6 Year Old Daughter with Chronic Ear Eczema

Hi- My nearly 6 year old daughter has had chronic eczema behind her ear since she was 3 years old. We have tried many approaches to heal it: homeopathy (myself through books) - healed it for 6 months or so, gluten-free diet - only managed 3 weeks on it to no effect, steroid cream from my dh's dermatologist (reluctantly out of desperation) - caused it to spread to the other ear & scalp. I tend not to believe that a dermatologist can heal with steroids - they just supress symptoms. Steroids have never helped anyone in my family, in fact, made things worse. Now we just maintain the terrible oozing & flaking with a natural ointment (Burt's Bees Res-Q), but it never goes away completely, just helps soothe & prevent the extreme bleeding/oozing. She also takes probiotics, cod liver oil, sometimes evening primrose oil. We have just begun to eliminate cow dairy products as a last resort, replacing with goat dairy. Many have told me it could be cow dairy. I really had put off trying this because dd loves dairy items, but luckily, also goat (so expensive though!) Elimination diets are SO difficult because my dd is VERY particular about food and there is so little she will eat. I was thinking also to try a clay bath detox I have seen. Anyone been through this? Dd would love to have her ears pierced, but it's impossible the way her ear is now. Can anyone recommend an alternative health practitioner with proven success with eczema in children? We're leaning towards NAET, as recommended by my dd's doctor, but we don't know who to see - we're on a limited budget right now so a referral to someone who can definitely help would be appreciated. (to avoid trial and error) Thanks so much! A. PS - We also use unscented, pure soaps/shampoos, including laundry soap, dd showers 3x per week to minimize soap irritation.

My nephew had really bad eczema. My sister couldn't get it under control with anything. I started selling Arbonne skin care products about 4 months ago and the baby care line is great for his eczema, he also uses the skin conditioning oil and rejuvanating cream and he hasn't had any problems with it since. I can send you some free samples if you would like to try it out and see if it works.

Has anyone raised the possibility that this could be a fungal infection rather than eczema? Fungal infections can look remarkably similar, and can be reluctant to clear up on their own. And steroids would not help a fungal infection at all. Since you've tried so many things, what's another topical cream, right? When I was a kid, I had a spot on my face that continually cracked and oozed, sometimes would heal, sometimes would come back, for years. My mom (who is a nurse) finally cured it with an over the counter anti-fungal cream.

Hello A.,

Are you familiar with Arbonne's products? They are botanically based, dermatologist & pediatrician tested. We have a baby line that works very well for eczema and is very gentle on the skin. I am an independent consultant and I can send a free sample pack for you to try. No obligation to buy but I would love to be able to help your daughter feel better (and get her to a place so she can get her ears pierced!!). Drop me a line if interested. You can also look at all of our products at arbonne.com.

Hi A.,
My brother had severe eczema for years as a kid (he's 34 this year and eczema free). It was caused by a milk allergy. My parents tried every version of milk available including goat milk. The one milk he could drink was non-fat powdered milk. I want to say they used "Keri lotion" or "Keri oil." It was really oily and clear. My own kids (one with milk issues) have not had eczema though.
Good luck!

I have had great personal experience clearing up eczema with blue chamomile essential oil. It is a little pricy, but you only need a drop a day rubbed on the eczema. I would recommend that you buy a quality rand like Simplers or Young Livingl It is great for all kind of skin things.

I personally have had great success with flaxseed oil. You can mix it into food, you just can't heat it. Take it everyday. Also, licorce root is a great alternative to steriod creams. It is considered a natural steriod. I received all of this info from the herbalist at my local herb store. I never found any permanent success with the steriods from the determatologist.

My daughter's eczema is kept in check only by eliminating soy from her diet. We took her to an allergist, and she has no known allergies, but boy, does that soy trigger the eczema. It's really hard to eliminate because it's in pretty much every processed food, even bread.

good luck.

I am an adult who had severe eczema as a child which included the eczema behind the ears. As an adult my eczema is pretty minimal. When I was a child, I saw dermatologists & used Cetaphil, phisoderm, neutragena soap (before anyone knew what neutragena was) & Alpha Keri bath oil (left a ring in the tub). These help with symptoms, but didn't really eliminate the eczema. What I learned when I became an adult was to never use deodorant soaps, stay away from wearing strong perfumes, not to use lotion except shea butter.
Regular Lotions are toxic to my skin. They cause sores even from a single use. I do not drink milk as I do also have a milk protein allergy. I use baby bath to bathe with. It is cheaper than hypoallergenic items and works just fine. It is the mildness that is important. Be careful that the detergent that you are washing clothes with is not especially perfumed. All free & clear is inexpensive & works well. These are simple things that I figured out on my own & work great. Also, I don't use strong air fresheners or carpet fresh type products in the home. None of my kids have had eczema. I think getting rid of the typical perfumed products might help. I was adopted so my adoptive mom didn't realize these items might be affecting me. Many people just think of smoke, pets and dust when it comes to people with allergies, eczema & asthma, but it can be more specific than that. Also, I agree that mainstream medicine often treats symptoms rather than the cause.

Good luck! R.

Hi A.,

My son has mild eczema (no oozing, just flaky and itches) on his legs and torso. I have managed to keep it at bay by using Aveeno's Baby Soothing Relief Moister Cream. Like you, I have tried so many things and this is the only cream that I found that works for him. Also, his soap, shampoo, and laundry detergent are all fragrance and dye free.

You can also try Omega3. One of the many wonderful things Omega3 is good for is reducing inflammation.

Anyway, I hope this helps and good luck.

I would suggest that you ask your pediatrician for a referral to a dermatologist -- they specialize in anything having to do with the skin, and if you aren't comfortable using medication on the rash (everyone, literally everyone, in my family has suffered from eczema and sometimes its takes trying a few different, prescribed ointments to find the one that works best for your particular type of eczema) he/she can still suggest the BEST homeopathic way to keep it under control. I would give you the name of the dermatologist I have seen almost my entire life, but she works out of Palo Alto here.
Taking advice from anyone BUT a dermatologist on your child's eczema is a risky thing - everyone has their own opinions on what works and what doesn't, but a dermatologist is trained and experienced on all varieties of this particular rash and is knowledgeable about nearly all the different treatments that can be used, and tailor it to your and your daughter's specific eczema needs. Skin is their specialty, and you won't find any other doctor, alternative or no, that knows more about skin - most dermatologists, unlike many pediatricians, are much happier to venture into the natural, homeopathic realm when treating skin issues because, well, sometimes nothing BUT natural treatment works for some people and their skin issues.
Call your insurance company or pediatrician and ask for a few different numbers of dermatologists in your area - call them, and see which one of them seems more your "style".

Oh, do I know eczema! My sweet 6 year old son has had it all over his body since he was just a newborn. We went through all the methods natural, and otherwise. We did try the NAET technique and had no result. It is very frustrating to spend so much money with no result! So I understand where you are coming from. I think trying the diary elimination is a good idea. We did a lot of eliminations as well.
The only thing that has helped my little guy, besides steroids is a high antioxidant juice known as Monavie. He took it for a little over a week and I was already noticing that I did not have to put steroid on him. He has now been off the steriods for about 2 months. He is not 100% better, but I would say 90%. He still flares up at times when we have not been consistent giving it to him.
Another great thing about Monavie is that it covers their recommended daily allowance of fruit/veggies. It also covers their RDA of antioxidants which can help deter many known diseases. It is also organic.
Hope this helps. Please feel free to email me with any further questions.

I have a light case eczema, and the soap I use makes all the difference. I can only use Caress (the good old pink stuff) nothing else or my eczema comes right back, even with gentle or pure soaps. Also I think kids tend to not rinse well enough behind their ears - even when they think they have.
So my suggestion: try a different soap and make sure behind the ears is rinsed with no residue. Good luck!!

Disease cannot live in an alkaline ph body. First I would like to offer that I will share the 8.5 alkaline water to drink and the 2.5ph acidic water to treat your daughters eczema. I live in Windsor and I will be having a Water Awareness Gathering on Tues March 11. at 10:30 AM and you can get some water then if you would like...or sooner!

Here is my website so you can research this wonderful water. www.thewatertruth.com/connieleigh

In Japan, where they have used this water in hospitals for over 30 years they treat the body externally with the 2.5-5.5 ph acidic waters and the internal illnesses with the highly alkaline waters. I purchased the machine to help me with my Rheumatoid arthritis and it is 90%gone!!!

Dear A.,

I just happened to be looking for something concerning my grandson that I raise and I read about your little girls eczema behind her ear. It has to be so hard to have right behind the ear. Well, I started a business out of my home that helps families in the wireless age. I have seen from beginning to end.It took 6 months, but what is 6 months to clear her whole body. She even took pictures. It is a water system that structures water. It has two technoligies. For myself, my skin is so much nicer. The water does not go to your stomach
it goes directly to the cells. This water is compared to the Lords in France. The research is on my site. I will give that to you. I usually walk people through the site. It is much easier that way. My phone # is on the site, if you want to call me. mybiopro.com/dkh The reason I found this co.
because my we thought my grandson had ADD. The school wanted us to medicate him. With may tests, we found out that he does not have ADD. He was effected by EMF, electrical magnetic frequency. This was totally new to me. I never heard of it before. He now wears a pendant and we equipped our home with little chips on the game station, TV, computer ect. I donated one that plugs in to the wall to the school. IT covers 3000 square feet. His teacher says he no longer clicks he pencil on the desk or opens and closes his pencil box. He is also is sleeping much better. Anyway this company has the water. I have seen it help many people that have eczema, dehydration and going through Radiation. It is good for everyone.
Usually children do not need structured water. There body should do it on there own until about 18 years unless there body is compromised for some reason. One of the ladies that had eczema all her life until she found the water, is going through the channels through Eczema foundation. I not sure the name of the exact name. She does not want anyone to suffer and spend thousands of dollars on Dr. and creams as she
did.
I know that this will help you out. Call me anytime

Have you tried Aquaphor? It doesn't seem like it should work because I think the majority of it is petroleum jelly, but for my family it seems like the 'miracle cure' - eczema (where moisture - not wetness - is really important), strange rashes, bumps, etc. My whole family has eczema and when breakouts occur (which is stress related), we use Aquaphor and Eucerin ORIGINAL lotion (not any other brand) and it clears up. [The Eucerin ORIGINAL has to be used because of the Mineral Oil - other brands don't use mineral oil; in fact, other Eucerin combinations don't work either!] This is what has helped us.

My 7 yr old daughter has had the same problem for almost 3 years. She also has dry, cracked skin in the creases of her ears. My favorite remedy is Vaseline. Her pediatrician and dermatologist said that there's really no cure for her eczema, just treatment. Some other lotions or cream gave her a burning sensation so I went back to the trusty Vaseline. (We did use steroids, too, but only for severe breakouts and for a limited time.)

My daughter's half-sister had the same awful problems when she was younger but now (at 15) just uses a daily moisturizer. I'm hopeful that my daughter will grow out of her eczema, as well. Oh! she was finally able to get her ears pierced this past December. We still need Vaseline occassionally but as long as we treat it as soon as it flares up, she's is comfortable.

Good luck!

Sorry to hear your daughter has eczema it is a hard thing to live with at times. I know I have had it since I was young. For me the only thing that works is a ointment called Betamethasone Dipropionate 0.05%. Now this ointment is a homonal cream and the strongest on the market. I know there are some that are very low or no hormon in them. As your child is young I would try some of the other ones instead. But only use the ointment ones the creams do not work. The creams fade fast and the ointments penatrate the skin better.
Also for me the weather changes are a trigger like right now I am flared up. Also peanut's or peanut butter, and stress is also a great trigger. The soaps you use are also somehting you need to watch. I use Dove it works for me. Some of the other soaps dry the skin out. Also lotions with any perfumes can make it hurt and burn. I use Hempz lotion. You can get it at planet beauty in the mall in Roseville.I know it is hard for you daughter to have. It was for me. I know it is hard and fustrating to deal with. I hope she will grow out of it that is a possablity. The dermatologist I went to was Roseville Dermatology on Pleasent Grove Blvd ###-###-####. They were good. I used to have that when I was a little girl, I had exzema on my forearms and behind my nees and my ears and when i was about 11 it moved to my hands but stopped being behind my ears and arms and nees, I still have it to this day, what i recommend is to cleanse the area with hypo allergenic soap, before you treat the area. also moisturize the area constantly because it is when it dries out it gets worse. Ask your doctor about desoximetisone 0.25% creme, it is a cream you use twice a day for two weeks, the exzema will never go away mind you but in between outbreaks use hydrocortizone 1% creme or ointment whenever you see dryness or irritation. you can get this at longs. desoximetasone does not have steroids infact desox. is an emollient creme base consisting of white petrolatum, purified water, isopropyl myristate, lanolin alcohols, mineral oil, and cetostearyl alcohol. Also just apply a thin layer rub gently. Keeping hydrated helps out too, so give your daughter lots of water and use aveeno products they have great lotions for exzema and soaps. Best of luck.. C. My niece has patches of eczema and at times they seems to be worse than others. She's 27 now and they seems to have subsided except for a few small patches. When she was growing up, we used T-Gel shampoo (Nutrogena brand, light blue box, dark carmel colored product, doesn't smell all that great but boy does it work!) which helped significantly. It wouldn't hurt to try this with your daughter. When shampooing her hair, leave it on a few minutes longer, then rinse and condition as normal.

My son has eczema. We also find that things work for a while and then they don't. His flare ups come from sevrere weather changes and food allergens.

I have two suggestions. First get your child tested for allergies. You can get a blood test if you don't want to have your daughter pricked. If my son has any form of corn (including corn starch, HFCS, or citric acid derived from corn)his skin shows it.

My second suggestion is EMU oil. wonderoil.com sells a dry lotion bar that works well and is easy to apply. The straight oil didn't work as well for us but some say it works for them.

Hi!

My son had chronic eczema as a toddler and I tried all the things you are trying and what worked for him in the end was not the steriod cream, but we eliminated dairy + added Juice Plus to his diet. It's fruit and veggie whole food supplement. I had such great results with my son that is one of the many reasons I share it with other mom's now. What I learned about eczema is that it has to do with an the immune system and one of the published studies done on JP+ shows it helps balance out the immune system. You can check it ____@____.com will be six next month and has been eczema free for almost 3 years now :) Another great thing I learned to use for eczema is olive oil. Look for a good Homeopathy - one with CCH as the designation, with experience with children. Homeopathy can treat rashes, cradle cap, eczema and other skin conditions.

Suppressing skin conditions in infants and children (creams, cortisone, etc.) will always drive the issue to deeper layers...resulting in later allergies, asthma, etc.

Homeopathy is a 200 year old medical science that will gently, effectively and quickly handle these types of things. It's gentle for babies and children!

Be sure to find a Homeopath who specializes in advanced dosing methods using water, not dry pellets.

Wow, you have tried a lot of things and it's great you have done your research and have tried things on your own. My daught, 15, has recently started getting ezcema; she is a swimmer and was extrememly embarrassed because everyone could see it!!! The doctor gave us steriods that were useless. However, we have had alot of luck using Arbonne's Baby Care products; the irritation has gone WAY down, in fact, it's barely there and she no longer is constantly itching and touching it. Oh, yeah, we also used their skin conditioning oil on it to take away the flakey skin that came after it started going away; it helps with scars, too.

You said your resources were limited; they have a 45 day money back guarantee with their products. So, if you used it and didn't like it, no problem. Money back, no questions.

Have your daughter tested for allergies. I have moderate to severe eczema, and it has been linked by an allergist to a sensitivity to dust mites. I can usually control it with a combo of being really attentive to washing everything on my bed and taking something like Zyrtec or Claritin if I get a flare up.

I am a alternative healing practitioner of many modalities. I have already had a lot of success with psoriasis. I have seen a kidney stone melt away that was the size of a golf ball. I know that absolutely anything is possible.

I myself had candida overgrowth, and I know that even though you didn't see immediate results with your dietary changes that you are on the right track. Staying away from milk will help. But it took me learning energy healing for me to be completely free from allergies.

What I do is completely safe and I can do it long distance (love knows no boundaries).

I used pure baby eczema care cream for my daughter. She also has eczema, you have to order it online so stock up. I noticed when we stop using it her skin flares up again. The steriod creams will work to target certain areas, but the pure baby cream is easy to apply all over the body if needed. Oh it's all natural. www.purebaby.com

Good Luck!

Have you ever tried Emu Oil? check out the website www.dremu.com and read about it. but look at other sites/businesses if you decide to buy it. that is because it is cheaper i noticed. i use it under my eyes to heal when i get a reaction to a new makeup/eye shadow, etc and it flares up. it heals faster. I have a sensitivity to products. Anyway, it boasts to help with a wide spectrum of skin problems (chronic and acute reactions). Good Luck.

My husband suffered with this for years. Finally he tried a lotion called Elocon and it's GONE!!! Hurray! The doctor was reluctant to prescribe it saying it would not work, but it did, and in just a few days it was gone. Now he used it only when he starts to feel it coming on and it goes away overnight. What a blessing! Good luck!!!

Hi A.,

I can't say that I can relate to your issue, but I have been working in dermatology for over 2 years now. From what Ive seen, in children and adults, it sounds as though your daughter may just be predisposed to having a sensitivity to her skin. Whether that may be eczema or some other form of chronic condition, she will probably always have to be careful what she comes into contact with. Steroids do help in general, but if you have to a very thorough and experienced dermatologist and haven't had any luck, you may want to go see more of a specialist at UCSF or Stanford. Not sure where you reside, but once you tap out the ideas of your general derm M.D. they should be refering you onto someone more specialized then they are. Has she seen an allergist before you take her off all dairy products? May want to consider that first. Good luck to you. Hope she improves soon. Sometimes with a condition of eczema or psoriasis, it comes down to maintenance therapy once the fire is put out/controlled. It could be a life-long problem that you/she will just need to keep under control with the correct therapy/treatment.

Hi A.,
My girls did not have the eczema behind the ear, but did have it under their eyes and inside elbows. I tried some of what you did as well, but really had no luck. Our seccess came in the form of a hand cream, that is nothing out of the ordinary, but is not easily found in the US, I'm afraid. It is from Mexico. I have found it at Longs Drugs (certain ones not all) and some small stores that cater to the Spanish speaking population. It is called Atrix. The lid says -----atrix Clásica Protege y suaviza crema para manos con glicerina------- translation>>>>-----atrix clasic protects and softens hand cream with glycerin------ I showed it to our pediatrician and he was surprised it was nothing out of the ordinary. It comes in a container like the flat round one Nivea cream can be purchased in, and is bright yellow with a green lid. The lettering on the yellow part is green and on the lid it is white and yellow. I've also stuck to Dove body soap (original), because other soaps seemed to make it worse. My other daughter responded much more favorably to Aveeno lotion, but it has to be the one with Menthol, because the other varieties didn't help. I have made no other changes to what we do, eat or use. My daughters are now 9 and 11 and have not had a problem with the eczema. Now and then a little itch starts to bother them at the particular sites, but as soon as we use the lotion or cream it clears up. The 11 year old started to show signs of the ezcema before she was even a year old. It was terrible. My mom used the hand cream all the time and out of desperation, my husband used it on our daughter only to find it worked!! I hope this helps you. Let me know. Good luck!

We use vaseline on my sons eczema and it works great. We slather his up a couple of times a day and right after the bath whenever he has a flare up.

Are you sure it is eczema? My son had eczema when he was a baby and the thing that got rid of it almost completely was Rx Desonide cream, cetaphil lotion followed by aquaphor or vaseline to seal it in. The lotion and vaseline needs to be done 4 times a day or more. A quick daily shower with cetaphil cleanser immediately followed by the above regimen. Then I gave benadryl everynight. Within a few weeks of this it mostly went away. Now I just do the bath and moisturizer (although I am suppose to do it more frequently). The other thing that I have started doing is eliminating eggs, cow milk, peanuts and other nuts and shellfish from my son's and my diet (since I am breastfeeding) which has helped immensely. It takes more than a few weeks. At least a couple of months. They say they may out grow it.

My 13 month old is plauged with eczema on both arms and knees and her face. The only thing I've tried that has worked is Emu Oil. It helps reduce the inflamation and is a great moisturizer. It can be expensive, but a little dab will do you. The cheapest I found was in the vitamin store for $11 an oz. on sale.

My ear lobes were not only white and scaly, they would weep a clear liquid and sometimes crack and bleed. An acupuncturist noticed them and told me she had another patient who used to look like that. I asked how she got rid of it.

She said she went off wheat. I loved wheat and could hardly imagine. However I had a blood test for allergies and I was allergic to all glutens and dairy. I went off all of it (weeks is not long enough. It takes months) . I stayed off for years and then found I could eat small amounts without any trouble. Now I no longer test allergic.

Nowdays there are many wheat-free, gluten-free and dairy free products available to make this easier. When I did it, it was quite a challenge because our diet is so based on wheat and dairy.

You are right about the creams just suppressing it. The skin is the biggest respiratory organ of the body. It is trying to breathe out something the body does not want. LISTEN.
Good Luck.

A good dandruff shampoo containing coal tar may work for her, it did for my son, who had a terrible flaking, scaling condition on his scalp. I would put him in the bath, wet his hair, apply the shampoo, and leave it on while he played. I hope this helps.
