year old you might want to consider giving them half a dose of Motrin right at bedtime so they'll sleep through any light pain. Not every night of course but if they seem to be hurting at bedtime or if they had pain the night before. For a couple of days until that growth spurt is done and the other side starts. AND each side might be completely different. One side might hurt and make them scream but the other side is...wired differently and never give them a bit of pain.

Growing pains don't usually cause complaints throughout the day and into the night. I would talk to her pediatrician about ruling out other possibilities. Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osgood Schlatter's, etc. While growing pains seems like the likely culprit, I find it concerning that she's complaining "off and on during the day." That is unusual.

Sounds like growing pains to me. My middle daughter has them all the time. Tylenol or Motrin always helps my daughter.
