7Month Old Sleeping Through the Night

I need some advice. My 7mth old was a terrific sleeper until he was sick with pnemonia in September. He is a very happy baby who is easy to put down at night, but since he was sick he wakes around 3am every night. No problem! I get up feed him and within 15-20 minutes he vomits everything he ate. He coughs and coughs which eventually makes him vomit. This never happens during the day when he goes down for naps or after any of his feedings. I took him back to the Dr. last Saturday and they said he just has a little virus. He constantly is grabbing his ears which would make me believe he had an ear infection but the Dr. said no. I don't know what to do for him to help him sleep better at night. Should I avoid the feeding? If I do, he screams constantly....Help Ladies.....

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for responding with such support. It seems he is doing a little better. He is still waking up at night but I have stopped the feedings. I have a little water if he refuses to calm down, which it seems he has been able to keep down. He doesn't seem as restless as he was a few nights ago. I think it may be his teeth, he has the rosy cheeks and is constantly chewing on his hands. I think by avoiding giving him formula during the night has helped the vomiting. The water (2-3oz) seems to be working. I think once he knows I am there he feels better.

This sounds like you might need a second opinion from another doctor. The vomiting sounds suspicious, especially if it's something new. My son (6 mos) grabs his ears all the time, and he's a relatively healthy boy. Good luck. I hope all is well...

We have been going through the same thing!!! My baby was the perfect sleeper, and then he got sick. Then, it seemed like he was getting used to waking up in the middle of the night. I would go back to the doctor too because if he has been coughing for this long he probably should have an antibiotic. My little guy was not eating as well since he was sick, but the formula seemed to make him more mucous-y so at night I was giving him a little watered-down juice. Also, he was getting a lot of teeth all at the same time too which was contributing to the problem. Good luck!

I have a 7 month old and she sleeps through the night, most of the time. We actually stopped her night feedings all together very early on. We can usually get her to go back to sleep without a bottle. Sometimes, if I know she didn't get enough formula during the day I might give her a bottle, but otherwise I don't. We fed my son (now 4) everytime he woke up and he didn't sleep through the night until he was 2 1/2!!! He was so used to waking up for something. I guess I'm trying to stop that from happening this time. I figure, if she can sleep through the night, she really doesn't need the food. I don't know if that would stop the vomiting or not...we rub her head to get her to go back to sleep. Maybe a pacifier would help stop the screaming. Otherwise, maybe just give him some water...then maybe he won't want to wake up for it.

My daughter does spit up A LOT!!!! But she's a happy baby, so we don't think it's reflux.

My son had chronic ear infections and actually had to get tubes in his ears at 15 months. He NEVER acted like he was in pain and never grabbed his ears. I knew he had an ear infection when he got a fever.

Good luck!

Try putting Vaporub on his feet. Not the baby stuff, the regular. I do that with my daughter when she has a cold.

I'm no expert but it seems like if he's been vomiting every night since September, it might be time to get a 2nd opinion from a different doctor. Is he breast fed? I gave up dairy products because they make my son vomit after I breast feed him, and at night he used to cough too.
Poor baby, I hope this gets resolved soon.

My son, who is now 23 months, was always a good sleeper until about 7 months old. He started getting ear infections a lot and would wake up a lot during the night crying. During one of the episodes, I took him to the Dr. and she(not his normal Dr.) told me he just had a virus and no ear infections. Two days later I knew there was still something wrong, so I took him back to the Dr. This time I saw his regular Dr. She said he had an ear infection. I was upset. I said, "He was here 2 days ago and she said he didn't have one and now he does." She said they can come on that fast. He very well could not have had one 2 days ago, but he does now. So, your son could have one now.
My son's ears would hurt when he took a bottle, if he had an ear infection. His ears may hurt so bad that he keeps crying until he makes himself sick. My son has done that before.
My son has always played with his ears and hair since he was little, but I could tell when he had an ear infection. He would pull on them and try to stick his fingers or anything else in his ear.
I'm not saying he does have an ear infection, but I would probably take him back to the Dr. just in case.
I hope everything works out. My son eventually had to have tubes put in his ears after 4 months of constant ear infections. It was scary, but it worked.

Poor kid. If ht was sleeping through (without a 3 AM snack) before, he probably doesn't "need" the meal. And, if it's making him vomit I would avoid it - try sending your husband in to comfort him instead? I would also get a second opinion on this (the vomiting) if it doesn't clear up in a few more days.

Listen to your mother's intuition! If you think something is wrong, it probably is. Get a second opinion from another Dr. It's completely worth it to get your little guy back to his old self!
I've had dr.'s shrug me off, but I stayed on it to see what was bothering my son and I was right. Good luck and let us know what happens.

I would stop the 3 am feedings. My guess is he's not really hungry, just likes the comforting of the bottle. My 8-month-old son has strep and started vomiting in the middle of the night. He doesn't wake up for a bottle anymore, but does take one right before he lays down. Our doctor told us to cut back on the formula (or breastmilk or whatever he gets at 3 am). Milk products will upset a stomach. If you can't get him off the 3 am feeding, maybe try just a little water in the bottle instead, something easier on the stomach.

My 2 year old daughter just had pnemonia and bronchitis. She had the same problems. She would cough and cough then vomit from coughing. Then she would want something to drink in the middle of the night then she would throw everything back up. This lasted for almost a month. I took her took the dr. and they said the same thing it was just a virus. I guess the way I see it is I know vomiting is horrible for little ones but if they can get a little bit of something its better than nothing when it comes to drinks. I would try very watered down juices. Thats helped a bit, for both of us. Her because it kept water in her system me because the mess didn't smell near as bad. I wish I had a majic answer for you I wish someone would of had one for me as well. Hope I helped a bit

Hi K.,

Is he possibly teething? My kids both grabbed at their ears when they were teething. They also had runny noses. My son did develop an ear infection while teething. My doc said they can go hand in hand from all the drainage that occurs while teething, so keep an eye on that.

At 7 mo he probably doesn't "need" the feeding in the middle of the night, especially if he wasn't doing that before he was sick. He might just now be in the routine of that being comforting to him. Good luck!
