My 28 week old son just started teething. His two bottom teeth are erupting, and he is in a great deal of pain. I've been giving him Tylenol and Oregel, but that only helps temporarily, and I have to wait too long to give it to him again. The poor thing is miserable, and neither of us is getting any sleep. Any advice would be greatly appreciated - especially since this just started and I know there's a long road ahead of us.
Well, I thought I would give you all an update. Infant Motrin was the best. I know it isn't quite as safe as the Tylenol, but it lasts longer, so he slept through the night. I had three solid days of the horrible crying/screaming/not eating, and then bam! All better. No need for Motrin anymore. One thing that did help to soothe him other than the Motrin was frozen Eggos. I thought that was pretty crazy, but it worked. I have heard though, and I'm not looking forward to it, that the molars are the worst. These were really bad... I'm thinking... how much worse can it get?!

Hylands teething tablets! They were the best thing ever for my little girl. You can find them usually near the vitamins at most any store. I love them because they don't have all the chemicals that orajel has and they work almost instantly. They don't taste bad either since they are made with milk sugar. Put a couple under the baby's tongue and they disolve almost instantly...much easier than using orajel to me. Anyway, we used these the enitre time my daughter was teething and they worked great. That and a little Tylenol for the extreme pain seemed to do the trick. The cold cloths and teethers are good too. One more thing we found worked great is a battery powered vibrating teether (found one at Wal-mart).
Hope this helps!

You could piggy back Infant Motrin and Tylonol, that way you could actually reduce his pain consistently. Usually it only lasts a couple of days ( at this intesity anyway).
Another less drug related idea is corn on the cob. You could try it frozen or really cold. My son loved that.
Hope you both are getting more sleep very soon.

My son is cutting his 2nd tooth now and we're having more trouble this time than the first. He's just really cranky so we tried the Tylenol too but he hated the teething rings. So a friend of mine told me to give him 1/2 of a frozen waffle and I decided to try that and he loved it! It sounds like I need to try those teething tablets though! Good luck. I hope something works for you and ya'll can resume sleeping!

Yes, the Motrin works MUCH better for us than Tylenol. I have used the teething tabs too. They do help a little. I hate to tell you this.. but the top two teeth were H-E double hockey sticks, for us! Unfortuantly there really isn't much more you can do. I had to do Motrin every 6 hours for a few days b/c it was so bad. GOOD LUCK! (this too shall pass!)

Have you tried a cold wet rag/ washcloth so he can chew on it? Or different water chew toys that you can either put in the microwave, or in the frezzer. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T BURN HIS LITTLE MOUTH IF YOU PUT IT IN THE MICROWAVE. Sorry I've knew a woman that burnt her baby's month. Good Luck!! T.

try giving him something cool to teeth on. if you don't have any teethers, you can take a washcloth, wet it, and put it in the freezer for a small amount of time. don't wet the whole thing so he can have something to hold onto without getting his hands cold and wet. something that also helped my little boy when he was teething were teething biscuits and homemade ice pops. i would put baby food or baby juice in the compartments of an ice cube tray and put a teething cookie in the middle then freeze them. he LOVED them! hope this helps.

I may have a old fashion way to help and maybe you may not agree with it. But here it goes. I would stick my finger in some whiskey and rub on my daughters gums. It helped with the pain and numbed the area too. And no you don't want to do it more that a couple of times a day!!

We had to use the whisky, like the other mother said. I even asked the pediatrician we went to at the time and he said it would not hurt him. That was the ONLY thing that worked for us. Some kids have a way harder time than others!

I used Hylinds Teething Tabs for my son when he was teething. You can get them at Wal-Mart. They are all herbal and disolve instatly. They are great for teething, colic, and wakefulness. And you can use them right along w/ tylenol & oragel. And since they are herbal, you can use them in between the times for tylenol. They have worked for me and many of my friends freom back home.

Motrin, Motrin, Motrin! It lasts much longer, and also, before bed, give your child a half of a teaspoon of Children's Benadryl. Our doctor recommended this, and my son slept right through the night.

Jess,
When my daughter was teething I found that letting her chew on celery that we kept in the refrigerater helped tremendously. I know it sounds odd but my doctor told me to try it. The coldness soothes the gums and the chewing helps push the teeth through. I also found a teething ring that you could put in the freezer. the ones that can only go in the fridge didn't seem to help her much.
Good luck

Hi, Your doing a good job by giving him tylenol and orijel but if thats just not cutting it you can also give him something cold to chew on in between. I used a cold washcloth but they also make toys specifically for that. You put them in the fridge to get cold. You can also wrap a icecube in a washcloth and secure it with a rubber band and let him chew it. I have heard of teething tablets from my friends, supposedly they work very well, but luckily its never been that big of an issue for us the above has worked just fine. Good luck.

MOTRIN. I'm the kind who never wanted to give my child medication...but he had a terrible time with teething and sleeping. He didn't sleep through the night until he was 13 months old. Anyway, I finally decided that having him hurt was worse than medicine, and Motrin helped him. It's 8 hour, so it works longer than Tylenol, which never seemed to do anything for him.
I understand not sleeping. Just know it does pass. I never thought it would - figured he'd be 15 and not sleeping through the night...but 16 teeth later, he does (21 months old).

Hi! I am a dental assistant-use motrin...Tylenol is no good for dental pain. Motrin is excellent for dental pain. There is also a topical gel called Hurricane that you can get at some drugstores that works great.

My suggestion is called Hurricane, it last a lot longer than Oregel! You get it at the pharmacy and it's normally under $10, worth every penny!!!! My first son had a rough time teething and this was our saving grace, along with Tylenol. We have already bought some for my six month old to be prepared for his teeth.
Good Luck!!

Yep -Hyland's homeopathic teething tablets. You can find them at WalMart. Dissolve 2 or 3 in the baby's mouth. They contain milk sugar and chamomile. I have four kids - they saved me many sleepless nights!

Try Motrin instead of Tylenol. It seemed to work better for my kids. Give it right before bedtime.
Buy some teething rings that you put in the fridge to keep cold. That have water inside of them. During the day,he can chew on those.

We feel your pain, as we have all been there before with an uphappy teething infant.
I have not used, but have heard great things about Hyland's Teething Tablets. They are all natural and have a calming and pain reduction effect on children. You can find them in most drug stores.
Here are some things that worked for my son:
-Place a wet washcloth in the freezer and then when crisp let your son chew on it
-Place strawberries in freezer and then when frozen place in a fruit mesh holder and let your son chew on it
-Purchase a hard/freezer safe teething ring, but not the bubble circle kind filled with solution/water as it can pop
-I switched from Infant Tylenol to Infant Motrin while my son was teething because it lasts longer
Hope this helps and good luck.

I feel your pain my son is almost 8 mo. The best thing I have found to use for teething is Teething Tablets. The are sold at drug stores. They are reasonably priced. You put them under the child's tounge and they dissolve. Numbing your child's mouth. They are all natural and you cannot overdose your child on them. They have worked wonders for me and several moms that I know. Good luck!

Try the teething tablets. They are awesome! They come in a small bottle. You just place 2 0r 3 under childs tongue, and let it dissolve. They are harmless. The relief lasts a while also. I lived by them when my son was teething. BUY THEM!

Hyland's brand has an herbal alternative that you can find at Walgreen's. It's done wonders for our son that's now 2 and we still use it on occasion. It was suggested by family and friends and works quite wonderfully for the (2) of you. Not only does it work to relieve some of the pain, but will help to calm your little one down too so that they can handle it better or maybe even sleep for a while.
You'll be amaized. (spelling?)
Hang in there. They teeth forever and a day it seems at times.

Try giving him Hyland's Homeopathic Teething Tablets. You can get them at either Wal-Mart or CVS Pharmacy. They work great for my son. I've been giving them to him since he started cutting his first teeth at 3 months old. You give them 2-3 (3works better for my son) up to 4 times a day. They are tiny little pills that desolve easily in their mouths.
Make sure you are cleaning his gums daily with a COLD clean wash cloth. The cold, and the pressure from cleaning feel really good on their sore gums.
Also try giving him one of his clean washcloths soaked in a glass of ice water to chew on. It will help give him some relief as well.
