My poor 6 week old has a flemmy cough. I've been using nose saline alongwith suction to keep his nose clear, but the cough is horrible. I used a humidifier last night but haven't seen any results. He chokes on the flem and sometimes throws/spits up. I feel awful...any recommendations to help my little guy out?

He's very young and a newborn and their immune system is NOT fully developed yet.

TAKE him to the Doctor, right away.
You do not want him to aspirate on the mucous or choke. An infant cannot control that.

Be careful of using the bulb suction too much, because it can abrade the inner nostrils.

DO NOT guess and use whatever, because he is a newborn.

All the best,
Susan

All of what you are doing is good , you are clearing his nose which is what he needs , he is to young at the moment for anything like vapor rubs. To help with the cough/choking issue , have him sleep in his swing chair/bouncy chair or even car seat until the cough has gone , being led flat makes the cough worse & at least then he won't choke on the phlem.

I hope he is better soon

Try giving him a warm bath so the heat vapors help to sooth his lungs, and than put some Vicks with the Lavender smell on his chest. It might help to break up the plem.
I would also try sitting in the bathroom with the hot water running like you would for croup. The steam really does help to clear up the chest. It also can help you loose weight ha ha....just be prepaired to sweat a lot and make sure to bring in something really warm to wrap baby in once you come out.

Good luck, there is a bad cold going around, there isn't much you can do until it goes away.

My daughter is a little over 2yrs old and I have been dealing with the same issue for the past six months now. I’ve taken her to her doctor numerous times and of course they say lots of fluid, yogurt/dairy, saline, suction and a humidifier are the things I should do to help her. But none of those helped as far as a long term treatment, it just kept reoccurring. Last Friday I got a call from her daycare provider telling me she woke up from her nap and threw up and the following day the same thing occurred. So, today I took her back to her physician and explained to him that this is becoming a bit ridiculous and there must be something that he could do. He told me that she has a sins infection and penicillin was prescribed for her, so I’m hopping this will do the trick. He mentioned that the build up mucus and greenish/yellowish color that drips from the nose, throwing up, and coughing is a sins infection and that it was reoccurring because it turned into bacteria since she didn’t full recovery the first time from it. I understand your frustration and stress dealing with your 6 week old baby. And if your family members are anything like mine constantly nagging me to take her to see her doctor and telling me this is not normal and the doctor only sends you home with the recommendations above can drive anyone crazy. Unfortunately, I don’t believe a doctor would prescribe any sort of medication for an infant as young as yours. But it might be that your 6 week baby also has a sins infection, just a thought. Maybe you should check with your child’s physicians to see if it could be a sins infection first. Good luck and hope he feels better.

Same thing happened to my 3 month old. He was actually admitted to the hospital on Christmas Day with RSV and Influenza B. Do yourself a favor and get the baby to a dr to get that cough checked. My son was on steriods, breathing treatments and Oxygen for 3 days in the hospital/

Hi S.,

Flem is the body's natural reaction to protect the nose and nasal passages, etc. from irritants like bacteria, fungi, and synthetic chemicals. If nobody else in the home is sick or if his is just lingering on, then you probably have some chemical issues in your home. Most of us do but they affect different people different ways and a 6 week old is going to be hypersensitive to it.

I detoxed our home and removed all the synthetic chemicals and all our allergies and colds are gone. These chemicals, laundry detergent (even Dreft), baby products (Johnson and Johnson are the worst in my opinion), even the soap you use on yourself that he snuggles up to can be dangerous. These chemicals contraindicate just like meds do and we don't know what combination we are exposing ourselves to. The breastcancerfund.org did research and in their summary of the paper State of the Evidence documented that an average of 44 toxic chemicals pass through the umbilical cord in utero. I have read other documents that have stated higher but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

Detoxing can be simple and inexpensive and will help everyone's health in the home. Removing carcinogens is always a good idea :)
This may not be the only irritant for your little guy but removing these types of irritants will strengthen his immune system so he'll have a fighting change against the other things and can fight off what ever this is.

If you'd like help or would like me to walk you through the process, let me know. Hope I helped!

Regards,

M.

The extra phlegm could be related to something more serious - my son was super phlegnmy, throwing up after eating, and then he was wheezing. Turns out he had bronchiolitis and had to do breathing treatments. Double check with your dr, please!
