5 Year IUD Question

I have an IUD (Meridian?) that I had 'installed' in December of 2003. I never had cramps before, and after I got it I would get occasional cramps; doctors said this was normal for up to a year, because you body was adjusting to a foreign object in it. Well, they eventually did go away, and I would have an occsional cramp that lasts a few minutes once every few weeks. But the last few days, I have been getting cramps that are worse and last much longer, over half an hour. I was wondering if anyone else had this issue with thier IUD?

Also, I read that the longer you have the IUD, the less effective it is (99.9% effective the first year, but it goes down the next 4 years). Has anyone else heard this, or gotten pregnant with an IUD?

I am talkign about the new IUD's that are plastic, not the metal ones from a long time ago. I heard lots of horror stories about those!

I wish I had an answer. I also have the Mirena IUD, but have only had mine since October '06. Visit the Mirena official website. It has eleviated all my concerns thus far... Here is the freq.asked q's link:

Hi.I actually had the same IUD and had to have it removed because it was causing my cycle to be really abnormal then I was getting false positive pregnancy tests and I was CRAMPING HORRIBLY!!! I had it for almost 2 years and it wasn't "problem free" but a friend of mine had the same one and hasn't had a problem. I think it depends on your body and your cycle. If it's too bad go to the dr and make sure its in place (and in the right place) and if it gives you that much trouble have them take it out.

I have an iud in also but its the cooper T , you said you heard lots of horror stories about it and trust me its not worse then the Mirena . I work as an online guide and IUD is my main keyword and if you go online and see the comparison on Mirena and the Cooper T , you'd want to get that out very quickly.

I've had cramps while having the iud in but its not that bad. It comes for a couple mins then it goes away , its so mild that I don't even have to take anything for it to go away.

I have this IUD. I have not heard that the effectiveness goes down each year. That is something people would need to know. Where did you hear it from?
I have an occasional twinge of a cramp about once a month. I guess it could be ovulation, too. I got the Mirena after my son was born last September. I spotted for a month and then nothing. I was breastfeeding until about 2 months ago and still don't get a period. I have very light spotting for about a day once a month now. I am wondering if this is how it is going to be. I don't get cramps, but I get super bitchy now before what would be my AF.
I would call your doctor and ask about the cramping.
