6 Year Old with Body Odor - Pittsburgh,PA

My son, who is 6 and a half, sometimes has body odor. He bathes daily and wears clean clothes every day. I bought him all natural deodorant, which seems to work but I am wondering why a clean child of this age is experiencing this. Does anyone have a similar situation? I think there is a difference on the days where he has non organic milk vs. the days he has organic milk. Am I nuts? I thought body odor and deodorant were issues for puberty!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, now I know I'm not nuts! I am going to switch to ALL organic milk and meat and mention it at his nest well child appointment. Thanks moms!

Some kids need a deodorant younger than others. My eleven year old daughter has been using it for several years. She has not started puberty yet.

My seven year old stinks too!! LOL I am pretty sure it is just one of those things that has nothing to do with nutrition but bacteria growth. My guy started to wear deodorant for fashion (he's a SLAVE to fashion) and to be like dad. My guy likes to wear AXE body spray. I allow it because he is generally a good kid and I don't really mind the smell of it. But getting back to the point, my Dr. said that it is not pre puberty or anything else but bacteria growth just like in an adult. It sounds like you are taking the proper steps to teach him how to take care of himself. I would be concerned if the smell was so bad you didn't have to really sniff his armpits to smell it.

Maybe this is natures way of easing us into how gross teen age boys are. Make them start to smell when they are still cute and wonderful because adding smelly to the list of things are are "special" about teen boys would really put it over the top.

Any chance he is on an antibiotic? My son had terrible body odor when he was taking medicine, then it went away as soon as he finished the dose.

Nope, you're not nuts. Some people just naturally develop an "odor" about them because of their diet. I'm not sure it's from the milk, but you may want to see if he's been eating alot of garlic or onion as that will definitely do it.

You pretty much answered your own question. My kids went through the exact same issue. Our oldest son is almost 13 and is only now beginning to need deoderant daily and he's been in puberty since right before he turned 12. You are definitely NOT nuts!! He was 9 when we first noticed the body odor and once mentioned to the pediatrician she suggested switching to organic. Once we did that his body odor completely disappeared. If you switch for good you'll most likely be able to discontinue the deoderant altogether until a more appropriate age.

When my two 1/2 year old sweats, her head/hair smells like a foot! And we wash her hair every night. So I think if there's perspiration, there can be odor.

Of course my husband thinks I'm crazy... :)

Hi N., No, you are not nuts, everything we eat and drink effects how we smell. Some people are just more sensitive than others, just like some folks sweat more than others. FYI as the mother of three teen girls I can tell you that puberty starts much earlier than you may realize...with girls they start with pms like symptoms of mood swings, tears etc around 8 or 9 years old...even if their peroids don't start until they are 12 or 13. Tell your Dr. that he is using deoderant at his next check-up just so that he knows. Hang in there! Best wishes

You are definitely not nuts. You are correct, but then there's your problem. Regular milk, as opposed to organic milk, contains rGBH, which is bovine growth hormone, which is injected into cows to keep them producing milk en masse for bigger faster profits. The result of this, it has been documented, is onset of early puberty in human children even as young as your son's age, with girl's that end up menstruating at age 7 in some cases, poor things.
So that could be your problem, give him organic milk and foods and a bar of deodorant - if anything, it can't hurt, right? ;)

If it is the milk you are giving him? Rutters,as well as other brands advertise that they are growth hormone free on the bottle or the lid. However, my 7 year old (just turned)is very very active, he plays a lot of sports and I constantly am telling him he smells like a little barnyard animal!LOL! Just being outside playing, or bike riding, he smells bad and is sweating like crazy. I don't think this is all that unusual, unless maybe the child is smelling badly and is doing absolutely no activity at all? Definitely mention this to your Dr at the next visit.
