3 Year Old Started Stuttering 2 Months Ago and Recently Started Blinking

My son started stuttering and having long pauses as if he is trying to think the next word to say - this has been going on for about two months. In the past two weeks my son has started blinking his eyes quickly and opening and shutting with a squint. I have an eye doctor appointment for him next week to get his eyes checked. I plan to see the pediatrician soon after to get an evaluation on his stuttering and eye blinking. When I called the nurse advice line at the pediatrician's office they felt it could be a "childhood tic" and he would outgrow it, but it is wise to rule out everything else. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what was the outcome?

Thank you

So What Happened?

Just an update: Today was a better day for my little man. He did not appear to be blinking as much and only stuttered on the first part of his sentences...getting stuck mostly on the first word...as in Wu.. wu...wu Where is it Mommy? I plan to keep his eye doctor appointment just to remove any fears I have from his recent constant blinking. Thanks for all the post...and I will keep you updated on his progress. Thanks again!

Both of these things are very common in young childhood and specific to boys. The eye blinking is upsetting to watch but try to ignore it. The more you bring attention to it the more he will do it. Childhood tics come and go. They can last a few minutes to a few months. Definitely rule out any disorders of the eye but most likely it is a childhood tic. Some kids are having seizures or allergies too when the blinking is happening. You can get an EEG or try prescription eye drops. Once they begin, tics can be made worse by a bad diet, a virul infection, too much TV or strong odors that seem noxious i.e.bleach when you are mopping the floors. Keep him healthy and keep the tv off for right now. Tics are so common doctors won't even diagnose it until the child has been doing it for over a year which is called a transient tic disorder. If it is accompanied by several motor tics at the same time for a year then it is chronic tic disorder. If they are yelling with tantrums, cursing, swearing it could be Tourette's. Tourette's is genetic in nature. Many kids with tics have a Magnesium deficiency because most mutivitamins have less than 1% of Magnesium. Many kids with tics do well with Calcium/Magnesium supplements. Often the tics will dramatically decrease if not go away all together. Try Rhino Calcium chewables for kids bought at Whole Foods once he turns 4. They have the highest content of Magnesium I have seen in a childhood Calcium supplement. Good luck and try not to worry to much. This is VERY common.

REAL stuttering (t-t-t-t-t-table) or partial word stuttering (The ta- The ta- The TA-ble has alligators under it Mommy!" or "We wen to the store-store-store-store-and got icecream!"

Partial word "stuttering" isn't anything to be concerned over. It's a normal developmental thing that happens when their thoughts start running faster than their mouths can keep up and they have to backtrack OR they do the "broken record" thing while they're thinking... this one later gets replaced with the insidious "Ummmmmmm".

Blinking my son did... so I started fluttering my eyelids at him, big flirtatious cartoon type fluttering. He copied THAT instead... so it was obviously not a "tic" per se (or allergies, or dry eye, or sight problems), but just a phase he was playing around with. Sigh. Unfortunately the girls in his preschool LOVED it, so it was reinforced rather strongly, and my 3 year old became a HUGE flirt for a few years. Then the female sex caught the cooties around age 6, and he quit.

Another Mom, Mimi H, had some great info on detoxing the home. A lot of the cleaning agents we use contain things that are not good for our brains or bodies. She would be your go-to-girl for info on how to make your home safe!!!

Good luck!

I have a 2.5 yr old grandson who started stuttering, mainly at the beginning of a sentence....".I,i,i,i,i, want to go to the zoo"...it is like his mind is going too quickly for his mouth to spit out the words. He also does some of that eye blinking too...mainly when he is being silly or trying to express emotion. His parents have chosen not to make a big deal out of the stuttering, and I think it is something that is going to just go away naturally with time. I wouldnt be too concerned about it if I were you and try not to make too many comments to him about it.

Off hand, I would just say at this age he is adding so many words to his vocabulary that his brain is being overloaded. Just remind him to slow down and think of what he wants to say before he rattles off.

Thanks Jaime B, I couldn't have said it better myself.

SM, I might ask if this coincided with any vaccines? Chemicals contraindicate with each other and vaccines have a lot of synthetic chemicals in them. I'm not saying this is your answer, but it is something I would look at. Is there anything different in your home? I puzzle at the TV show "House" because EVERYTHING they determine is either "auto-immune related, environmental or bacterial/fungal." I do believe, like Jaime shared, that toxins cause a lot of problems. If you think this is a direction that you need more information on, please get back with me. I can explain deeper.

God bless,

M.

A lot of childrens' body washes and shampoos contain formaldehyde and agent orange, cancer causing agents. Disney Clean as Can Bee Hair & Body Wash, Gerber Grins & Giggles Gentle & Mild Aloe Vera Baby Shampoo, Huggies Baby Wash Shea Butter, Johnson's Kids Shampoo Watermelon Explosion Johnson & Johnson, etc. are just a few. Children react differently to chemicals, some children are affected by chemicals and some are not. The best thing to do is to use products that are made with natural ingredients.
