Over the counter: Children's clariton or zyrtec. Generic is fine. Benedryll also works but may make your child drowsy (or hyper).
You can also use saline spray to help clean out the sinuses to help prevent an infection.
Allergycontrolproducts is also great for encasing bedding, etc.
Also eliminate as many chemicals in your cleaning. vinegar and water cleans almost anything.

If it's seasonal allergies, I've heard that a spoonful of locally produced honey every day is supposed to help. Otherwise, as far as I know, the only thing that works is allergy medication. (or a box of tissues in every car, purse, and each room in the house!)

My son has seasonal allergies (mostly in the spring). This year his doctor has him on Allegra (OTC) and Bepreve eyedrops (prescription)...still early in the season to say if it works well long term but so far so good.
Last year he was on Zyrtec (OTC) and Zaditor eyedrops (OTC) and it helped moderately.
The most effective things I can do for him, though, are: keep the windows in house and car closed till mid-June, don't allow him outside before 10am or after dinner, and have him shower before bed. AND super windy days (like this past Sunday) are the worst!!! He played outside for about 4 hours that day and his eyes were nearly swollen shut on Monday morning even with the meds...beware of the wind :) Also, if you go to weather.com you can find pollen forecasts in your area. Good luck!
Best wishes!

We used to use Claritin or kids. My daughter is now on Flonase and Allegra. My son has Singulair and has had it since he was 6. These are for seasonal allergens like pollens, grasses, trees, etc.
My daughter with numerous food allergies has an epipen and uses Benadryl.

I know a family that found switching to a gluten free diet eliminated the need for prescription allergy meds.

My husband is an allergy sufferer, and besides OTC meds, we tried local raw honey. It really does need to be local... once we moved two states away the honey we had didn't really do much for his allergies, but still tastes amazing *laugh* They say about a tablespoon a day. It does take a while for it to take an effect, but there are a lot of good OTC childrens meds, you just have to read the labels closely to see what ages should use it. (Most I've seen are for 12 and up)

I'm definitely allergic to 5-year olds!

(Just kidding!)

Try the honey! You can also go to your local health food store and check out the allergy aisle. We have good luck with bromelain quercetin.
