5 Year Old Sick Too Often!

My son gets a fever associated with a cough and/or runny/stuffy nose at least once a month. Yesterday we got home from outside around 3:00 and he had a fever of 102. I did take him to the doctor a month ago thinking he had allergies because of the runny/stuffy nose all the time. She said no allergies cause his nose wasn't itching? And that it's normal for children to get 9-12 colds a year! I couldn't believe what she was telling me. I never got sick that often as a child nor did anyone I knew. My friends that have kids their kids don't get sick as often as mine. I feel bad for him. He's healthy active with no known allergies. I don't understand what's going on. I'm thinking I should go to another doctor for a 2nd opinion. His class size is now 12 was 9 two weeks ago, the school's total is about 30. So I know it's probably not that he's with so many kids all day. Again, I don't know.

She also said the only reason to keep him home from school is fever. Anyone's pediatrician told them the same before? Anyone experienced this with their child? Should I get a 2nd opinion? Advice/experiences please and thank you.

What can I do next?

If you want to boost your child's immune system, get him Echinacea with Goldenseal. Also get him on some Good Probiotics, I would recommend one with more then one kind of bacteria in it. Also give him a high quality vitamin. The Echinacea and Goldenseal should be used for 3 week on and three weeks off and then three weeks on and so forth. I get everything at Whole Foods.

You sound just like me and we both share the same first name...how about that?!? I had the same problem when my now 5 year old attended daycare. As an infant, she always caught colds from the toddlers and I couldn't understand why other parents weren't giving their children some vitamins. One lady would bring her 2 children every day with bad colds. She would rush them in from the car to the daycare in the winter w/o coats. I heard what sounded like an old man coughing and it was her 3 year old daughter. I was terrified about leaving my baby that day.

Anyway...let me get off my soap box and answer your question. My pediatrician said to me "if you think she's getting sick now...just wait until she attends school." Well, she is now 5 and has been in preschool and guess what... this has not happened. I give her Koala Pal vitamins from Melaleuca. The preferred customer price is about $8 and they have over a 90% absorption rate. She's also around kids at Sunday school. 9-12 colds a year is down to about 3 or less. My husband and I get our vitamins there too and in 3 years, we've haven't had the flu [or a flu shot] let alone a nasty bad cold.

Anyway, if you'd like to shop at Melaleuca, let me know. I can show you how to get the same preferred customer price we get. www.melaleuca.com

Usually. mucous from the nose that is without color is from allergies...

I would look at doing something to build your sons immune system so that he is better able to handle the insults he is being exposed to. A good homeopathic store should be able to help you with this.

Also a more holistric practioner.

My 9yr old daughter was in day care from 4mo - 5yr old, and she had the runny nose, ear infection, pink eye in the beginning, but she is now a very healthy child. So I agree if this his is first exposure to a large group of kids on a daily basis, then he will probably get a good number of colds.

Hi M.?

Was your son in daycare prior to starting school? The reason I ask is that if he is just now starting to be around other kids on a daily basis, then yes it is normal for him to be sick this often. It is true that kids get 9-12 colds a year and my son is almost always sick as well. But my son is only a year old and he has been sick almost constantly since beginning daycare at 9 weeks old. My doctor said this will continue till he is about 2 years old, but that if he wasn't in daycare he would have instead been sick all of the time when he entered school.

So I guess my point is that if you were lucky enough to have a very healthy infant, you were just delaying the inevitable for a few years!

Good luck!

M.,

When I call the peds office for our 22M old son and they put you on hold, they have a recording playing and in it they say "It is not uncommon for children to have 8-10 colds a year" or something like that. So, I guess it's pretty normal. Just thought I would mention that.

BUT, if you are uncomfortable at all with your doctor, it never hurts to get a second opinion!
