6 1/2 Month Old Screaming for the Heck of It

My 6 month old just discovered he can scream at the top of his lungs. It's not a pain scream or a frustrated scream. Actually it's a very happy type scream. He does it all day long now and it litterally peirces my ear drum. I have been trying to ignore it hoping that by not making a big deal about it he will just stop doing it. I don't feel like he is doing it for attention because he does it when you play with him, when he's excited, while he's eating, taking a bath, etc.. it's an all day event and it is quite hard to deal with! I think he thinks he is talking. I know he is learning how to make new sounds and communicate, and I am hoping this is just a little phase and it will quit soon. Has anyone else experienced this with their child, is this normal, and when will it stop?? haha

What can I do next?

Yes-I have an 11 month old and we went through very much the same thing. Not much would help. I would try "shh" and putting my finger on his lips, but then he'd try to eat it.
:-) All I can say is yes, it is a phase and yes, it will pass. The even better new is now, my 11 month old seems to have discovered it again!!

my son was born 6//11/07 and yes he screams -just for the heck of it..

this too shall pass it is only a stage.

he will move on to some other developmental stage and the screaming will stop... I cant guarantee that the new stage will be better though..

I have not had this experience before but, maybe you can scream with him a couple of times so that he knows what it sounds like to scream. Try this at home though. Act like it is a game and see what he does. Then when it is your turn again, get a little closer, but not too close and scream in a high pitch, he'll eventually get the picture but this is just a phase he is going through. when the game stops, quiet him a little and maybe even hush him and scream a little softer. Maybe your son will scream softer, if he does while your playing the game, reward him with his favorite juice or cookie. Let me know how this works, it worked for me..Enjoy your day and give your son a big hug and kiss today.

Hi,
I was actually laughing as I was reading your problem, because my son, who is 5 1/2 months has been doing this too! It drives you absolutely crazy, but knowing that someone else is going through it, makes me feel so much better! Sorry, but I know what your going through, and I do not know how to stop it either!

Yes, my son went through this phase also! He especially loved to scream at daycare while the other babies were napping! I am sure the other moms loved that! Anyways, he doesn't do it as much anymore mainly because I think he is making other new sounds and beginning to babble/talk more. This will pass, though at times my son still does the screaming thing when he is excited!

Hi S..
He is just finding is "voice". He discovered that he can purposefully make noise!!! This is very cool. He dosen't realize that it is inappropriate to scream. He is just discovering himself. This too will pass. Good luck and congrats on your son. They sure are a gift!!

If it is not medically hurting him I would suggest closeing the door so you can't hear it and when he decides it isn't getting any attention he will stop on his own or get tired of doing it.

My son went through that phase at about the same time and it lasted for about 2 months, off and on. He mostly loved to do it while eating in public (wonderful for the other people). Our best strategy was to distract him with some other activity. My little guy loved it when I sang "Itsy Bitsy Spider" or some other song with hand motions that he would attempt to mimic (by slapping the table or his father would move his hands for him) which would work long enough for him to forget about screaming and engage in some other activity. Good Luck!

Haaa I so remember this time:) Yup...very normal. I think they are just finding their voice and learning tones and pitch. My twins would SCREAM back and forth for hours:) Even at 16 months they still do this every once in a while.
Hang in there...it will pass soon:)
