7 Year Old Wanting a Violin for Christmas...

Ok...my 7 year old son is wanting a violin for Christmas. Being only 7 I really don't want a real expensive one, but on the other hand I don't want a cheap one either. Does anyone know where I may find one of good quality? My other question is, if he gets one he will begin lessons. Does anyone know of someone in the Burleson/Joshua area that gives lessons? God did not give me talent in the music area... so I need help.

What can I do next?

I don't know of a place for violin lessons in Joshua or Burleson but in Cleburne on HWY 174 There is a place called Vicki Lyn's Music Store. She is a fine Christian and teaches many instruments.

When my son was five he talked about wanting to play the violin, but we put him off for a year thinking it was a whim. We finally got him lessons this past summer after he turned 6. He liked the lessons, but didn't want to practice everyday (no big surprise there).

Here's what we learned: renting a violin from Mr. E's music cost $20 a month. If you plan on playing awhile (or putting it down only to pick it up again or pass it on to siblings), it's cheaper to buy one from crystalcello on amazon.com for $53.98, shipping included. It doesn't come with the strings on, but Arlington Strings in Arlington or Mr. E's in Fort Worth could do it free or for a small charge. Call first and ask. We felt better about having one of our own because the one we rented sells for over $400 and the mere thought of that getting damaged somehow made us paranoid about it. We had a very good experience with lessons through Arlington Heights Strings, I think is the name. (Sorry, my husband is the one who was more involved. He's the muscian in the family.) The office is on Camp Bowie in Fort Worth, though. I have no idea about Burleson/Joshua. However, there is a program out there that I keep hearing about. It's called the Suzuki Method International. We just got a book and cd. It is supposed to be fun and educational. We haven't started it yet, though. (We just finished T-ball.) You could check out the website that is listed in the front of the book (www.internationalsuzuki.org). I hope this helps. I have heard of really cheap group violin lessons through Southwest Christian School, but we have not checked that out yet. H.. M.

Yes !!! I have info for you !! I JUST got done interviewing several violin teachers/schools before deciding on Valerie's Music on Renfro in Burleson. We are taking lessons from Mary Lamb and she ROCKS ! The reason we chose Valerie's is because they have been in business for a LONG time, they teach fiddle & violin both, parents report their services excellent and because they run a small consignment/repair/sales shop at the school. Other parents said this has become a God send as their kids need to replenish Rosin or need a new bow. The prices on the violins are very reasonable, I checked several places before ordering my daughter's from them. (she is 6yo).
I hope this helps. Please let Mary know that M. Stuart referred you and I hope to see you there !

I live in Joshua, but am in Burleson all the time. I am pretty sure there is a place that provides music lessons in old town Burleson. I want to say it's on the street that Bransom's is on, in an older white house. Sorry, that I don't know the name of it, but maybe that will help.
