My son is going to be 5 months next week and he came down with H1N1 last week, this week he is much better (no more fever and not wanting to nap every hour). Before he got sick I would put him down for bed anywhere between 7:30 to 8:30pm and he would wake around 6am. Sometimes he would wake at 5 or 5:30 but I would give him the pacifier and he would go back to sleep. Now I am still putting him to bed at the same time but he is waking multiple times in the middle of the night and doesnt want to go back to bed. He just cries. Is this because he was sick? Will he continue to do this? How can I get him to go back to sleep on his own? I am also very worried about the time change coming up....and how am I going to get him to make the switch too?? Please help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. He is still crying mult times in the night. I let him cry a little before I go in and check on him. Sometimes he falls back to sleep and others I have to go in there a few times to sooth him. He is teething...he already has 1 tooth showing and I can tell during the day that his mouth hurts so I know that could be a factor. I will keep plugging away and hope that he will soon not wake as much. LIke everything I have to remember that this is just a phase...and it will pass. :)

My baby girl just turned 5 months this week. She's been waking once during the night for several weeks now. One night recently she slept through the night. She used to sleep consistently through the night, too.
I think the culprit is the 2 teeth that are poking through on the bottom gums. I think the pain must wake her/disturb her during the night and then remind her that she's hungry because she demands a bottle when she wakes at 2 am -ish.

So perhaps, your little guy might be teething?? Can you see if the bottom gums (front) are swollen? They'll be swollen/reddish before the teeth poke through.

Mother of 5 here...When kids are sick-especially any kiddo under 1 1/2 yrs old-schedules and routines go straight out the window. Treat and care for the baby. All the crying is because-as little as he is-he knows something is very wrong and he hurts-body aches-and he can't breathe-we always used a steamer for that-- and he is just generally miserable and crying is his only communication..AND, BOY, CAN BABIES COMMUNICATE!!! Just remember how you feel when you're sick. Don't worry. You'll both get through this. Later...

He still may feel bad or like the others said teething could be the culprit. Just comfort him and let him know you're there and he'll get back on schedule in time. You could give him some Tylenol for the pain, if you think it is his tooth, but I would check with the pedi first since he is probably still on meds from the flu.

it might be coincidental b/c their sleep habits start to change right about this age b/c of teething, etc. my first was sleeping through the night by 3 months then started waking up again around 5 months. i would just go in her crib and try to soothe her with out taking her out of the crib.

When my son turned 6 months old he bagan doing the same thing. I started to give him a little cereal before he went to sleep and that helped. But he is 9 months now and he occasionally will need to be rocked to sleep when before he would put himself to sleep.

My 6 month old used to sleep all night or most nights just wake up once. He is now waking up at several times at night. A couple times he seemed to get cold since it got cooler at night than I expected so I hadn't dressed him in a warm enough sleeper. He also started solid foods recently & is probably teething. My older son is now 2. He went through the same phase & started sleeping better at night by 10 months (unless he had more teeth coming in or was sick) Everyone says to remember that eventually all kids sleep through the night.

He may still be feeling ill and need some comforting, maybe you cold go back to swaddling him even if it's arms out. Try to soothe him with pats and strokes if you must pick him up cuddle ,rock but avaoid talking, singing and playing with him. I close my eyes and barely open them to check on her status, when she sees my eyes closed though she tends to close her own.

I am very glad he is felling better.

If he is teething I highly recommend Hyland's teething tablets. You can find them at just about every drugstore. They melt very easily so you can put them in a syringe with a little water with no grit.

Good luck, let us know what happens.
