3D/4D Sonograms

My 21 y/o dtr is 24 weeks pregnant. She has had three sonograms to determine gender. All three were inconclusive. They were unable to get a "clear" picture due to mostly of the postition of the baby.
She lives in a state where they now have 3D/4D sonograms. They told her that they can guarantee her that she will be walking out of the office knowing the gender. If they can not, then she can continue to return till they are able to inform her of gender.
What I have seen on the web, I wish they had this technology when I was pregnant 20+ years ago.
Have any of you experianced the 3D/4D sonograms? What is/was your take on it? Where they able to tell gender right away? What are the pros/cons about this new technology?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I would like to thank everyone for their positive input. Crystal decided that she wanted it done, she scheduled it for Nov 11th, I sent her $155.00 for the session and told her that it will be their Christmas gift from me. They were so thankful!! Crystal plans on sending me the pictures in e-mail.

I would definately read about it, but I think they are wonderful and I think she will most definately know the sex of the baby if she gets one. My sister-in-law had one done a couple of months ago and the detail of it is just amazing. My sister is actually getting one done today to determine the sex of her baby. Between these two people I know and them having it done, I have not heard their doctors tell them that it is bad. You sit in a room and it is put up on a big screen and it really is amazing. I am excited about seeing it again tonight. I hope you guys decide what to do, but I really think that it is worth it. I had my baby 2 months before it came here to Fort Myers and we're not having anymore. I wish I would have been able to do it. Good luck! E.

When I was pregnant with my son I had two 3D/4D ultrasounds. Neither one gave us good results though. The first time the umbilical cord was draped across his face and the second time he had his arm resting on it. We already knew his sex from the standard 2D ultrasound so we didn't even take a peek at that area.

I think the technology is wonderful and the images I've seen from other women's sessions are great! Just tell her not to have her heart set on seeing it the first time around. :)

This is very cool. I got one done only because my husband worked for GE Ultrasound division and they were testing new machines so I got it free. Most insurance won't cover it unless that's what your doctor's office uses. I will have to say it was very cool to see our daughter before she was born and the pictures we got were even better. The problem is, 3D/4D or just regular ultrasound, if the baby is not coopertive, you aren't going to get any thing genderwise. The baby has to be facing the right way for any kind of conclusive results. But just to have it done anyway is worth it. Good luck. Just curious, why does she want to know so bad?

We have a place here that does them. They are awesome! The place here guarantees the sex of your baby at 16 weeks and if they are wrong they will furnish your entire nursery! I did the primo package that cost $750 but I was pregnant with twins and wanted it all. This aloud me to have 3 session which were each 1 hour long and all 3 were recorded on a DVD and a CD Rom for my PC. They also gave 8 color photos and about 50 black and white prints. There was also a veiwing room where the ultrasound was projected on a theater size screen so that my entire family could see. We had our gender at 16 weeks and they were dead on! 2 girls! I had another at 20 weeks and one at 24 weeks. Here is a link to the company we used. You do not have to go all out like I did and can get packages around $150 per session.

My insurance covered this sonogram...it was great. We could see just about everything. The baby was also not in a good position with the other sonograms, but in about 10 minutes of the 4D..we knew we were having a girl.

I had a 3d u/s and they never even looked in that area to see the sex. The pictures are amazing though. My mother-in-law calls it "taking a peek into heaven". It's worth doing, however, they can not gaurantee that they can determine the sex. Like Gaby said it's usually easier to see the sex in 2d. (I'm an L&D Nurse) If the baby is being stubborn then you may be out of luck. The only absolute way to tell the sex of the baby is an amniocentisis. They won't perform that test unless medically necessary. Even an u/s is not absolute. Good Luck.

I had a 4d when I was 23 weeks it was amazing. and they could tell the sex. But this one legs sperd wide open. I think it is wonderful you can really see the face, and all the parts like you are looking at the straight on it is amazing. the only con is that alot of the cost so much money to have done in thoses new sonogram places. so for me that was the concideration but if you have the money I say go for it

I have heard that too many of these sonograms can be "dangerous" to the health of the fetus. It is important not to compromise this little baby in order to tell the gender. You should "Google" 3D/4D sonograms and see what comes up or visit "The Parent's Journal"; all I know is that these things, and all sonograms, should be done in strict moderation.
Congratulations on your grandchild!

I had one done and it was the best experience ever.. It was amazing to see that when he was born he looked exactly as the pictured showed.. If your daughter is really anxious in knowing the sex of her baby then I say go for it.. They can be a bit pricey but if you can afford it then do it...

I absolutely loved my 3D sonogram!!! They got a few good pictures of him as he wasn't too cooperative to sit still for them, but that is pretty much how he is now--very active! I recommend them to anyone who is pregnant because you may or may not see the gender the first time but you can see so many things that are characteristic of your baby! I love them--2 thumbs up! Congrats on being a grandmother!

I had one with my first child 3 years ago and it was awsome!!! He looks just the same, I actually got very lucky, I was the first one to have it done in my doctors office so it was like a new toy for them, I had it put on DVD and walked out with about 30 pictures... However my husband and I did not want to know the sex of our baby... So what they did was put in in an envelope and they mailed it to us after....

I just had another baby and unfortunatly did not get a chance to have it done with her...

Good luck and enjoy the little one ...

Hi! I am a diagnostic medical sonographer and perform 3D-4D ultrasounds everyday. Though, the technology is amazing, it is important to keep in mind that these are medical tests and used to check on the well being of the baby. Ultrasounds are not recommended for entertainment purposes (ex. sex of baby or to see face) only. We perform an entire exam first with a doctor's order (measurements, heart, ect) and then put on the 3/4D at the end. Check the FDA website (FDA.gov and search AIUM-American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine) for their views on entertainment only ultrasounds. By the way, the sex of the baby is best seen in 2D (the regular black and white) views. The 3D/4D is best used for facial images as long as the baby is in a good position (not face down). Congratulations on becoming a grandparent!

I had it done, they gave us a bunch of pics, plus the whole thing on video tape, and each of the snap shots on cd to upload to my computer. Respond back to me with your regular email address and I'll email you a couple so you can see what they look like. I was told it no different from the regular sonograms, the computer is just more advanced that reads the sonograms but they aren't doing anything different to your body. Since it isn't neccessary, most insurance doesn't cover it. I spent about $200 for it, but being a 1st time mom, it was worth it. It is definitely a much clearer picture, but it really is the same thing as a sonogram in the fact that if the baby isn't cooperating, you won't be able to see. We couldn't tell with mine, so she kept making me go walk around to see if the baby would change positions. It was even hard to see her face, with her hands in the way. When she tried to come in at different angles, it would look distorted if she got to close to the baby with it (very scary when you see that! I thought something was wrong with her!) But this place let me come back a different day for free. I believe they do have a limit, but they will let you come back for free a few times until you get a good session. I gave the pics to the grabdmothers & aunts for x-mas when I was still pregnant, and even ordered x-mas ornaments with the pics on them. Since they are uploaded to my computer, I could order stuff like that just like with any other picture.

Hi: I own a 3/D 4?d Sonogram place here in FL. To be honest... gender is not determined with a 3d/4d sonogram better than it would be in 2d. Gender is usually done (and easier to be seen in 2D. When we are called to do a gender determination we usually offer optional 3d/4d as the gender is seen in2d. what probablu happened with your daughter is that it might have been too eatly to determine or the baby was not in position. most 3/4d places should be able to garantee you an answer if not a reschwedule at no charge since usually not seeing the gender is noone's fault. At a later date, or even hour later baby should be in better position. Also please keep in mind that amniotic fluid level, race of mommy, as well as type of body mommy has can make it even more difficult to see in 3d and 4d

I had the 3D/4D Sonogram done when I was pregnant. Its ok. Your insurance does not cover it and they aren't cheap. I spent about 3 hours there because my baby was in a position not good enough o get a good shot. Of course they will allow you to come back until you get a good shot, that is another way of saying " No Refunds". It was a good first time mom experience, but I would never do it again.

Good Luck

My daughter was born in Feb and because of a spina bifida history in my family we were advise to go to a specialist that would do the 3-d 4-d ultasounds. They are amazing!
I am not sure what any con's would be, they are able to detect so much, in my case if there was any spina bifia. THey can detect the sex clearly, she will even be able to see all the chambers of the heart working!
There is a time during the ultrasound that they will use a blue and red color on the screen that shows the blood moving through the umbical cord to the baby! Amazing!
We still have the pictures in her baby book!
When she came out she looked the same as in the pictures!
Let me know if you have any more questions I might be able to awnser.
Congrats on your grandchild, I hope your daughter has a happy and healthy pregnancy.

I had one w/my 2nd daughter who will be 2 in December. They are great!! We could see everything, her little features in her face, fingers, toes, everything, it was truly awesome!! We got a video and a LOT of pictures, big ones on nice photo paper. There were really no cons, they were able to tell the gender right away and we did have to move her a bit but the tech was very patient and just moved her a little and I moved a little and we waited and tried until we could see. She did a great job, it was an awesome experience and there was nothing bad about it at all! Tell her to go for it! Good luck!

Absolutely Awesome! I had a 3-D with my second child and although I had already known the gender of my baby the pictures that I got are priceless. You can see everything so clearly. My son is now two and his face still resembles his face in his ultrasound photo when he was just a 28 week fetus. It's amazing!

While they are a really cool thing to have done and can ease fears for some problems having them done to many times for non- medical reasons may be unsafe.

I only had one done while I was preg. I didn't want to know the sex anyway. That is one of the only "true" suprises life gives you.
