mama mia! My 7 month old wants to eat EVERYTHING. He is breastfed except for those crunchy cheesy things made by Gerber. Do you think he is too young for those??? He has 2 bottom incisors. I found him eating one that his brother dropped one day and he was so good at it I just kept giving them to him. Only thing is he wants to eat everything, he literally drools and leaps to get at our Big Guy food. Yesterday I found him gnawling on his brothers pizza crust, today while daddy placed him on the floor next to his brothers sandwich he was gnawling on that looking at me like. not to mention all the other things I have pulled out of his mouth as he was gagging and scaring me to death. Ahhhhh! I have never had an exclusively breastfed baby before and I am ok if he wants to wean but ...!!!!he won't eat baby food!!! he hates it. I have tried bananas and carrots for a couple weeks then I went to peas and sweet potatoes and No good. He just doesnt want mushed up stuff in his mouth. I did give him some boiled cubed sweet potato the other day and he seemed to like it at first and then not at all. Anyone else had a baby do this and how did you transition?

What can I do next?

Just because a baby is exclusively breastfed doesn't mean he doesn't need to eat other food!! It just means he doesn't drink formula. Feed the kid what you eat, just make it smaller. My youngest was done with baby food at 8 months and then just ate whatever the rest of us did. And she loved pizza crust :)

Feed him... We have a cousin how has a child who is a large 6 month old.. boy and he had his first food this week.. The video is Sooo, cute.. he was kicking and smiling.. They gave him some rice cereal and then they were giving him apple sauce. He did not spit out any of it! They have been letting him have little tastes of other things and she says he is thrilled..

If he is willing, try giving him small pieces of soft food. Frozen peas and carrots cooked and cooled with no seasoning, frozen bananas.. We used to let our daughter teeth on frozen mini bagles.. She mainly gummed it, but loved it..

No need to stop nursing... tho you may want to check on my past answers about how to stop a biter at the breast. Still continue to nurse him first whenever he shows signs of being hungry and go ahead and do both breasts at each session if you aren't already. Breastmilk should still be his main source of food.

You can try making foods mechanically soft, rather than pureed. That means making them into really small pieces and mushing is together into a thicker paste with some semblance of texture. Pureed has no textures. You may want to try Baby yogurt from Stoneyfield Farm too - is great for tastes and probiotics - which will be helpful if he's going to start eating more solids.

Feed him from the table! He does not need commercial baby food or even pureed baby food. Make sure the pieces are small enough that he will not choke. No need to completely wean, he just needs more than breast milk now.

as long as things are in small enough pieces for him, he can eat bits of whatever's on your plate.

Definitely let him eat other things!
My kids hated baby food. Both of them.
The could smell things and see us eating things that looked nothing like what they were getting and they wanted real food. You don't have to mush everything, but you can give things in small cubes that the baby can put in his own mouth. Soft green beans. Little pieces of toast and cheese. Pizza crust? Just keep an eye on it so when it gets mushy, you can give him another piece to gnaw on.
There are lots of things you can let him have. My kids loved scrambled eggs by this age. And melon.
Fortunately, neither of them have any food allergies and they ate pretty much whatever we ate.
Your little one just might really like food and that's actually a very good thing!

Best wishes!

If he seems to be gumming certain things ok and you are comfortable letting him do it, go for it. I wouldnt give LARGE amounts of anything, but tastes of this and that are fine. Some kids mature faster than others in the eating category. I would just make sure you give him things he cant choke on, he is curious and sounds like he's going to be a great chef one day or LOVE buffets :)

I suggest that you try the baby cereal. Add some fruit juice or baby mashed fruit to it to give it some sweetness. Should fill him up and most babies like it.

Yes - feed him table food. Both of my kids went right to our meals - no babyfood here. Here's a whole world of folks who feed their kids this way - http://www.babyledweaning.com/

No need to stop nursing - mine both nursed past a year and ate table food from 6 months on as well.

BTW - "weaning" means starting solids, not stopping nursing. The meaning has changed in our society, but when academics and researchers talk about weaning they mean beginning solids. HTH!
