5 Year Old Failed School Hearing Test

We got a note today that our daughter needs to have a follow up on her hearing test that they did at the school. She's never had ear or hearing problems (just not listening...LOL), no ear infections, wax, speech problems, or any other indicators of a hearing problem. Has anyone had this happen? What was wrong? Was it failed at school and fine at the doctor? Thanks!

Edit: I did kinda wonder if she didn't follow instructions or was fidgety, I wouldn't doubt that a bit! ;)

What can I do next?

Follow it up at the doctors, and then if it is fine, report it to the school. At five many kids don't understand the instructions about the hearing test.

And my son failed because of ear wax lol!

I had the same problem with my son at the same age. I knew he had great hearing because he had tubes in his ears and we went to an ENT for 3 years. I asked him what happened he said he was nervous and decided not to raise his hand when he heard a beep. Ask your daughter how the test was. Either way no big deal to get her checked. Usually it's nothing. My Gf was sent a note home and she took her son in and all was fine. It depends on the machine, technician and enviornement, but I wouldn't worry.

I would have her hearing checked by a profesional. SHe could have a slight hearing problem and you would not even know.

She may have simply not cooperated with them for the test. My boys act like they don't hear people talking to them if they don't want to talk. They can hear a whisper across a room so I know they can hear just fine.

We have a little girl with severe learning disabilities at church. She is adopted by an older family. She has had multiple hearing test given by the state while she was still in foster care and they insist that she is profoundly deaf, but she can hear birds chirping outside or her adoptive parents calling her from behind in a whisper. I think she just choose not to cooperate. She does not talk, but they know she can hear because she imitates the birds chirping outside when she is in the house with all the doors and windows closed and the chirping is barely audible and she will turn when you whisper her name from behind. The adoptive parent have told them that she can hear and explained how he knew she could hear and they basically told him he was crazy and that she definitely can't hear anything at all. LOL. I do agree that she is about half blind, but she is not stone deaf. She can hear.

Our younger son 'failed' the school test as well. I skipped our doctor and made and appointment with an ENT. He passed the test there just fine. They said the school environment is noisy and distracting so the results are never accurate. Definitely get a test done though because you never know.

My daughter failed the test, too. Her pediatrician checked her and said there's fluid inside her ear. Does your daughter's test report mention "conductive hearing loss"? The prdiatrician said it doesn't affect her listening, just you have to watch if the fluid will come out. Don't worry. Probably nothing serious, but it's better you see a doctor.

A friend of mine thought the same thing when her daughter's Grade 2 teacher told her to get a hearing test for her daughter as she couldn't get her to engage in class activities. Anyway, she had never had a hearing test before as the line-ups were always too long at the school ones and my friend never even imagined there was something wrong with her daughter's hearing as her daughter spoke normally, followed her instructions fine, etc. Anyway, she did get a hearing test and found that her daughter was indeed slightly deaf and needed hearing aids and no one had ever suspected anything until the girl was 7. Maybe the test didn't work or maybe it was never caught before. You should follow up with your doctor...

First of all, it's only a preliminary test. However, these tests are administered for a reason, and what a boon to have these results early! Hearing issues are often hard to recognize, and sometimes there are no signs.

The school my two children attend is screening on Monday. While I hope my kids go through the screening fine, I'm not sure what the results will be. However, knowing something might be wrong is better than not knowing. Your doctor's assessment will say far more (and that is why the screening didn't indicate exactly what was going on--and suggested she see her doctor). I know that false alarms are common enough, but try to make sure that you go to the doctor as calmly as possible. Your child is still your child, still wonderful, still fantastic... and if she does have hearing issues, they are likely to be workable, since she has shown no signs of them prior to this screening.

I would not worry. But I would go to the doctor to find out exactly what is going on (if anything is). Good luck!

TJ- I wouldn't worry too much about the school hearing test. Definitely take her to your regular pediatrician, but I have to think she was probably just a bit nervous. Mom's not there, other kids are around, maybe she didn't understand the directions...a multitude of things could have happened.
My mom took my brother to the doctor to get his hearing tested when he was about 6 years old. She was worried because she was constantly talking to him and calling his name and he just completely didn't hear her! So, in he goes for the test and the doctor comes out a bit later laughing. He tells my mom, he can hear an ant crawl!! He's just ignoring you....grrrr....
If you haven't noticed anything at home than you probably have nothing to worry about, just make the appointment and breath easy.

We had that happen with a vision test. Turns out she really needed glasses, BAD! Her vision was pretty messed up. I always thought she was stubborn because she wanted the story RIGHT IN FRONT of her! Turns out she couldn't see! Talk about mommy guilt.
She failed the school test, failed the pediatritions test, failed the eye doctor test...now she has glasses and is doing great! I am so thankful we found it before Kindergarten started.
I know you were only joking, but maybe it is that she can't hear well and not that she isn't listening! Just because she has never had any problems with her ears, doesn't mean that she can't have hearing problems. better to get it checked out (which I am sure you are already planning)...

The hearing and vision tests given at schools are usually quick "screenings." If something seemed off ( could just be not following, or understanding directions, fidge-worm syndrome) that they refer you to get it checked. Don't panic.

My daughter failed the school test twice and the test at the pediatrician. She had a follow up with an audiologist and she passed. The audiologist explained that sometimes the equipment used and environmental noise contributes to those failed tests.

Our boy had a hearing test by the school system. We were a block away and my friend was babysitting him. she took him in the door as we were going through the light much less than 1/2 mile away. No lights, no traffic, no slow drivers, nothing. By the time we drove less than 1/2 mile going 35 Mph, he was walking out the door and had "heard fine".

The pediatrician did a yearly hearing test about a month later and he had to do it 3 times before he responded correctly. We made an appointment with an ORL doc and he had to have tubes in his ears, they had excess ear wax and he couldn't hear very well because they were plugged. I think I would take your child to a specialist, an ORL doc and have the testing done by a professional.

I would't be alarmed, but definately do follow up. My son failed the newborn hearing screen at the hospital and the nurse told me that it was probably just fluid in his ears and no big deal ....so I went months without doing any follow up and ignored reminder calls about it. When I finally did the testing I found that my son really was partially deaf and I wish that I hadn't put it off for so long. He wears hearing aids now and he does great! If there's something going on it's good to find out as soon as you can. It may have been a flawed test, but don't be afraid to find out for sure. If she ends up having a little bit of hearing loss then it really isn't a bad thing and wearing hearing aids is not that much different than needing glasses. If need be, you can contact me .. I have lots of great resources and experience I would be happy to share! Hopefully she hears just fine, but either way she'll do great.
