8 Month Old Son Suddenly Wanting a Bottle in the Middle of the Night.

I have an 8 month old son that has been a great sleeper until now. I had him sleeping through the night since he was 10 days old. I know he is teething and that can contribute to waking as he did the same thing when he got the bottom 2 (top 2 almost in). However, when he got the bottom 2 he would take medicine and go right back to sleep. I have never rocked him to sleep, gave him a bottle to fall asleep on or anything. He has always done it on his own. But now, all of a sudden he won't calm down until he has a bottle, then I change him and he laughs at me the whole time I change him (and I don't even turn lights on or talk to him) he just giggles and then I put him back in his bed and he talks/giggles for about 10 minutes and goes back to sleep. After he gets about 4 to 5 oz of bottle he doesn't cry at all being back in bed, but I have tried rubbing his back and soothing him while he is still in his crib....that didnt work. I know its a horrible idea to take them out of the crib, but even when I do that and try to calm him down he just screams until the bottle is in his mouth. I know he is not starving to death as he is a very good eater and has plenty of reserves :) haha.

Also, i was curious for opinions and recommendations for more food for my little guy. He does fine with the Gerber puffs and I have given him a few plain noodles here and there (which he isn't thrilled about, but will eat) but i am just trying to get him to eat more finger foods. The only green veggie he likes (baby food) is green beans. I can get him to eat peas occassionally, but he spits them out after a few spoonfuls. Just to give you an idea of his schedule...he wakes up and has oatmeal with a few scoops of prunes in it and some fruit. Then he has a bottle about 2 hours later and goes down for a 2 hour nap. Then he has a veggie and a fruit and then about 2 1/2 hours later a bottle and another nap that lasts around 1 hour. Then he gets up for dinner which is usually veggies and sometimes fruit if he is still hungry or some puffs or yogurt melts and then he has a bath and 2 hours later (sometimes sooner if he is tired) has a bottle and chills with us watching TV for 20 minutes or so and then goes down for the night. Normally he would sleep from 8 till about 7 or 8, but lately he has been getting up anytime from 3 to 5 for his bottle and then sleeps till 8. I am trying to think of other things to give him because like most kids he likes the "orangish" veggies and his little nose and fingers look like they are tinted orange.

Thanks in advance for any advice

So What Happened?

I figured growth spurt might be part of the reason. I do give him the bottle every night because that is the only way he will calm down I just didn't want him to get in that habbit and stick with it. Glad to see someone has had the same thing and had it stop on its own :)...Thanks.

sounds like a growth spurt. i would give him the bottle. my son did that too and i was worried it was teaching him bad habits but after a week or two, he stopped on his own which made me realize he was actually hungry when he woke up. give him a bottle and/or maybe try feeding him a little snack along with his bottle right before bed and that might hold him over longer.

It could be a growth spurt. He is sleeping more? More cranky or tired during the day? He is also ore hungry or eating ore during the day? Babies usually have growth spurt around 6 months and again 9 months, so that could be it!

We went through the same thing with my daughter. We tried everything to try to get her back to sleep without feeding her and nothing worked. The whole house ended up being up for 2-3 hours until she finally cried herself to sleep. After a few nights of this and having to be at work in the morning, I was exhausted and gave in & fed her a small bottle. We were all back in bed & sleeping in about 10 minutes. The nurses at the pediatricians office insisted that I was starting a habit that would result in her needing to eat in the middle of the night forever. The pediatrician himself disagreed and said, "do whatever you need to do so your family can sleep". We followed his advice, the bottles in the night didn't last long (probably a growth spurt) and she does not need to eat during the night now. I would suggest doing whatever works for your family & your baby. Good Luck!!

molars are very painful. I breastfed and my little one woke many times during her molars as nursing is a natural pain reliever. I assume that is what your son is doing as well. Its up to you how you want to parent him when he is in pain.
