My 6 month old son is still waking up once or twice during the night to eat. He usually drinks a good size bottle before bed but will still wake up. Do any of your babies do this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Last night he went to bed around 9 and he didn't wake up until 4:30 for a bottle, he didn't even drink the whole bottle before he rolled over and went back to sleep. Maybe we are on a good track! Thanks for all the advice!

My oldest is 5 now. She woke up EVERY night for 3 1/2 years. It is normal, in some. I was shocked when my son slept through the night at 6 months. Each child is very different as most moms will say.
I couldn't withhold food or change from her milk to water as had been suggested to me. I just went ahead and fed her or let her drink. I was working full time so it was hard, but I still cherish the times I would wake up with her and just have her.
My story.
Good luck.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but my son woke up 2x a night after going down at 10 and then still woke up by 6:30am until he was a year old. Every baby is different.

Hi R.
sounds like your little guy is just hungry- if you have not already started him on foods, cereal etc- I would certainly do that at least twice daily- then add the fruits and veggies- apparently his formula is not satisfying him .....he gets full but not satisfied.
Good luck and blessings

I nursed mine every two hours or so night and day for two years. Sleep deprived but wanted to meet their needs. It all works out. If your baby is hungry feed him.

Every child is different. My oldest starting sleeping through the night at two months. My youngest started sleeping through the night at ten months. Until then, she'd wake up and nurse at 2 a.m. on the dot, every night. Even after that, she'd still occasionally have a midnight feeding for a while. (She'd started eating solid food at three-and-one-half months.) So my only advice is to be patient, try some of the suggestions other have given you and make time to take a nap, even if it's only for 20 minutes.
By the by, now my oldest can sleep through a freight train going through her room while her sister wakes up at the sound of me tip-toeing down the hall.
Best of luck with your baby.

Hello R.,
I have a 6mth old daughter and she is doing the same. She always takes a 6oz before bed and wakes up about 1:30am for a 4oz and again at 4:30am for another, from what I've read it's perfectly normal. When she was about 4 mths she was sleeping thru the night .. maybe soon enough it will cut down to one feeding ;)

I can't remember what book it was (I think healthy sleep habits, happy child) - that said that some kids will need milk once at night until about 9 months. At nine months old, that is when I stopped nursing my daughter during the night. Good luck and enjoy your little one!

Hi R.,
I have a seventeen month old that is still on the bottle & still wakes up at night for a bottle. I realize your baby may be a but young to do this....but i fix 3 or 4 bottles & line them up in his baby bed. when he wakes up, he squirms around & finds the bottles,(juice, yogurt mixed with milk, water & whatever else he likes. He gets one & goes back to sleep. I have been doing this since I felt he was old enough to reach over & get hiself one. He has never slept all night long & even though I feed him a good supper he still wants a bottle during the night. Somestimes he may only drink one, sometimes all 3. He sleeps in the room with us, & i hear him wake up, i just lie there & wait to see if he is going to get a bottle, or if he needs me to help him. or maybe even a diaper change. Usually he is fine getting it himself.& goes back to sleep. So in my opinion its normal that your baby wakes up to be fed. There are moms that have babies that sleep all night long, but I am not one of them :O)

His body may be telling him that he is ready for cereal. Try putting a small amount with the last bottle of milk, you will have to make the hole bigger in that bottle to allow the cereal to pass through it worked for my son at the same age.

My son is just starting to not wake up at night and he is 10 months old. I decided this past Friday I would start the sleep training and not give him a bottle before 5:00. So far he has slept through the night or close to 5:00. Your baby is still young and every child is different. I felt like the only parent still giving my child a night feeding but did what I felt best. I would discuss my sons sleeping patterns with his doctor at every visit and she didn't seemed concerned or worried. She would encourage but not push.

R. have you tried putting cereal in your sons bottle when putting him to bed? Doing that usually helps babies sleep all night. They stay full longer.

Hi R.-

I have a 15 month old who has only been sleeping consistently through the night for a few months now. He would still wake up once a night up until he was about a year old. Try feeding him some cereal shortly before bed to help keep him full longer, but if he continues to wake once or twice a night it's not unusual.

By the way, my first child started sleeping through the night when he was about 6 months old, my second not until close to a year and now my third started at about a year, too. Even though I think I did everything the same with all 3, I just think all babies are different and do things in their own time.

Good luck,
K.
