Hi,
I took my 5 yr old to the pediatrician today to get a well check. He failed his hearing test! Not the kind that they raise their hand when they hear a beep, the one that measures the echo of their ear. He passed the sound one when he entered kindergarten. They said the result was referred. She is putting him on zyrtec and nasonex, allergies meds, for a month and then will retest. Has anyone experienced this and what did you have to do. He does not seem to have any obvious hearing issues and speech has never been an issue. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Has he been sick? I guess they felt his ears were blocked by excessive fluids from allergies? My son's ears would sometimes be blocked by earwax. He seemed to generate a lot - not so much anymore.
I'm not a doctor, but I try to avoid medications for my kids' allergies. You might try taking him off all milk and sugar for a while. I find that calms allergies. Sugar is an inflammatory food, which could be why it seems to kindle allergies and asthma.

The allergy meds and the hearing test did not go together... so I am confused.... Does he have fluid in his ears? If he is not sick, he does not need to take this medicine.

When my DH was a child he had hearing problems that turned out to be a build up of wax. His ears need to be cleaned out from time to time.

My son failed the same type of test @ 5 years old. He had ear tubes & his adenoids removed. They said when they got in there he also had a sinus infection. Good luck!!

Port Jefferson you are really far out on the Island. Such a beautiful place to live.
Did the pediatrician check for earwax build up?
It is extremely common with children this age.
Warm some olive oil not too hot just a bit over body temperature. place it in the ear just before bedtime and put a pad of cotton over the ear. Tape it in place. While he's sleeping the ear wax will melt. In the morning it will have move up to where you can just remove it.
Do the other ear another night.

This is relatively common in small kids. The actual hearing is OK or good enough, but the test they did measures how much the ear drum can move, and that is decreased when there is a fluid build up. It can happen after a bad cold, for example, or due to allergies. The medications he's being put on will help to dry up the fluid that is there and prevent more from building up. In most cases, when they are rechecked, everything is OK, so I would recommend to give it a try.
