Hi my 5 month old has a bit of eczema. I was hoping to let him dip into the pool for the 4th of july weekend. Anyone have a bad experience with this?
of course I will rinse him and lotion him up as much as possible.

What can I do next?

My twins have eczema as well. The girl is worse than her brother. We took them to the dermatoligist right around 6 months of age because it was on the scalp, face, back, everywhere and the twins were so miserable. He gave us a very mild steroid cream (Desonide I think it was) that cleared it up. Several months later, he had to change the cream because the frist no longer worked (Cutivate is the new one). However, when I asked him if we could take them in the pool and do normal activities, he said yes. al we had to do was be sure to reapply the perscription cream and diligently lotion them both up to prevent the dryness of the skin. We have done so ever since and it's worked like a charm! so let him have a ball in the pool this summer and many more to come!
Also, just to mention on the side, my oldest son has a milk and soy protien allergy. He bled rectally and would projectile vomit all the time. We had to put him on a special formula to help and it worked. If you wouldlike any help or suggestions with your son's milk/dairy allery you can always contact me.

Hi L.,

My son is 8 months old and he has eczema. I spoke to his dermatologist and she recommended using Baby Lizard Sunscreen. You can find it at CVS or Walgreens. She said the ingredients in the Baby Lizard sunscreen would be okay to use. Have fun!!

Hi L., I have a daycare child that had eczema really bad as a baby, his peditarcian said the pool was OK but no sun screen, so I would ask the pedeatrician about sun screen, this little guys doctor said that sun screen would make the ecema worse. J.

Check with his dr. If the pool is chlorinated, the harsh chemicals could really hurt his skin and aggrivate condition. Some pools now use a salt water system much better for your skin and hair.

AT 5 months my son had terrible excema- it started at about 2 1/2 months. It is gone now. I tried a million things- and I don't know if it was coincidence- but these three things happened the week the excema decided to start going away. 1. Took a dip in a salt water pool. 2. Changed all bath products to Mustela's line of Bath oil (a squirt in every tub), cleanser, and body lotion for dry and Excema prone skin 3. Made a cheesy/ make-shift cover for his car seat by cutting holes for the buckles in a cotton receiving blanket and tucking it under cover.

I don't know what did it. HOWEVER, I would definately use sunscreen on the baby!!!!! In trying to figure out what my son's rash was and how ro make it go away, we went to three doctors and a dermatologist. They all said to use sunscreen if the baby will be in the sun. The reason the back of the sunscreen says to check with a Dr. under 6 months is that they don't want you to leave your baby in the sun or give them much sun exposure at all because they can't regulate their body temp. very well at that age. They recommened Mustela's baby sunscreen or Aveno baby- both are a mineral sunscreen that will sit on top of the skin rather than just absorb it. Take the baby swimming is my advice- it'll be hot!

Ok, I was a registerd Medical Assistant for a Dermatologist for almost 10 years and I'll say that ALWAYS use sunscreen on your child. The last thing you want is a sunburned baby!!!!! Use non-scented, hypoallergenic sunscreens (there are a ton out there) Before your baby goes in the pool make sure they are moisturized and lathered up with lotions and or vasaline then put the sunscreen on. Make sure you rinse your baby off afterwards and lather with lotions again and or vasaline (non-scented, hypoallergenic etc..). Do NOT rub dry your baby, pat your baby dry and allow a little water to remain on the skin once you've rinsed then immediatly put the lotion on. Just keep up with sunscreen: 30 min before baby goes in the sun and every hour thereafter even if they aren't in the pool. You definilty don't want your baby in pain from a sunburn. Babies have such delicate skin and new skin that you dont' want to damage that for later on in life. And remember HAVE FUN!!!!!!
