I agree with the other posters about the honey however I would strongly recommend you get the "local" honey. You can usually find it at your local vitamin shop. Stay away from GNC-overpriced. I am getting mine at a local Ace Hardware shop believe it or not! Also Lemon is good as well with the honey.
The only other thing is I was told by a doc once to spray your throat down with the Chloraseptic spray-it numbs it for awhile anyways and I have found that Delsym works really well as well. I hope your little one feels better soon!
If it is worse at night it could be asthma. Thats what my son's main symptom was. I just read where honey is actually as good for a cough as robotussin. You might want to give it a try. I would be leary to use too much cough medicine.
What did the Pediatrician say it is?
Terrible coughs like that can be lots of things/viruses/illnesses.
Prednisone- is used to reduce inflammation & constriction of the airways. It is a Corticosteroid. It is used to reduce "symptoms." NOT 'cure' the illness. Nor does it reduce chest mucus, if present.
Robitussin, depending which one, is either an Expectorant (to expel the mucus) or it is a cough "suppressant" (to reduce the coughing symptoms). Again, it does not 'cure' the illness. Only pacify the symptoms.
Now, IF these things are NOT working, you NEED to tell the Pediatrician, Right away.
ALSO, make sure you can use the Robitussin, with the Prednisone.
Vicks, helps to make breathing, better. Again, to help the symptoms & discomfort. Not cure the illness.
IF her symptoms are NOT getting better or getting worse, you need to take your Daughter to the Doctor, again.
Not just over the phone.
Pertussis, is also a bad chest/cough illness.
Croup
RSV
Pneumonia
Bronchitis
Asthma
Post-Nasal drip/Sinus Infection
are just a few of the illnesses that can cause "coughing."
AND watch for secondary infections and/or Fever, if this arises.
To me, the Doctor should have told you what she has or what is wrong with her. And since the Prednisone does not seem to be helping, then you need to tell the Doctor. Again.
Take her to an allergy doctor. Our son had allergies, and after finding out what he was allergic to, and avoiding those things plus being put on allergy meds, his world was a whole new place. I tried cough medicine, Vicks, and a humidifier, too, before going the allergy testing route. The humidifier made him worse. I found out why after the tests because he was allergic to molds. A humidifier makes the air more moist and all the mold spores that are already in the air get bigger and burst, making more mold.
