Hi L.,
I'm in the midst of planning a 60th Anniversary party for my parents, so I feel your pain. Their anniversary was actually on Valentine's Day but my mom is an actress and travels a lot, so she wasn't home at the time to celebrate. So I decided to throw a surprise party for them in July. Fun fun!!
For their 50th we had a huge party also. My parents were married and never had a honeymoon or cake or anything. That was my mom's biggest thing, she wanted a cake. She and my dad went to the local soda saloon and shared a float after they got married. I can't remember any unique gifts they received or got for each other. All the kids pitched in and we got them airline vouchers so they could go to Hawaii. That has always been one of my mom's dreams. Well, 10 years later, they still have never gone. I know they've used the voucher but no idea what on. My dad didn't have much desire for Hawaii, he's more of a casino guy. Oh well!! :-)
Good luck and have fun! I am sure no matter what yall plan or do, it will still be special for your parents and for the family. It's a very special time regardless of any gifts and such. :-)
