I had my daughter almost 4 years ago and her and I were healthy. This pregnancy at 8 weeks pregnant had to take antiboc. for body producing too much bateria. Now Im 35 weeks pregnant and tested positive for Group B streptococcus, I am scheduled to have a c section in 3 weeks. Will me and my baby be ok, what does this mean being positive for Group B?

What can I do next?

I worked Labor and Delivery. Group B is VERY common. It is a bacteria in the vagina that can pass to the baby during delivery. Mom gets several rounds of antibiotic during labor to help protect the baby. It is a natural bacteria (it has nothing to do with cleanliness or SIDs) It is safe to have a vaginal delivery with group b strep. Since you are a scheduled cection you won't have to worry about the transfer at all. Some hospitals administer the antibiotic with a cection and some don't, either way you and your baby will be happy and healthy.
Don't worry!!!

Its not a big deal either way, as long as you get the antibiotics. Seriously, its super common and really easy to take care of. If for some reason you do go into labor, get to the hospital quick so you can get the antibiotics. I hve had 2 c/s both times I was GBS+. Oh and you still get the antibiotics with a c/s :-) Good luck!

Hi T.,

Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your 2nd child. Group B Strep is only concerning if you're planning a vaginal delivery. From what my OB told me, Group B is something in the vagina that can be passed on to the baby during vaginal delivery. If you're having a C-section, it won't effect the baby. Good luck and take care.

Not to worry about it since you are going to have a scheduled c-section, it should not pass on to the baby as it will not pass thru' the canal. I was too having + for gp b, had my boy in nov. 08, he's healthy.

hope this helps!

I also tested positive for Group B Strep and had a C-section at 37 weeks. We were both fine. They didn't give me antibiotics since I was having a c-section and told me it was actually safer than having the baby vaginally, although that isn't the reason for the c-sec. So no need to worry, I am sure everything will be just fine!
