7 Month Old with Cough

My seven month old daughter caught a cold from me. She doesn't seem too bothered by it, except for a cough that disturbs her sleep. I'm pretty apprehensive about giving her any kind of cold medicine. What can I give her or do for her that is safe and reliable, and that will help her sleep more comfortably?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I really appreciate it! I ended up buying a cool mist humidifier for her room and it worked wonders! Luckily the cough was really the only symptom she had and it has pretty much cleared up. I think she got her daddy's strong immune system!

I would contact the pediatrician. She may have a bacterial infection and they would be able to give her antibiotics for it which would clear up her cough. If not, they have vicks baby rub which you can put on her chest, which always seems to help or steam from a hot bath or a kitchen sink , lay her around it for about 5-10 minutes and it will help clear her up.

I know my baby girl had the same problem. I don't know if you can prop her matress up with a wedge or pillow underneath to help the drainage, but if you can please try that. I also run a warm humidifier with the vicks vapor steam as close to her bed as possible. I also rubbed true vicks on her chest, a small amt under her nose and if you will put some on the bottoms of her feet and put socks over it, it seems to help. I know I have used all of these everytime by child has problems. We still with this at least every couple of months and it really seems to help. Hope it works for you.

Hello J.,

I've done this w/ then 4year old...(she's 6 now) on a tissue put 5 drops peppermint oil + 3 drops rosemary oil + 2 drops basil oil. put that in the room (where the baby can't get to it. it helps a lot...even grown ups (smile). this worked when cough medicine w/ codeine was NOT working. btw, rosemary oil does not go well w/ people that have high blood pressure. Good luck! ~C.~

We used a cold humidifier. It looks like a cute little puppy dog! They are made to run up to 11 hours so we ran it all night. One night I forgot and he woke me up coughing. When I turned it on, he stopped!

My kids had the same issue.Their Pedi Docter eventually placed them both on the breathing treatments, a nebulizer. It's very safe and it's reliable. They started their treatments between 4-6 months. Now they are 3 and 6,they only need the treatment when they get that cough. It has a lot to with the air, colds and other substances they may be breathing into their lungs.Hope this helps!

steamy bathrooms worked for my babies. I would also put a pillow under the crib mattress to give a bit of of an incline. Roll some blankets and put her to sleep on her side after a warm steamy bath, a tad of vick on the feet, and yes a humidifier. I use the cold steam for every day (my boys have alligies) and the warm steam when they are sick.

J.-

Vicks has this new thing out that is a little machine you plug into the outlet. It comes with these vapor pads that set inside the machine. It warms them all night releasing the vicks vapor into the air. This is nice because you don't have to put vicks ointment directly on your child. I've personally used this for my sleep when recovering from a sinus infection and I was amazed how well it worked. Once you buy the little machine (Target or Walgreens) you can then just buy the refill packets for the pads. Good luck!

One of the ladies recommended a warm mist vaporizer but I wouldn't unless specifically advised by a physician that has seen my child for the cough. My kids and I have allergies that tend to have asthma symptoms kicking in. The beginning of my adult onset asthma occurred more than 20 years ago when I was ill with an upper respiratory infection and cough and wound up in the ER. I had been taking hot baths to try to open things up but the doc said that with what my lungs were doing, that was the worst thing I could do, actually made them close up more. Unless your doc specifically tells you steam as you would with the croup, always stick to a cool mist vaporizer.

Vick's is your friend and while this might not be possible now, something my pediatrician recommended I am never without. It is a cough medicine called Delsym. It is 12 hour, works better than Robitussin or prescription cough meds, and it can be used with adults and children so all you have to do is change the dosage instead of keeping 3-4 cough meds in the house. Also makes traveling much easier.

A humidifier should do wonders. Also vicks, if you can't put in on her I think you can put it in the humidifier or on something close to her. If she can have juice ask if she can have some kind of cranberry juice either straight or mixed, it really helps to clear up the sinuses. I know that a certain cough (it weird but works) cold air is the best thing for it, but ask a Dr. 1st.

My 5 month old has the same thing. She got a cold, and now the cough is still lingering. My 2 year old got the cold as well, his cough seems to be going away. Hers though sounds terrible at night, it sounds like she's choking. I second the vicks on her feet. Our old ped. told me that vick's isn't for babies, but the make baby vicks and he said o ok. I've also been using a humidifier in her room. I didn't get the cool mist kind and that's what the ped. said to get. The humidifier helped when the cold was at it's worse. I think it's just beginning to be that time of year.
Good Luck.

My youngest had a horrible time with colds. We blew a vaporizer right in front of her while she was in a bouncy/back type seat. She even slept in it for several months of her life because we had to deal with such congestion.
Good luck!

Dear J.,

Sorry your little one is not feeling well. I used to five my little girl a hot bath with a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil. Sudafed shower soothers work too but consult your physician to see if they are ok for a child of her age. I think Vicks may have shower soothers as well. Get her to drink lots of water and if the cough is accompanied by a fever it's best you take her to the doctor because it could be a sign of infection. Hope this was helpful and hope your baby gets better.

Sincerely,
A.

Hi,

I'm a first time mom too! I put a pillow UNDERNEATH the crib mattress to elevate the baby's head, and put a COOL mist humidifier in the baby's room. Your baby is too little to add any medications to the mist. This is what my doctor told me. Helps them breathe better and drain easier. Hope this helps!

Hi J., We have always used a clove of garlic and we cruch it a bit and wrap it in a small piece of cloth and put a sock on the babies foot, then put the cloth with the garlic and then put on another sock to hold it in place and do this before you put her down at night and take it off the next day and repeat the next night. The fumes from the garlic will go thru her body and clear up the cold and you need to put a sock on her foot before you put the garlic on it so that the garlic doesn't touch her foot as it will burn her tender skin and the last sock just keeps it in place. We have used this over the years and it works as garlic is a natural anti-bodic. The cold should clear up in a couple of days and I wish you all the best. Ed

You've probably gotten the advice about the Vicks on the feet, but just in case... Rubs Vicks Vapor Rub generously over the soles of her feet, then put socks on. This'll stop the coughing at night. I've tried it on myself and my 2 kids and it really works. I've never done it during the day, though... that may be something you can do then, too???? Good luck! (oh yeah, 7 months isn't too young to do this to her: i asked my doctor about it.)

**HUGS TO YOU & YOUR LITTLE ONE!**
Here's what we do...
+cut out all dairy and as much refined sugars as possible from her diet; add in garlic when we can (but w/o the refined carbs/sugars involved with sauce & pasta!)
+hang out in a steamy shower; the steam helps the breathing passages dilate (and remember a cold is not Bronchiectasis, or asthma for that matter; steam can and does help with a stuffy nose!). Also, the sound of the shower was always so soothing (even for me!) and helped my poor, tired babes relax & get their much-needed sleep
+and as much of that sleep as possible

HTH & your baby girl feels better soon!

P.S. And one more thing, though it's a wordy-recommendation so I stuck it at the end:
+several pinches of sodium ascorbate throughout the day. It's a highly-absorbable, buffered vitamin C (better/different than ester-C); I've purchased it at Central Market, Whole Foods, & online. Make sure it's the sodium, not calcium ascorbate (the calcium might sound better for you, but it's not) & note that it's not the kind of 'bad for you/blood pressure sodium' (that's sodium chloride).
