my daughter is teething and has been getting diaper rashes very frequently. we were using beaudreauxs butt paste whenever she'd get one and that would clear it up in a day or two. then they started to happen more frequently so i asked her pedi about it and she said it was fungal and normal and gave us a rx for oxistat cream. so i used it as directed and it went away. well like 2 days ago it came back and today any time she has a poo diaper she freaks out. shes screaming and squirming and it's terrible. shes having complete meltdowns. i was just wondering what i should do. im going to call her dr in the morining but she should have another bm before the morning and its breaking my heart. please help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

so i talked to her pedi topday and they told me to continue with the oxistat cream then to apply aquaphor over that. she said it sounded like she had a yeast infection along with the diaper rash and she's already had 3 meltdowns this morning. im very interested in trying the maalox idea. and im wondering- would the baking soda bath irritate her genitals? how much do i use?

Awww, poor thing! I'd hate to say it, but it may end up happening every time she starts teething! All of my kids would get terrible diaper rashes with every single tooth they cut! It was awful hearing the pain they were in. But, like you, my pediatrician just kept on prescribing stronger diaper rash cream. I know it may be messy, but you could always keep her diaper off as much as possible while she is awake. That's what I've had to do in the past.

Don't use baby wipes, but use a damp warm washcloth. Let her air dry between diapers if possible. I sprinkled baby powder on my son or baking soda on his diaper. When I stopped using the wipes and started using baby powder or baking soda at diaper changes and let him air dry a bit each day he stopped getting diaper rashes.

When he did get a rash, I used the cream for yeast infections. The first time I used it was for a very bad rash like you've described your daughter has. In 24 hours the rash was completely gone.

I never liked diaper creams because they are so thick and hard to wipe off. It takes lots of wiping to get off diaper cream, which just aggrevates the rash.

if your pedi said it was fungal, try foot cream...I know it sounds weird...but it worked for my guy when he has thrush on his bottom after an antiboitic!!

Been there, done that. My daughter went through the same thing when she was about that age. You need to keep up with the rx to help get rid of the fungal/yeast infection. Have you introduced her to yogurt yet? That may also be of benefit and I think you can start that around 7-8 months. The other thing we did and I noticed several others mentioned it here was we actually bought her some toddler panties to get her out of the diapers for awhile and let things breathe down there. It is kind of messy but we just stayed home until she got through the worst of it. We also bought some diaper cream that had a higher concentration of zinc oxide to help kind of coat things up. We caked it on - lots and lots of diaper cream. I also agree about the baby wipes. They can be very irritating. Just a soft paper towel with warm water is the way to go. Best of luck to you. It is so hard to see your little one suffer like that.

This advice was given to me by a nurse and IT WORKS. First, you need to apply an antacid such as Maalox or Mylanta to her bottom using cotton balls. Apply it heavily and allow to air dry. Reason: a rash is caused by the urine or feces "burning" the skin. There is acid in the urine and feces therefore if you use an antacid it will stop the burning and allow the healing. You will notice a HUGE difference by the end of the day. After you apply the antacid and it has dried you can apply a diaper rash cream just to put a bigger barrier there. Be sure to apply the antacid EVERY time you change her so it stays on her. Second, check to see if your wipes contain alcohol. It will burn. Try using something like Pampers Sensitive, which contains NO alcohol.

I used this on my own child and I ran an in-home daycare for 2 years and this works wonders. Best wishes!

I use Destin overnight cream b/c it sticks good and doesn't come off when you put the diaper on. I use it every diaper change weather needed or not for prevention!

Plain, old straight-from-your-kitchen-cupboard corn starch works wonders at healing raw lil bums. Don't use baby wipes on her; use a wet wash cloth. Also, you need to keep her uncovered and exposed to the air as much as possible. Those diapers are horrible during times like this. You may also want to just use an old tshirt on her bottom if you don't have access to cloth diapers til she's cleared up.

Sounds like it might be a stubborn yeast infection. When you are bathing her put some baking soda in the bath water. It helps to ease the pain. Good luck.

I swear by lots of baking soda baths, tons of diaper-free time, and a really thick layer of diaper cream at bedtime when she'll be in a pee pee diaper for hours. Change pee pee diapers often. You can also use a cloth instead of disposable wipes until the rash clears up. There are chemicals (like formaldehyde) and other things (like bleach) in most disposable diapers and wipes that can irritate already sensitive skin.

Don't use baby wipes, but use warm washcloths when you clean her. Let her go diaperless on a towel for a little while.

Good Luck!

Same thing happened to my daughter.

We got some of my husband's undershirts and made them as a diaper. This way it would allow air flow to her bottom.

We made sure she was always dry. So I changed her about every 30 min to an hour. I did not use wipes. I used a wet paper towel.

In order to make sure the urine did not get on any furniture, we had her hang out in her pack n play with a bunch of toys.

Sensitive wipes or just a damp clothe, like cut up an old tshirt and just dampen it w/water. Also, use zinc, which I think butt paste is. Don't just use it for when she has a rash, use it whenever she'll be in a diaper for a long time like nap & bed, to prevent another rash.

When my first was little, she had a HORRIBLE rash. We tried EVERYTHING from fungal foot cream, prescription stuff at $20/oz, corn starch, and even bag balm, meant for cows.

My husband found a product online called Pixav (pronounced "pink salve"). We haven't used anything else on my girls, since.

Sorry to hear about your little one having bad diaper rash. My father says that when I was little I had the same problem so he decided to take my diaper off and let me lay on a mat just in case I had an accident with my diaper off. My dad says that he did this because all the moisture diapers trap can cause rashes and it's good to just let the bottom "air dry" once in a while to clear up and prevent diaper rashes. He says that ever since he started the "air dry" method he says I never got a rash again. I hope this helps....Good Luck :)

get some diaper rash cream and oxistat cream mix together and apply in to her bottom and do not be afraid to apply it. When she have a bowel movement do not use wipes to clean her but use luke warm water with a mild soap and then pat dry then apply cream mixture.

Has she been ill or recently had vaccines? Either can cause the problem. If you are nursing consider what you are eating. If not, some kids have problems with milk based formulas. Also consider what she is eating, she could have food allergies or food sensitivities.

Our oldest had rotavirus (diarrhea for two solid weeks) and horrible diaper rash from it. His pediatrician recommended A&D ointment. We used that in combination with Aveeno soothing oatmeal baths. That really helped to heal things. You might try the Aveeno bath packets to supplement the ointment, even if you get a stronger prescription.

Both of my kids had very sensitive diaper areas too (diaper rash, heat rash, yeast, eczema...you name it). Sometimes the diaper rash would irritate the skin so badly that it would break the skin and bleed. First, find out if it is a yeast infection (fungal) or just regular diaper rash and treat it appropriately. Secondly, blow her bottom off with a blow dryer after a bath (and as often as possible). Let her be without a diaper as much as possible. Lastly, try a natural, chlorine free diaper and start giving her probiotics. You can buy them at any grocery store or pharmacy. Just buy the brand for babies. I used Jarros brand for a long time. If you have a People's Pharmacy in Houston, you might go talk to them about the probiotic (if you are feeling overwhelmed by this idea).
