So here's the deal, my son is turning 7 in a month. We are having five 6-7 year olds and four 3 year olds over (the 3 year olds are his cousin, half brother, brother to one of his friends and neighbor boy).
I can come up with little things to help keep the 3 y/o busy and have plenty of ideas for them but everything I try to come up with for the 7 year olds I hit a wall.
He wants a pirate theme. It's the "friendly looking one" from factory card outlet. I'm going to do a treasure chest pinata. He wants a scavengar hunt with a treasure chest at the end. I was going to start the scavenger hunt by wrapping up the first clue in a small box...in a bigger box...and so on until it's a large box and play like hot potatoe with the gift...If you get the gift you unwrap the next layer.
Its what to put into the treasure chest at the end of the hunt that I'm struggling. I want something that will entertain them for awhile but also be able to use if there is still snow on the ground. (The party is March 13th and currently we have at least 3 foot of snow on the ground and more expected).
At first I thought Nerf guns--they use to make a party pack of 6 guns for $30. Thought that would be the "loot bag". This has been discontinued. I can not find anyone that still has it in stock and could not find it on ebay.
My next thought was the round foam disk shooters. I had bought these from a dollar store or something three years ago. They came in a pack of two guns then with about 100 disk for $5.99. Now the cheapest I have found them for is one gun with 6 disk for $7.99. :( I guess that's not THAT much more than I was planning on spending but the store only had 3 of them in stock and you know you can't count on dollar stores to have enough in by next month.
I'm not all about swords, even the inflatable ones. I don't know why but some how shooting floam or platic things at each other is ok but pretending to stab each other is just not right to me.
My most recent idea is to buy some "stress balls" or the hacky sack balls and just let them play with those however they see fit. But the shooting things COULD be played with in the house as they don't shoot very hard BUT ball throwing can not be done in the house. (Thinking in case of super rainy weather.)
I am open to suggestions here. The party is 2 hours long on a Saturday afternoon, at my home.

would inflatable beachballs work....thinking you could build off the Caribbean theme....we recently had a party for my 6 year old and they loved kicking and batting it around, some started to make goals and took turns shooting on eachother....when they all had them out it kind of turned our basement into a supersized ball crawl. my 7.5 yrs old likes the paddle with ball on a string too. good luck!

Also, since the party will be near St. Patrick's day, maybe you could have them search for a pot of gold i.e. a big bowl of chocolate gold coins?
OK--some ideas. I have a 7 yo boy and he LOVES scavenger hunts. This is how we do them: Hand him a paper as to where to find the next clue (Ex. Look on the top of the big white thing that mom uses to get clothes clean--the washer-- and then put the next clue there and so on. You could have all of the paper clues be like wrapped scrolls. You could even burn the edges to make them look old & authentic. When they use the last clue to find the treasure chest (I'd probably do 10-12 clues all around the house or yard) the treasure chest can contain sacks of those gold foil wrapped coins, inflatable swords, stuffed parrots (small ones), eye patches, hook hands, etc.
Then they can use bags provided by you to make their own goody bags to take home O. each of all of that stuff.
Another game idea--Walk The Plank. Use or rig up some sort of a balance beam and do it as an elimination game.
Do the treasure chest piñata and they can add the piñata candy to their treat bags. You could make a "peg-leg" to use as the Piñara stick.
You could also do a bean bag toss game (boys love that).

I'm getting each kid for my son's 7th birthday (football theme) 6in plastic footballs. Try going to the dollar store they always have good small toys for the kids. Boys would probably like slim,silly putty or something like that. Have fun!!
