You can ask the pediatrician if he has big tonsils or adenoids... Does he have allergies? It's worth following up but I wouldn't hit "panic" mode yet. Try getting him to sleep on his side...
My five year old son snores. I don't know if I've just become more aware of it, or it's gotten worse in the past few weeks, but it's LOUD and seems to be most of the night. I've been checking on-line and have read a lot of stuff and will call the pediatrician when we get home from vacation... I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has had an experience with this and what happened? Thanks...
The pediatrician says his tonsils are enlarged...lots of drainage back there. Looks to be some kind of allergy reaction. Hard to pin down since we've been traveling a lot in the past few weeks. She recommeded 6 wks. of Claritin at night, 3 wks of Nasonex spray at night and running a humidifier in his room. And then we'll see where we are. Thanks for your responses.

just to confirm, my son snored horribly before he had his adenoids removed, but you need to see an ENT. good luck! and just remember, that even if they are removed now, they may still grow back, my father's did!
My now six year old daughter had to have her tonsils and adenoids removed when she was four because she was snoring and having some sleep apnea. The doctors tried allergy meds before sending us to an ENT but, they didn't help. The best thing you can do is see the pediatrician soon so, that she/he can start narrowing down the problem. Good luck!
You need to tell your doctore to refer you to a Ear, Nose, & Thoart doctor.
i could be what the other ladies said adnoids or tonsils but here's a 3 option. it could be an allergy / sinus problem if its just starting to show in the past couple of weeks. my kids always snore when they are having allergy/sinus trouble. deffinately take him in to the ped. maybe even call and schedule an appointment for when you get back.
Chiropractic can help this so much!
When my daughter had tubes put in her ears, the ENT asked about snoring. He told me that if it is a loud snoring that almost makes you want to laugh, then there is probably an adenoid issue and they should be removed. She did not have that problem, but I do have another friend who's little boy did have to have his done. I would talk to the pediatrician about it, but I am sure it is nothing serious. Good luck!
If it is that bad, I would take him to a ear, nose and throat specialist. Pediatricians might help and then they may just put you off without helping him at all. It could be his adenoids are the reason he is snoring.
My son had big adenoids and snored from the very beginning really loud. He had surgery to remove his adenoids at the age of 3 and has been great ever since.
I have a son that snores really bad as well. My son was about 6 moths or so. We went to the ENT and they gave him a medicine called Nasanex. It didn't work. We kept going back. The ENT told me that my son was going to have to have his tonsils and adenoids out. He was 17 months old at the time. We got them taken out. This was the worst time of my life. My son would not drink, eat nor take his medicine for pain. We ended up in the ER b/c of a 104.8 fever. They gave him some fluids and sent us on our way. The fever did go down. It took a little while to get him to eat. He did finally drink something when I decided to give him milk (which they say don't do). I thought that this would solve all the problems. Well it didn't. My son is now 3 years old and still snores. We went through the sleep study and everything else. The sleep study revealed that when he would sleep on his stomach or back he would snore. They told me that if I heard him snoring that to flip him on his side. I do that now and he stops snoring. Also, when we got his adenoids and tonsils out I thought that it would make him much healthier and less sick, it didn't work! He suffers from asthma and I don't know if that has something to do with the snoring or not. I told his allergist about it and he wanted to give him more nasenex. Hope that this helps, trust me there were a lot of very restless nights with me worrying about my little boy!!! Good luck. I use a ENT at children's healthcare of Atlanta in Lawrenceville.

Hi S.,
My five year old had snored from the time he was a baby and when he was three he had his tonsils and adnoids taken out and has never snored since. He sleeps much better at night and is finally getting the deep sleep that he needs!

my 4 y.o. was snoring a year ago and her ent took er adenoids out. The snoring stopped that day. My 2 y. o. has just started snoring and the ent did an x-ray to see if his adenoids we large and they are so we are getting ready to have his taken out. If it is just the adenoids that have to come it is a two day recover at home. (no school) which my daughter was wanting to go back the next day.
My daughter now 11 used to snore too and her paediatrician would not do anything about it saying that she would grow out of it so I did my own investigations and found a homeopathic product that stops the snoring temporarily... it worked for her because she doesn't snore anymore and sleeps more comfortably at night. Good luck.
It could just be sinus's I would get worked up and to worried just yet. I have a child that had out his adenoids and so have I we both still snore we also have allergies. We both snore when we are having problems with or allergies or sinus's. Don't know if this helps but it's our situation I am starting to think there's no fix for snoring.
My son had the same problem when he was two years old. We took him to an ENT doctor. He had to have his tonsils and adenoids removed. We had him checked for sleep apnea, just to be sure...
Hi! Snoring in children is more common than you think. I learned about that from working in a classroom for many years!(many do it in class) I also learned that children who snore are most often sleepy in class and don't concentrate well, therefore they don't learn as fast.
I recommend that you talk with your pediatrician about this. They will probably recommend seeing an ear/nose/throat specialist to see if the adnoids/tonsils need removing.
After retiring from the classroom, I was nanny for twin girls for 2 years. One of them snored loud from the time she was a year old. She ended up having her tonsils/adnoids removed a little before age 2.
Good luck, I am sure it will all work out fine.
You may want to have his tonsils and/or adenoids checked. Snoring is sometimes caused from inflamation. My daughter had her adenoids removed but still snores a little at times. She had more symptoms than snoring, though.

I am a retired teacher, who is now mostly substituting with Pre K through 1st grade. In Pre K and Kindergarten, it never fails that we have at least one student that snores. It's nothing unusual, as you will find out when you check with his teacher.

My son snores like a truck. They took his tonsils and adnoids.Often in young children enlarged adnoids is the culprit.Nigel still snored. They did a sleep study to check for sleep apnea. It was negative but he does still snore.
Sounds like we had the same experince as many others. My daughter was snoring, and really restless at night. We took her to an ENT (ear, nose, throat) and her adenoids were HUGE! We took those and her tonsils out which were also large and that solved it all. If felt bad putting her through that, but it was worth it!! Dr. Robb, in Alpharetta is the ENT we saw. We really liked him and he was VERY knowledgeable. Good luck!

My daughter started snoring very loudly at around 4 or 5 years of age. It was awful. We travel a lot for soccer and it was impossible for anyone else to sleep when the whole family was in a hotel room together. Our pediatrician said she snored because her tonsils were really big but that we should not have them taken out just because of that. He said she would eventually grow into them. I decided to get a second opinion and took her to a ear, nose and throat dr. He said that her tonsils were so large that they were interferring with her sleep which would affect her whole day since she would be tired. He said it could also affect her speech, school performance etc, and that we should have them removed. We did (it is just an outpatient procedure) and she was in pain for a few days because she is stubborn and refused to take the pain meds but then it was wonderful! No more snoring!!! She had been a rather small child and she even grew quite a bit after the surgery. Good Luck!

I noticed my daughter snoring at about that same age. She also would take long pauses before her next breath when she was in a deep sleep. I took her to the pediatrician who refered me to the ent. They removed her tonsils and adenoids. That seemed to fix the problem.
