My 3.5 year old daughter woke up this morning with a loose front tooth. I was pretty shocked because she seems too young for this. I am a little worried. Is this normal at her age? Should I be concerned? Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you for your responses. We saw a pediatric dentist today, and everything is just fine. The Dr. thinks that she may have bumped it to loosen it a little, but says that it is still firmly rooted. (In fact, I noticed this morning that it wasn't moving as much) She doesn't anticipate that it will come out any time soon, but will rather root itself and be strong. She said that my daughter's gums and teeth are healthy as can be. Thank you again for responding! I appreciate the advice!

Not at all. I have 2 girls, 10 yrs. old and 8 yrs. old, as well as 1 boy, 2 yrs. old. My first daughter has her preschool picture (at 4 yrs old) with no front teeth. I worried at first and took her to the dentist. The dentist reassured me, teeth do not know what age they are. They only know when to come out. My other daughter had lost both front teeth by Kindergarden (5yrs old). Hopefully, that helps.

Hi D.,
You should be a bit concerned. Did your daughter hit or traumatize her mouth/teeth in any way? Trauma can cause a discoloration(usually dark) on the tooth. Does she seem to be in any discomfort? She is a bit young to have loose teeth. Is she a thumb-sucker? I would have it examined by a pedodontist(child's dentist) or a general dentist who sees kids. Hope this helps!

Everyone develops at a different rate. When the tooth comes out, within a few months you should see another tooth underneath (usually within 1 month). If you don't see another tooth, bring her to the dentist for an x-ray to make sure there is a tooth. Also, when the tooth comes out, it should only be the crown and not the root also - if the root is still attached, take her to the dentist for an x-ray. Either there is another tooth coming in, or some type of trauma caused her to loose the tooth early.

Right after my daughter turned 4 I realized she had a loose tooth. I freaked out because 6 is the "normal" age for this to begin but the dentist said sometimes it starts early. She's now 4 1/2 and she's lost 4 teeth! Both the bottom and top middle 2. The new teeth are coming in fine and she's the envy of all the kids in her preschool class. It's been much harder on me losing my "baby" than on her. I think your daughter is probably fine as well. If you need a good pediatric dentist, we have one we love. She's great with kid, extremely gentle and has very small hands. My daughter has never shed a tear in the dentists office and she's usually a drama queen. The dentist is Dr. Lily Ghafouri, ###-###-####. She's on Sunset near Doheny. www.toothclub.com
