36 Weeks Pregnant and Fell down the Stairs =(

I know most of you will all say go to the hospital and get checked out but.... I need reassurance right now. So I went to throw a load of laundry in earlier and wiped out down 3/4 of the staircase. Wooden staircase! I am not hurt other than what feels like a pulled/strained muscle in my shoulder/arm area from trying to catch myself and my foot from kicking something on my way down. I clearly just slipped and bounced on my arse all the way down the stairs. I never hit my belly or my tailbone and I feel no pain what so ever in my lower back. I obviously was shaken up from the fall and my nerves were shot but otherwise feel fine. I have a 2 yr old that is now napping and no one to watch her to go get checked out but do you think that if there was anything that I would feel it? I mean if I or the baby were in danger from the fall I would feel it wouldnt I? When I was pregnant with my first I fell going up the stairs at work and landed on my side/stomach so I went in for a NST and thankfully all was okay but it took over 4 hrs at the hospital and I just cant do that with my 2 yr old in tow. Please just reassure me that Im okay and that if any damage had been done that I would now. I mean I should know my body best, right?

Thanks in advance

So What Happened?

The baby is still moving as usual and I havent noticed any contractions or leaking fluid or bleeding

So I went to the hospital for a NST and all came out normal. Thank you to everyone that took the time to offer support and kind words. I feel much better for having been checked out and heard that baby and I are okay

Take it from someone who was in not one but TWO car accidents super pregnant... you'd know if something was wrong!! I bet you're more shaken up than anything else (can't blame you there!) As long as baby is moving and you're not spotting, just relax until you can get to the doctor. Call your OBGYN in the meantime and get their say on it.

Relax mama :) It takes a LOT to get to that baby in there! The bodies natural shock absorbent system is there for a reason!!

I am sorry, but I can't tell you that you are ok. You need to be smart about this and get checked out even if it is inconvienent. I know you don't want to wake your napping baby, but you need to get checked out now. Don't wait. Go to the hospital, put your 2 year old in the stroller and bring her a coloring book/crayons and get checked out!

Be sure you feel the baby move since the fall. If nothing else happens I would assume you are okay. Remember the baby is in water and probably didn't feel the shock as much as you did. I know you never know but women fall often when pregnant and seldom hurt the baby. It's you that needs to recover.

Call your practitioner/OB/midwife. Why haven't you done that? They will tell you to go in for an office visit and likely do an ultrasound and possibly a nonstress test just to be sure.

And no, you wouldn't "just know" if something were wrong with you or the baby. That's why you need to get checked even though you didn't fall on your belly. The baby is probably fine because there's a lot of padding and fluid there to protect him/her but it's just common sense to go get checked out.

Haha, when I was about 36 weeks pregnant I fell down the stairs at the movie theater. It was still dark and my boyfriend and I were trying to get out of the theater before the big crowd. Just as the lights turned on, I tripped and fell down about 5 stairs. The entire theater gasped as they saw a pregnant lady fall. Lol... Good memories.

Anyways, I didn't even think to go in since I didn't hit my tummy. My son was fine :) And to this day my boyfriend still walks in front of me whenever we go down a stair case... Just in case ;)

If the baby isn't moving as much as he/she usually does, then go in. If you are really concerned call the nurse hotline and just ask if you NEED to go in or if there are any warning signs that you should go in for.

I would still call and let the Dr. know. I fell with all 3 of my pregnancies! I am such a clutz - especially when pregnant. With my last I was 36 weeks as well. The had me go in and be monitored for an hour.. everything was fine - but really, better to be safe then sorry.

Please call the Dr.

My last sentence says it all - better to be safe then sorry... please call.

I was 36 weeks pregnant and fell in the garage on ice...on my belly (thankfully my arms took most of the hit as I was able to get them dowsn!) I was hysterical...called my ob and they said as long as the baby was moving as usual no worries. I would let your dr. know, but being this far along if you were to go into labor b/c of it they would probably just let you go...that's what my dr. told me. Sorry that happened...VERY SCARY i know! Congrats and good luck with everything!! :)

My sister-in-law slipped on ice and fell on her butt when pregnant and the baby was totally fine (but she broke her ankle).

As long as the baby is moving normally and you feel ok, I'm sure you are fine. Call the doctor to see if they want to get you in when you have someone available to watch your daughter.

I am sure you are fine as long as you didn't land on your belly. I was about 35 weeks when I fell down on my side in front of my place of employment, in the pouring rain, on the brick walkway. I was so embarrassed it didn't occur to me to be scared! lol

No you do not know your body best. Not in this instance. You could be bleeding internally and not know it. The only ones who can offer you true reassurance are the medical professionals that have the know how and equipment to properly thoroughly examine you and your baby. If you really knew for sure that things were fine you wouldn't be asking us. Please don't rely on a bunch of non-professionals on the internet. Even with having your toddler to deal with yours and your baby's health are too important to take a chance with, go get checked out. Better safe than sorry. Best wishes!

If you are feeling the baby move as usual, things are probably okay - especially if there's no bleeding.

Why don't you just call and ask your doctor?

I think you are okay.
But you can always just CALL your OB/GYN and tell him/her what happened.
And if anything, if you do have to go to the Doctor.... can you have your Husband come home or have a friend or neighbor come and help you?

Well, you obviously already have your answers, but as long as you're not bleeding, didn't break your water, and the baby is moving normally, I would not be worried, ESPECIALLY since you didn't fall on your belly.

What you need to do in this situation is not to head right for the hospital, but to call your own doctor, asap. He or she can advise you on what you need to do, and if that means going to the hospital, then you must do it. You need to have some babysitters on call. Good luck, hope everything is okay!

For the aches and bruises your can take Arnica 30c 4x a day for 4 days. No black and blues to show. If you don't want to take it internally get Arnica ointment and put it on several times a day wherever you hurt.
Go to the doctor. Premature babies are not what you are looking for.
