I too have a 6 1/2 month old. In everything I have read they need to nurse/formula first then take solids. As they need the nutritional value of Bm and/or formula. Then whatever solids they eat is a bonus.
I have several questions about introducing solids. 3 weeks ago, I started feeding my 6 1/2 month old rice cereal at her 7 pm feeding. I am breastfeeding on one side and then trying the cereal and then breastfeeding on the other side. Somedays, it works really well, but other days she fusses and will not eat much cereal at all. I was going to start adding vegetables in this week. Do most people then switch the rice cereal to a morning feeding and feed the vegetable at another feeding time? Do most people do half of the milk feeding then food then the other half of the milk feeding? That is what I have read in most books. I don't really like the idea of feeding at a time other than her breastfeeding or bottle time because I want to establish a set meal time and not have her eating and then taking a bottle an hour or two later. How quickly do you move to three meals a day?

Hey, I have a 5 month old. I started rice cereal at 4 months. I would nurse him on one side in the mornings and then give him the cereal. At night, I feed him the cereal first and then nurse him. I started a night time routine that works great with him. I feed him cereal (he is on oatmeal now), give him a bath and put him in his pj's and then nurse him and put him to bed. It seems to work out really great.
I talked to my doctor about starting veggies. They told me to wait about a week (since we just switched to oatmeal) to see how that works out. Then introduce the veggies and feed them to him when I feed him cereal. As for the 3 meals a day, I have no idea. I am kind of winging this and asking my doctor a lot of questions.
The rice cereal made it hard for my little one to use the restroom. It stopped him up. That is why we switched to oatmeal. I hope this helps a little bit.
At 5.5 months, I started cereal (during dinner time) and my daughter didn't really like it, but I kept trying. I would always give her the cereal first and then nursed after (This is what her dr told me to do). After her cereal, I would give her a bath, then would nurse her and put her to bed. At 6 months, we started veggies and fruits. She would have her cereal in the morning and a fruit or veggie in the evening. Around 7 months, we fit in the 3rd meal. At 9 months, she started finger foods. She is now 11 months old and has a well established schedule. She knows exactly what time we do what.
I started with night feedings. Then within two weeks I upped it to morning/night. If your baby is interested and seems hungry, you can introduce lunch. I only nurse a few times a day now, so their primary diet is solids. I'd say I wasn't on to 3 meals a day until 8-9 months.
