4 Year Old Riding a Bike?

Hi all! My 4 year old this summer has started loving to ride his two wheeler, but it's with training wheels. I wonder when it's ok, good to take the training wheels off? Are they really necessary? He loves to get on and ride, but when he rides in the yard, there's spots that his back tire goes round and round, because the training wheels keep the tire up, so it doesn't reach the ground. So therefore, he likes to ride in the road, which isn't a really busy road. But I tell him it's ok (on this particuliar road) as long as I'm right there with him. Otherwise, he's to stay in the yard.

What can I do next?

We took the training wheels off my sons bike the summer before he turned 5 because one of them broke. He had basically been riding on only 2 wheels anyway because of how uneven the training wheels were set. So set them really high, or take them off and see how he does. If he doesn't have any problems without them, leave them off. You might want to make sure he has elbow and knee pads, and a helmet for a while though. In NY state helmets are required anyway, even though most kids don't wear them.

If you think he's ready I'd try it. I was around 4 when my parents took my training wheels off, my nephew could ride with out training wheels when he was 3. You can always put them back on, expect burises though.

Take them off whenever you're both ready. We were just talking about this yesterday, in a group of 8 people all over 40.....not one of us ever had the training wheels, just a grown-up to hold the back of the seat for a while, lol. If you are both ready to go then take them off , if it scares him just put them back on.

I agree with Kathy. You can raise up the training wheels so they barely touch the ground. Then remove them all together. We are going through this now with our daughter who just turned 4.

Good luck! (to us both ;o)
