How long should my 7 month old be sleeping at night? He is up more now than he was when he was a newborn. He used to be such a good sleeper now since he got his first teeth, he hasn't been sleeping through the night. Any suggestions? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have a 3 and 1 year old and at that age and even now they are on the 7:30 or 8pm thru 6am wake times. My kids woke up during the night once maybe twice until they were around a year. They'd tend to wake like this while I was still nuring them, sick, or if they were cutting teeth. I'd say about 10 hours and if the child wakes you can either ignore or check to see what the issue is. Maybe it's just the teeth.

i was told everytime your child crosses another threshold of development their sleep pattern get affected. When my mos got his first teeth, learned to crawl, and walk- he would either not sleep much, or wake often during the night. Hang in there! They grow up fast!

Did he just get bottom teeth or did the top and bottom come together? It may be that he is still teething and working on the top ones if they have not come in yet. Or it may be that he is going through a growth spurt. If it has been going on for quite awhile, you may want to watch him for his sleep signals and try an earlier bedtime. I did this for my son and it has helped him to sleep through the night a lot better. Also, I noticed that he sleeps better now that he is wearing warm, cozy sleepers and only two blankets.

Good luck!

I just saw my pediatrician about my 8 month old who stopped sleeping through the night about a month ago ( she just got her bottom teeth too) She said this a really common age for night waking to increase or start up again because of three developmental factors; teething, separation anxiety (especially needing Mom), and nasal congestion and runny nose that increases at this age. A "normal" night's sleep is any where from 10-12 hours. Did she give me any good solutions to end the waking...not really! (Let her cry). I'm in a baby group with 5 8-10 month olds and only one is sleeping through the night. I know this probably isn't helpful...but at least you know you're not alone.

Our six month old is going through the same thing! We got her on track by letting her cry it out and she would sleep 8-9 hours without waking (when she used to be waking up every 2 hours). Now she is back to waking up every 2-3 hours at night, and we even let her cry for hours but she doesn't give up! I too hope its teeth and that she will go back to sleeping well. It was nice while it lasted! Good luck!
