hello moms! my 4 year old daughter has to have 2 pits in her back molars filled. they havent turned into cavities yet but her dentist says she doesnt want them to progress. anyways they dont use needles at her dentist they use laughing gas. im a little worried because this will be her first time and my husband will be with her since ill have to work. im concerned about her asthma and the laughing gas and just for her overall experience. i just dont want her to fear the dentist after this procedure. i take really great care of her teeth and i feel horrible about her having to have work done. i brush her teeth 2 times a day and floss her every night. my husband made the decision to get the white fillings for her so it wasnt obvious that she got fillings done on her back 2 molars. please any advice would be helpful. she goes in at the end of sept. to have it done. she does know she has to get work done. she came home telling me her dentist said she has bugs on her teeth and that she has to go back to get them off.

So What Happened?

thank you all for your quick responses :) my daughter goes to a great pediatric dentist that even has movies for them to watch during their visit while they lay in the chairs. i will be sending her inhaler with my husband for the just in case cause. i will also be explaining to her what will happen and that she doesnt need to be scared. the whole procedure will take one hour and she goes in at like 10 or 11 and should be done by the time i get out of work. im sure that she will be ok. i would just feel a lot better if i got to take her over my husband but ill deal with it. i will get to love on her after i get home from work.

She will be fine! Laughing gas for kids is the best way to go! ( im a dental assistant) She wont be knocked out but she will get very relaxed and will probably tune out what is going on around her. try taking a portable dvd player and letting her watch her favorite movie to distract her. Also just explain to her that the dentist is like a doctor, but for your mouth. and just like how going to the doctor sometimes isnt so fun, like if you are sick or vaccines etc, but they help you feel better and stay healthy. And the dentist does that for your mouth. Plus, the longer you wait on the 'pits' the worse they will be, and the worse the dental visit will be. (Ive had to do a root canal on an 8 year old!) any way maybe since her mouth/jaw may be a little sore afterwards, you can make it fun, and hubby take her out for a smoothie afterwards! I know its nerve wracking, but honestly most kids have no problems at the dentist until they see/hear there parents or other adults talking about how much they hate the dentist or about there horrible toothache. YOUR reaction to the situation will affect HER reaction and could potentially set her up for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums and regular dental check ups or a lifetime of fearing the dentist and avoiding getting proper oral care!

Try not to worry. Tell her the dentist is helping her teeth stay healthy - not that anything is wrong with them.

See if they will consider sealing her teeth too. It may save you future headaches if you can protect her teeth from future cavities.

Also, our dentist warned me about fruit snacks, fruit leathers, and anything sticky like gummie bears/worms, taffy, etc. She said they just get stuck inside their teeth and breed bacteria. And here I thought giving my kids REAL fruit leathers was a good/healthy snack.

My youngest has sensory processing disorder and is a horrible patient when it comes to a cleaning but he turns into an angel or a filling and all he gets is laughing gas.

Just tell them about the asthma. A good trained pediatric dentist knows what they are going and she will be just fine mama :)

Get her teeth fixed. If you don't trust your dentist, go elsewhere.

Don't compromise her health due to your fears.

She'll be fine. I am sure you have told the dentist about asthma and your concerns. They will take care of her.

My grandson who has a sensory processing disorder has his dental work done with laughing gas. He's been to the dentist several times for fillings and still likes the dentist. This is a pediatric dentist who is well regarded in our community. His waiting room is always full when I'm there.

Another pediatric dentist had said she wanted to put him under with an anesthesiologist because he was so hyper. The dentist that he goes to now, manages his visits just fine with the use of laughing gas.

Evidently she has weak enamel, there is nothing you can do to make it any better. Only the dentist can treat this issue. Enamel is inherited.

Our pediatric dentist puts the kids to sleep in the out patient surgery center, they go in, they go to sleep, they wake up happy and ready to go play. I won't ever do anything different.

I once had a dentist tell a young man that if he never brushed his teeth for the rest of his life he would never have a cavity. That didn't sit well with his parents because they wanted the dentist to tell him he had to brush his teeth 2-3 times per day. He refused to lie to the man. His parents fired the dentist. The young man had the strongest enamel that dentist had ever seen in all his years of working on teeth.
