6 Month Old Cries ALL the Time

We have a 6 month old baby boy who cries almost all his waking hours. Only if we are up walking with him does he stop, and sometimes not then. Our daughter in law who has her Ph.d suggested that we try giving him Zantac. She said her son did the same thing and right after trying Zantac, he was a changed baby. This baby's parents are VERY YOUNG and we don't think that they will listen to advice - but we have come to the conclusion that they walk him all the time or stick a bottle in his mouth and prop it up. That disturbs us. SOMETHING is wrong with the baby. What can we do?

What can I do next?

Unfortunately, you can't give him any medication without his parents approval. You can suggest that he might have reflux is why he likes to be upright and it needs to be discussed with his doctor. If the parents are very young can you involve the grandparents to help?

otherwise, get that baby to a Pediatric GI- if it IS untreated reflux, that poor esophogus could be ulcerated...

I had this happen with my 2nd child. It was colic with him and colic can last for a while. I took my son to a chiropractor for 2 adjustments and he was a changed child. I recommend this or even doing baby massages on him when changing his diaper and playing with him. This may help stimulate his senses more and also allow him to relax easier.

Hope that helps. Have a GREAT weekend and a Happy New Year!

Is he eating and sleeping well? Or does he just cry all time during normal activities, like eating and playtime? May be colic so try feeding he upright and keeping him that way for 30 minutes afterward. Also try a swing it can sooth a colicy baby. Has he started baby food yet? If not he may need to start to supplement his feeding, even if you just start with cereal. Is he spitting up a lot at ever meal? It may be acid reflux and medication may help. I would just suggest this to the parent so they can bring it up at his 6 month doctor's check-up. Do you take him to appts? If so you can mention it to the doctor.

Report the parents to DHS, they will make them take parenting classes or place the baby in another home.

Hi W.,

It's hard to give advice to a young parent. I'm sure, from what you said, there are probably multiple things going on if he cries ALL the time. The only thing you can do as a child care provider is to make him as comfortable as you can when he is with you. Im talking specifically about detoxing your home or facility. Sometimes when you remove one bad stimulus the other problems settle down as well. If you've already done this, I applaud you! If you haven't I can give you some idea if you'd like.

God bless you for your efforts!
