Dear Moms,

I have a four year old little girl. In the month of June 2012, she had an incidence of brownish discharge, followed by yellow, white discharge. this continued for sometime..So took her to the pediatrician who gave creams to apply but it turned grayish, so she was given antibiotics as an infection was suspected and she was itchy. Her urine and swab reports were normal. She was fine through the months of September till December, with one or two incidents of discharge. Now since the last month, I have noticed occasional discharge which is yellow/whitish, sometimes a bit heavy. This happens in an interval of 5 - 10 days and is not continuous. I have noticed this occuring in the mornings maybe just once. Is it normal in little girls and does it go away with time. We have been to doctors multiple times, so really don't want to put our little one through this hassle again. Thank you so very much...

If it were constant... I'd say normal discharge from vaginal secretions. However:

- It comes & goes quite noticeably.
- She's been treated for fungal and bacterial infections in the past for the same kind of discharge

= Nope. Probably not normal discharge. Probably another infection.

As to whether INFECTIONS are normal/common?

Sure thing.

- Especially if she's wiping back to front, or playing with herself with unwashed hands. Introducing bacteria by either method will cause an infection

- Also: Many girls/women are prone to yeast infections

- Also: if she's not keeping herself clean (washing daily)

- Also: If her clothes are too tight (not allowing breathing/drying of the area)

... Its unlikely to be an STI, but still possible. Don't be alarmed if her doctor runs a panel. To know: an STI is not an automatic molestation source. Certain STIs create sores on hands, and anyone innocently helping her wipe could have transferred the bacteria. Ditto if she used someone's towel right after them, etc. Vaginal 'weeping' is a sign of several STIs, and is also how towels, etc., get contaminated. So when a child has repeated symptoms that in an adult would demand an STI panel, most Peds will run one as well, just to be safe. But it can freak parents out.

It is normal for little girls to have a yellowish/whitish discharge. Because she's had infections before I'd call the doctor's office and ask the advice nurse about this.

You mention doctors. I would stay with one doctor, a pediatrician, so that (s)he has knowledge of variations and is familiar with you, her, and her history.

Hi!
Not knowing what it is can be really frustrating! From what you said, I think it might be a yeast infection. Does she have worms too? Does she eat sugar? I would probably take tests to see if she has an infection. And not give medicine for just assuming she has a bacteria. Do some research yourself. I wish you ton of good health!!!
