4 Year Old Nose Picker

Our 4 year old daughter has recently started picking her nose to the point where it is bleeding. She is embarrassed when she is caught and we have spoken to her about it. However she is constantly digging. Do I need to consider sending her for allergy testing? Today we were at Target and some teenagers saw her and were really rude and made fun of her. My daughter turned bright red but continued with the picking. I have tried talking about it with her, handing her a tissue, gently taking her hand away, but I am worried that there is an underlying issue.

What can I do next?

How recently?
Any chance she got something up it?
My 2 yr old once got a small clear button (I still don't know where it came from) up his nose. It was WAAAYYYY up there. We only knew because he cried and his nose made a funny noise, if I remember right. When I looked up it I wasn't even sure that there was anything up there. After trying and trying... I finally pushed one nostril down and asked him to blow really hard. The button came flying out. It was one of those tiny tiny baby buttons off of some 3 month old baby garment.
It's just a thought... it could be a fly or something that got up there... you never know.

Hi M.,

If she's embarrassed then obviously she's doing this out of discomfort and not habit. (That's a good thing:) You can fix this!

I agree with the humidifier as that will give her some moisture. I adamantly disagree with the mineral oil in her nose. She can aspirate it and it can lead to a type of pneumonia that can cause death. Any thing with an oily or greasy film will do the same thing. Any physician, epecially an ENT, will tell you this.

Have you detoxed your house? If you remove the irritants at home, then the ones outside the home are easier to fight off. Toxins can cause all sorts of problems besides allergies or allergic symptoms, but this is the first visible symptom.

If you'd like some help detoxifying, I'd be glad to help. If you've already done it for yourself and your child, I applaud you!

God bless!

M. - I have very bad allergies all year round. That said some of my meds dry out the inside of my nose and it bleeds also. My only (cheap) suggestion is try moisturising the inside of her nose with mineral oil on a q-tip. This really helps me and makes the inside of my nose feel much better.

A bottle of mineral oil at WM is under $2.00! So it is at least worth a try.

When I was a kid my Mom told me "my head would cave in" if I kept picking it apart through my nose! But that was the 1960's

Good Luck.

I would have thought the sheer embarrassement of being caught by other people (other than you and your husband) would have remedied the situation. Hmmmm...I am really at a loss for any advice as my children have never made it a habit. The only thing I think of at the moment is that she is getting negative attention from it and therefore feels the need to keep doing it. Have you tried simply ignoring her when she's digging in her nose? I know it's gross, but maybe turning the other way may ward off this behavior.

I'd give the pediatrician's office a call. The nurse will be able to suggest something. Allergy testing may be a good option, or some sort of nasal saline, that will loosen the mucus. Best of luck!

Are you using a humidifier? If not maybe try it out. She might have dried mucous and the humidifier would help. This time of year the air is drier even though we live in Florida. Just a thought. :)
