4 Year Old Girl with Arm Pit Oder

Just wondering if any of you have ever had a young child with body oder? I always thought that arm pit oder would only happen once a child hit puberty. It doesn't happen often to my 4 year old; only when she is doing a lot of physical activity.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for the responses. I am just glad to hear that it is not only my young daughter that has this problem. Since it doesn't seem to be a daily issue at this point I am just going to monitor it and when she does have oder just have her wash under her pits. When it becomes more frequent I will definately use your recommondations on the type of deoderant / diet etc. to watch for.

Thanks so much
M.

I would almost 100% guarantee that if you took your daughter off sugar for a month and then only let her have it in small amounts that the body odor would go away.
My mother did a sugar detox (she didn't think she ate that much but still did it) and now does not have body odor EVER.
I would NEVER give a child a deoderant with aluminum in it. Mabey you could use a powder puff to apply cornstarch to her underarms if needed.

Hi M.,

Your daughter likely needs just a deodorant, and not an anti-perspirant, and there are lots of natural ones on the market. Tom's of Maine is a good brand. I would steer clear of brands targeted to teens. They are full of unnatural ingredients, like dyes and fake fragrances.

Also, take a look at her diet. Children are coming into puberty younger and younger because of the hormones in dairy products and meat--do you know where your food comes from?

LOL! when my sister and I were little (younger than puberty age) we always thought our armpits smelled like chicken soup. My dad says our rooms and our bathroom and the hallway between them constantly smelled like "farts and bubblegum". Childhood just smells :)

My daughter has had the same issue since she was 4. Her pediatrician said I should watch carefully for other signs of puberty, but that underarm odor alone is not necessarily a sign to be worried about. She recommended that I wash her underarms 2x/day with a gentle antibacterial soap and use a natural deodorant (like Tom's of Maine) when she needs it. This has worked quite well for her, even through she has sensitive skin.

Mt daughter is the same way. She is now 7 and she has to wear deodorant every day. I did take her to the doctor as it can be thyroid related, but hers was fine. He did say that if it bothered us that badly we could go to a dermatologist. We have chosen just good hygiene and I bought her some 'teen' deodorant.

My son had that issue and the doctor told me that although it isn't common, it's just a natural thing...her recommendation was to find a hypo allergenic deodorant without anti-perspirant.

OMG! I thought I was alone in this. My six year old daughter started having odor under her arms at 5 years old. Not everyday, but like you said when she has been running around and being overly active. I have gotten her in the routine of putting baby powder under her arms daily after she washes up or takes her bath. I didn't want to start her on deodorant too early! The baby powder works wonders and I don't have the problem any longer.

Good LUCK!
