4Th C-section

I have three beautiful children. All of them 9+ lbs at birth, all of them delivered via c-section. My little guy is only 6 months old. My hubs and I were discussing the possibility of having a 4th. I would not get pregnant while I am nursing, b/c there is only so much my body can handle. I figure in a year or so. Or longer if my little man gives me a hard time weaning.

Of course, I am going to talk to my OB/GYN about the risks of having a 4th c-section, before I make a final decision.

I'm just wondering how other moms dealt with so many c-sections and if they had any advice to share.
Thanks!

well congrats on your baby. Yes it is possible to have a 4th c-section. The 4th one does put you at a little more risk as it is the one that places you into a different risk category, but you should be fine. There are a couple of things to consider. 1st talk with your OB first. Find out how thin your uterine wall is and how the scar tissue is from the previous ones. 2nd If you have had any previous uterine surgeries, this places another risk for you... I your primary (1st) c-section was due to having a big baby and not progressing with labor, then it should be fine if the uterine wall is not thin or too much scar tissue. 3rd Please wait.... You are wise to wait. Let your uterus heal longer than 6 months and gain the basic tone back. This will degrease your risk for complications too. Close spaced pregnancies is a strain on a uterus; especially while breastfeeding. 4th Regardless of what others are saying here.... After 3 c-sections there is NO WAY you should consider a VBAC; especially never having had a vaginal delivery... I do not think you will even find an OB that would agree to that....
So I hope this has helped. Congratulations on your recent baby and giving him the gift of Mother's Milk...

I'm actually beginning to become conviced that with each c sec you have, they seem to get easier (i.e. recovery/what to expect/worries). My 1st one wasn't so bad and my 2nd was a piece of cake, both the actual c sec AND the recovery.

I agree with you that you should probably wait a short while between the 3rd and the 4th, as you may not be entirely healed on the inside yet. Otherwise, talk with your OB about your concerns but I'm thinking you should be just fine, probably even better off than the mom who's going through it the first time.

I think it depends on your body somewhat so talk to the doctor who did your last one (they know what you look like inside). I had a failure to progress c-section with my first and it healed well. I tried for a VBAC and ended up with a miserable emergency c-section that got infected (the emergency had nothing to do with it being a VBAC). I don't think my body would do well with another c-section but if you had planned sections that healed well that is a different story. I have met at least one person who had 5 c-sections so sometimes it works out.

Make sure to do your research. ACOG recommends no more than 2 cesareans, and states that after two, your risk goes up significantly with each one. Be sure to get current statistics and once you know what the documented risk is, whether you are comfortable in taking it. Good luck

Crystal,
I don't know what doctor or hospital you are using but I had 3 c-sections and then 2 vaginal deliveries. My doctor is out of Hamden/New Haven and I had my last 2 at Yale. Also my c-sections were done at the old Meriden Wallingford Hospital and the doctor is very much retired (thank God), my last c-section was not done right and I ended up with major problems (if you are interested e-mail me and I will gladly tell you, I wouldn't want anyone to go through what I went through) so I went to a doctor who came highly recommended and have been with him ever since. If you have to have a 4th c-section and your doctor doesn't have a problem with it then I say go for it. I am so glad I have 5 children even though my oldest and youngest are 16 years apart, all of them are extremely close.

I understand that the number is 6 on the same cut now - if you had a horizontal cut (side to side across under your belly button). However, if it is not possible to make another cut on the same one they can also do a vertical cut. Vertical cuts can only have 2-3 deliveries.

I have had four and my OB's wife has had six. It went pretty much the same as all the rest. I think I am better at getting them cuz I know all the ins and outs.
