hi
my daughters gastroenterologist says my daughter is allergic to dairy. she has been complaining for many months of stomach aches at different times of the day. we have been seeing this dr. now for a couple of months. he told me to give her benefiber and take away dairy. so i did it. she still intermintantly complains. he said the yesterday you can still have bowel irritation. he asked my four year old when we first started seeing him, where does it hurt...so she rubs her whole belly and then he askes my daughter what does it feel like? she said it just hurts sometimes. he asks how does it hurt and what does the pain feel like. she could not describe it. hello, she is 4 y/o. he ran some fecal and blood tests and they were fine. but, i am still concerned because how does he know it is dairy? he hasnt had any further testing. has anyone experienced anything like this and can anyone give me advise please. i am worried it is something more serious. thanks

What can I do next?

I'd love to talk to you directly about some alternative nutrients (not drugs) that you can try. Doctors only know symptoms and the drugs to treat them. They are trained that way. When they don't know what is going on they say "you have an allergy" or "you are sensitive to". Usually they have no idea, so they give you their best educated guess. There is nothing wrong with that, that is just how they were trained. I personally choose another way. I work with families who want to take control of their health and wellness through proper nutrition (vitamins, minerals, etc). I have a client who's 9 year old was missing a lot of school due to "stomach aches" and "head aches". 2 weeks on a good nutrition program and she doesn't miss anymore school. Contact me if you want any more info.

When my son was 8mo I couldn't figure out what was causing his eczema. I asked his chiropractor to muscle test him to see if he was sensitive to any foods. He tested positive to wheat, gluten, eggs and dairy. Since I was breastfeeding I needed to remove these items from my diet. Within a week his eczema cleared up. I would suggest seeing a chiropractor that does muscle tessting/applied kinseology and see what she is allergic to. When eliminating dairy you need to read ingredients carefully. Casein, whey are the same as milk. Many soy and rice cheese have these items which will still cause a reaction. My daughter is allergic to dairy and gets an upset stomach if she consumes it. Good luck.

Didn't have the stomach problems that you did, but we are having an allergy problem with my son. He has a rash that will get better then get worse and his dr. said to take him to an allergist to see if we could find out what he is allergic to. He had similiar testing done a couple of years ago; however, since they are so young evidently the allergies can change (can be allergic to something and then it will go away and may start being allergic to something else). Not sure if allergy testing will help with stomach problems but may be a start. If you find out that an allergist can't help, I would definately get a 2nd opinion to make sure that it isn't something else he hasn't considered. Good Luck

My stepdaughter is lactose-intolerant, and pretty much her stomach hurts and she gets diarrhea when she has cheese, milk, whatever. Her mom gives her Benefiber, but we don't. We give her those little pills for lactose-intolerance that you can buy at the supermarket. They work fine. We give two for a pizza meal, stuff like that.

I would try taking her off dairy and seeing what happens. If she gets better, that's probably her trouble.

Okay-I'm going to give you a couple of comments: You're right--she's 4 yo! Is she constipated? Dairy allergies, in my own experience with my kids, cause diarrhea, stomach aches and also constipation. It sounds like he's just guessing. If there's an allergy -- in his opinion -- go see an allergist (If you want a good one, you can pm me). My children are allergic to all kinds of things but nothing major. One of my daughters is allergic to milk and eggs but she's still able to eat them, with a little bit of diarrhea. Go get some allergy testing done. It's a simple one hour (almost painless) procedure.

Dear Renee,

I don't know how he knew that it is dairy that is causing the problem with your daughter, but I will tell you that the pains are sharp, and they are in the belly and nausea and diarrhea comes when I eat dairy. I suffered from that for many years, and no one mentioned dairy to me, unfortunately.

Finally here I am at 76 and have been not on dairy for about 3 months, except for mistakes - then the pains and bloating and diarrhea come.

There is something new on the market for dairy allergy - called lactagen or something like that. You might go on the internet and see what you can find. It is very very new, and I do not believe that it is a hoax, but you will have to check it out and take the information to your doctor.

I would suggest that you take her off dairy for a while and see how the tummy is without milk and milk products. It won't hurt and it might help. Be very vigilant about what she eats and how she is feeling, so that you will feel when you are ready to take her to the doctor again that you have something to tell him. Of course, I know that you will do that, but just realizing that is a way of protecting her will put your mind at ease.

He probably knew because of her age - that not many things happen to a 4 year old person's body to cause that much pain than lactose intolerance. (without other symptoms) After all he is a doctor. They use a lot of indicators that we are not aware of. You can go for a second opinion if you can afford it. Or, you could do what he tells you as long as you think it won't hurt her.

Sincerely, C. N.

I am so sorry to hear about your daughters troubles. I would take her to an allergist. My daughter is allergic to dairy, eggs, nuts and a few other things. I noticed it when I breastfeed her (she was 3 m/o). If I ate eggs she would get gassy, red in the face and spit up a lot. So I did not eat dairy. When we moved her over to cow's milk she did not react well. She was also allergic to soy. So we put her on goats milk. A close friend told us about it. Goat's milk is a easy to diagest dairy. You can read about on the internet. She is now 3 1/2 yrs. and she is now able to eat eggs, ice cream and other dairy products with out a reaction. We don't give her too much dairy though. Also her excema went away. So try goats milk. It worked for my daughter. Good luck.

Hi Renee, I had a similar problem with my son. He kept urping up after I fed him and kept crying from stomach pains. We had sonograms taken of his stomach, the doctor recommended I put him on medication, and everything. I didn't want to start him on meds so early, so I finally figured out on my own that he was simply lactose intolerant. Did he say she is allergic or lactose-intolerant? If she is allergic, there may be other signs. If it is the latter, it is easier to figure out. Have you watched to see when she gets her stomach pains? Is it usually within 1 hour of eating something with a milk product or does it occur with all dairy products (ex. eggs, cottage cheese)? If it's with all dairy products, then you should take her to another doctor to get a second opinion. If it's just milk products, try giving her soy-products to see how she reacts. There are quite a few things on the market now. The easiest one to try first is soy milk. Mother's Market, Bristol Farms, Trader Joe's carry a wide variety of soy-based products. I truly hope this helps.

Have they checked her blood for celiac disease? This is a severe allergy to gluten (wheat products). My friends 6 year old was complaining of stomacheaches and the doctor kept telling her to sit on the toilet longer but when the stomacheaches didn't go away, they took blood work and it turns out she has celiac disease. The blood test for celiac is very specialized and has to be sent to a special lab in San Diego. If it comes back positive, they will probably to a colonoscopy to confirm. It is a treatable disease through diet. I hope this helps.
