My 6 year old daughter who has been a very picky eater all her life has been really constipated lately. She doesn't like to talk about it at all. She finds it embarrassing to talk about "bathroom words" with me. Anyway, when she has to go poop, she's on the toilet so long that her legs get pins and needles 1/2 the time. Also, a couple of times over the past few weeks, she's come out of the bathroom crying. When I was finally able to get her to tell me what's wrong she told me that her bum was bleeding because the poop was so big? Any advice on the subject. If it involves eating/drinking fruit or juice, she won't do it.

What can I do next?

My son has been struggling with constipation since age 2 and he is now 5 1/2. He has been on prescribed medication for a few years and it works great. Now there is an over the counter medication called miralax and you pit in a drink and it dissolves and has no color, flavor or odor. This will cause the poop to loosen up so that it will not hurt her and it will be hard for her to hold the poops in. Definitely talk to your pediatrician or ask you local pharmasist. It is hard to have a child who struggles with constipation, believe me, but this medicine works wonders for my son. Good luck!!

You should give her some fiber. There are fiber supliments that can disslove into anything she will eat. I use one called Benefiber. It looks like sugar and you can mix it into anything. it has no taste so she won't even know you have put it in. Please try this out. I would hate to have your six year old have any more "potty" problems.

I would consult with your doctor on what would be best for her. I have heard good things about Miralax like others have said. I know you said she is a picky eater, but keep and eye out that she is getting enough fluids... Best of Luck

My 7 year old went through the same last summer. The doctor recommended we add miralax to his diet (in drinks), as he is basically constipated. It does not have to do with diet so much (he eats fruits and vegetables through the day. In my son's case it has to do with laziness. he gets distracted with other activities and neglects to pay attention to his body. So a few days would go by without him pooping. He was staining his underware, so I thought he was indeed going often. I even thought he could be intolerant to something in his diet. The miralax has been great, he still takes it every other day, just to make sure he stays regularly.

Try mixing in Miralax(sold at grocery stores, target,cvs....etc) in something she will drink with out her knowing for a few days to soften her poop and make it more comfortable. My 8 year old was a with holder. She would refuse to poop because it hurt. Which was caused by her not going daily. Now my 3 year old informed me she doesn't ever want to go poop!! It's more common than you'd think. Try to stay away ex-lax it causes cramping. And try a stool under her feet while she is trying to go it will help with the pins and needles. And offer books to look at. Good luck!

My daughter is 5 and had the same problem when she was younger, she would wait so long before she would go that it was very difficult for her to go and the same thing she would be on the toilet for a long time and her bum would bleed. My pedi told me to try MiraLAX. It is an over the counter e, I used half a regular dose every day for about a week before it kicked it. It is a tasteless powder so you can mix it in her water, cramp free, she never knew she had it and it made a big difference. Once she started going more often and smaller it was so much better for all of us! Every once in a while I still use it when I know she is hasn't gone in a while and it really helps.
