If it were constant... I'd say normal discharge from vaginal secretions. However:
- It comes & goes quite noticeably.
- She's been treated for fungal and bacterial infections in the past for the same kind of discharge
= Nope. Probably not normal discharge. Probably another infection.
As to whether INFECTIONS are normal/common?
Sure thing.
- Especially if she's wiping back to front, or playing with herself with unwashed hands. Introducing bacteria by either method will cause an infection
- Also: Many girls/women are prone to yeast infections
- Also: if she's not keeping herself clean (washing daily)
- Also: If her clothes are too tight (not allowing breathing/drying of the area)
... Its unlikely to be an STI, but still possible. Don't be alarmed if her doctor runs a panel. To know: an STI is not an automatic molestation source. Certain STIs create sores on hands, and anyone innocently helping her wipe could have transferred the bacteria. Ditto if she used someone's towel right after them, etc. Vaginal 'weeping' is a sign of several STIs, and is also how towels, etc., get contaminated. So when a child has repeated symptoms that in an adult would demand an STI panel, most Peds will run one as well, just to be safe. But it can freak parents out.
