8 Week Old with Thrush That Will Not Go Away!

My son had thrush really bad also and the doctor suggested to me to put the Nystantin on a Q-Tip and swab his mouth - that way he wasn't swallowing a lot of the medicine and it worked.

My son has had the same problem but his doctor put him on Diflucan and it has worked great. Also Acidolphilus there is a powder kind that you can get at Medicap Pharmacy off of Falls of the Neuse where the Chick-Fil-A is. It will help with the yeast. Good luck!!

J.... Do you breast feed or bottle feed? If you breast feed then you need to be cleaning the breast before and after each feeding because the thrush will keep coming back because the bacteria lives on the human body.

Buttermilk is what we used on our children years ago. It coats the mouth and the stomach and collects the bacterial infection and then rids it the normal way

Nystatin is harsh on anybody not just babies or kids, but I got garlic oil capsules and poked a hole in it with a needle or pin and then squeezed it into my children's mouth and they liked it (surprisingly) but it really helped, that and the yogurt are the best thing for it. It might hurt his stomach, but I don't think so unless he is really sensitive, but thrush is also very painful. I hope this helps, and I hope he starts feeling better. J. B.

Nystatin worked for us. Are you breast feeding?
If so then you need to treat both your self and your son. Try limiting the amount of sugar you intake. Try Gentian Violet Stain, Diflucan, or Grapefruit seed extract. check out kellymom.com to get more answers about thrush and ways to treat. it. good luck with this.

Ask your pediatrician about genotin violet(probably misspelled). It is purple in color and can stain babies clothes but it use to be great for thrush. Good Luck and God Bless!

Hi J., my son had the thrush when he was a newborn. They gave him Nyastatin (which didn't work) and eventually they had to give him Diflucan. That really worked. I can tell you something else that will help him is a medicine called Gentian Violet. You can buy it for fungus at about any store. It's a really bright purple, like a black light purple, medicine that you paint in there mouth. It looks really bad but it really helps. I promise you this will help lots, you wouldn't believe. I SO agree with the Probiotic that are mentioned below or Asodoyollus! It is what is in yogert but SO MUCH STRONGER! you can got down to health food store and get it in a capsule (it is mixed in Rice flour and can be poured on your breast and then baby latch on. you can put in in the diaper area too. This is what my naturalpathic told me to do. IT WAS THE ONLY THING THAT WORKED. Remember to take some yourself, because if baby has it you have it too. and it could be through the entire digestional track. that is why it is good for both of you to ingest it. Ask your doctor what they think.

Milk of Magnesia is supposed to work. You can put it on with a Q-Tip a few times a day. Make sure that you are not harboring the bacteria as well. I hope it works!

Shame on that doctor....I cant understand why they all think they know so much! Try giving him Grapefruit seed extract. Its natural and it works. You will have to look online on the instructions for usage. Pretty simple and much better than those nasty drugs they are giving these days. Doctors are treating kids like science experiments. I can't see the other responses (new to this!) so maybe someone has already suggested this but the thing to use is Gentian Violet. It's an old remedy that they sell at Health Food stores and some drug stores (call to see if they have it instock). It was used exclusively until the production of antibotics for yeast infections. It's VERY effective, but it stains and if over-used apparently can cause sores. So doctors prefer to prescribe a 10 day dose of antibiotics thinking it's easier on everyone. But of course it's not because YOU have to administer the drugs all day, every day, YOUR kid is pain for several days, AND with antibiotics the infection often comes back and you have to start all over! (that's what happened to us). Then I gave my daughter 2 doses of Gentian Violet (24 hours apart) and that was the end of that. Yes, the inside of her mouth was purple for about 48 hours, but other than that it was a completely painless procedure - and she was much happier!!

By the way, my husband is a doctor and he looked up a study of the effectiveness of Nystatin and Gentian Violet for relieving thrush and guess what - they were BOTH equally effective!! I would still run all this past your own doctor, but now you know you have an option!

When my daughter was a baby she had thrush that didn't respond to Nystatin. We used Gentian Violet. It is available from the pharmacist without a prescription. Just use a q-tip to brush it all over his cheeks and tongue. Also use it on your nipples if you are breast-feeding. Be aware that it will stain ANYTHING it touches a bright purple. (yes, it wears off the skin with time).. one treatment worked wonders for us.

J., I am a nurse, we give out the same med you have tried. however, my sister had the same problem and her doc. mentioned something called (sorry for spelling) gent violet. I think it is over the counter and probable cheaper. I would ask a pharmacist about it. It will stain your baby's face for a while (blue) and your breast if you are breastfeeding. but it worked like a charm. J.

Your Aunt is right... thrush is a form of a yeast infection and one commen way to treat yeast infections is with yogurt. You just need to make sure that the yogurt has "live active culture" or "live culture" on the label. You would follow the directions of the Nystantin, you would just substitute the yogurt for the Nystantin.

Thrush is a form of yeast. It can travel throughtout the body, but loves any warm, dark moist places. It is the same yeast that causes atheletes foot, jock itch, vaginal yeast, diaper rash (many but not all diaper rashes are yeast) and makes bread rise. yeast thrives on sweets. That is why diabetics are more prone to yeast infections, the lactobacillus in yogurt feeds on yeast, therefore yogurt does help eliminate thrush and yeast in all kinds of places. It can hop from person to person and from orofice to orofice. For instance, once my mom got thrush from not rinsing her mouth after using her inhaler, passed it to my baby daughter, who didn't get it in her mouth, but in her diaper area, then I got it vaginally all before I figured out what was going on!
Yeast likes sweet, dislikes acid. Limit all forms of sweet things from your diet, increase citrus fruits and other acidic foods, like tomatoes & vinegar.
* Add vinegar to bath water and rinse cycle when washing clothes, at least any that touch p****** p****, (bra's, undies, diapers) If you don't have a dishwasher, use vinegar in that rinse water too. If using bottles or pacifiers, sterilize (not just wash) them frequently. If breastfeeding, wash nipples with vinegar before and after every nursing. Tea Tree oil is good for killing yeast, but it is too strong to use strait on babies. you can buy tree tree oil toothpaste at health food stores, and put a little on his gums.
Problem is, if he keeps getting it, he must be getting it from something or someone. You must figure out the source and stop the cycle. I hope this helps.

You didn't say if you were breast feeding. If you are you have to put some medicine on your breast to keep your baby and yourself from passing the thrush back and fourth to one another. I am not sure what else if you aren't breast feeding I have only had the thrush happen when breastfeeding by babies. Hope this helps

YES!!!!! Use the Gentian Violet.......and also, the yogurt is working since it contains PROBIOTICS in it which can bring the good flora back into the body while getting rid of the thrush, which is the bad flora!!!!

So, I would continue with the yogurt...preferably an organic yogurt, like YoBaby AND I would put powdered probiotics in the formula or yogurt or anything that I could get into your son; three times a day for at least 90 days!!!!

Go to your nearest Whole Foods or any other decent organic type store and ask for help in getting the strongest probiotic for your son....One I have used for my daughter was called UDO's Choice - Infants's Probiotics....each 1/2 teaspoon has 1 billion good flora in it....so it would be best to use 1/2 teaspoon of powder mixed in formula or food, 3 times per day for your son.

If you are giving him breast milk, YOU should take NATURE'S WAY- Primadophilus Optima for yourself, too.....this is the strongest probiotic that I have been able to locate...it has 35 billion flora per serving....

And avoid anything with sugar, (except the yogurt) since the Thrush will thrive on sugar and continue to grow!

This is the only thing that worked for us when we had to deal with this problem for almost 2 years!

It is my understanding that thrush is an oral overgrowth of yeast. I have treated myself for yeast and also my three year old with a probiotic called fivelac. It is basically just a concentrated version of the healthy bacteria that is found in yogurts and is very effective. Any high quality probiotic should help and can be found in health food stores. Most come in powders or capsules that can be opened and added to milk or baby food. They are tasteless and have no texture when added to liquids. Just don't add it to anything hot. You can google fivelac or probiotics to find more information and dosages. It would be a healthy choice for your whole family! Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

I believe the yogart will help. Your Baby might have to have a blood test to see if all is going well.
Yes the pain is great. I have that trouble with me. I started to eat the yogart and it help allot.

I don't know how to spell it but it sounds like jenjen violet. It is putple and it really gets rid of it, call and leave a message with your dr.and ask him if they still use it. look up thrush and study the cause of it and under what category it is under, I think it is a yeast i am not sure. What you need is Gentian Violet. It's in a little bottle at the drug store out on the regular shelves, and it will be cheap. It's VERY purple. With a Q-tip, paint the inside of your baby's mouth (and your nipples if you breastfeed) for a week or so. Maybe you will need to dilute it just a little for the baby; Google it; directions will be there. This is cheap but messy. This stuff will stain clothes, so don't let it get on anything you care about, but it will work, quick and cheap. I don't know how much I spent on how many medicines before I found this. Our thrush lasted for months before this.

Hi J....thrush is basically a yeast infection that is passed to the baby by the mother during birth, if I remember correctly...you should google that for accuracy...anyhow, the baby will eventually pass it, but it will cause the worst kind of diaper rash if left untreated...my poor baby girl had to lie bottomless for days to recover from it...we chose not to medicate her for it because the doctor said the only reason to do so would be to prevent the diaper rash that may occur as the thrush is passed...well, he should've told us that if we left it untreated our baby's bottom would catch on fire because that's what it looked like...I've never heard of the yogurt, but it makes sense that the bacteria would help.

A couple of things I had to do when my daughter was an infant:
-make sure you sterilize EVERYTHING that goes in the baby's mouth (bottles, pacifiers, any plastic toys)
-when the antibiotics didn't work, we tried the Gentian violet, which turned her mouth purple, but got rid of the thrush with only 1 or 2 applications.

I had twins and one had thrush, besides the medicine which didn't seem as though it was helping much the Doctor asked me if I was boiling the nipples of the bottles long enough to kill the germs. I started paying more attention to that and of course used the same nipples for the one that was sick as not to spread it to the other. I also put alittle of Hydrogenperoxide in the water and with patience it started working. Just alittle tip. Good Luck!

I would try the Nystantin AND the yogurt--but not at the same time. The yogurt might help his stomach feel better. Also, if you're nursing, make sure you coat yourself with Lotrimin cream. You guys could be passing it back and forth.

Be consistent! My youngest had thrush and it took about three months for it to clear up for good. Good luck!

Are you nursing? When my daughter got thrush they treated both of us so that we would not give it back and forth to each other. You can have a yeast infection on your nipples. Although if you did I am pretty sure you would know it. Boy does that hurt!!! :) If you have not been treated maybe that is why her keeps getting it. Hope he feels better soon!

My daughter had thrush at about the same age and we used Nystantin to clear it up. (The doctor never told me it was h*** o* the stomach and she didn't seem to have any problems handling it.) But if it is causing your son pain, have you considered trying the yogurt and Nystantin together? The Nystantin might do the best job of clearing up the infection, but the yogurt might help soothe his stomach.

when my oldest got thrush he was on nystatin, and it upset his stomach too. his dr. gave him something for his belly. Thrush is really hard to get rid of he had it for like 3 months. you need to sterlize EVERYTHING everytime right befor he uses it including the nystatin dropper. Also take a clean wash cloth or a finger tooth brush and wash his mouth everytime befor and after he eats, and befro you put the nystatin in his mouth.
I don't see how yogurt can help as thrush is a yeast infection and yogurt is made with yeast, I would think that that would make it worse, I would take him back to the dr. if it is not clearing up and to get him something for his little belly. good luck

If you are breast feeding make sure to clean your breast after every feeding and put lotrimin cream on it to treat any yeast on your skin. If you are bottle feeding make sure to sterilize the nipples after every feeding to keep the nipples clean. The goal is to not re-introduce the yeast while treating the baby. Good luck!!

There is a product on the market that is very old, but works wonders on thrush. Ask you doctor about gentain violet (the spelling may be a little off). This product stains their mouths purple, and they do look like a scene from the exorcist for a few days, but this product works, and it works quickly. The purple in the product stains the mouth and covers the thrush; thus causing the yeast to stop multiplying. It's messy, but it is the only thing that worked on two of my children.

You've gotten a TON of advice so I"ll try to be brief.

Tips I learned from fighting off a monster 3 mo long thrush infection:
1) Swab his mouth via Qtip with the Nystatin. Easier on his stomach and stretches the medicine. BUT use a clean swab every time you dip or you contaminate the meds and have to start all over with a new bottle.
2) Some strains of thrush have become Nystatin-resistant. These get better for a little while and then come rushing back. The Gentian Violet might be particulary good in these cases.
3) Swab with the Violet, too. Cuts down on the mess.
4) The Violet stains aren't permenant. Daub some rubbing alcohol on them and wash like usual. They come right out.
5) If it's a night treatment, do it while he's in the tub. No clothes to get it on that way.
6) (If you're a nursing pair) It's possible for one of you to be asymptomatic. (For us, I had symptoms and baby didn't.) You have to treat both to cure the thrush.
7) Our strain happened to be resistant to both the Nystatin and Violet. It didn't resolve until I'd (through much begging) convinced a doctor to write me two weeks worth of Diflucan 200 mg daily.

When my oldest daughter was an infant she had trush. We used the Nystantin as well, but it kept reoccurring. Are you breastfeeding? The reason why I am asking is because for me, we were passing it back and forth for weeks and didn't realize it. I knew that my nipples were cracked and sore, but I assumed it was from breastfeeding. I finally went to the daughter for me due to the pain and we realized that I was infected on the nipples from her. We cured me and when I was cured, we stopped breastfeeding at that time. Not that you need to stop feeding, it was just time for us to stop.
There is also another natural medication out that I have heard some of my friends use. I don't remember the name, but it is purple. It is a liquid that you put on your nipples before the child breastfeeds. It is very messy, though.
So first piece of advice, check to make sure that you aren't infected and second, research the purple stuff. Sorry that I don't know the name.

Hello J., I definitely can relate to your situation. My son had thrush and I was breastfeeding. I am not sure if your brestfeeding or you are bottle feeding but anyway their is this natural medication called gentin violet.You take a q-tip and dip in the medicine and swap your babys mouth with it. The good thing is that it doesn't upset your babys stomach but the bad thing is it turns thier mouth purple but atleast you will get rid of the thrush. You best chances of finding this medicine is at an old school pharmacy and it is affordable too. Just make sure that they wear a bib when using this medicine as I said before it is messy if they are drooling or teething watch out for the clothing. They maynot like the taste but it works. If they give you a hard time just slide the q-tip on the side of their mouth and it will get the job done.

I've only had one child get thrush & that was about 20 years ago so I don't recall what method we used but I do recall it being from a doctor. But he was also in a day care & I had to act quickly. Also, if you are nursing you need to be treated as well because the thrush can infect your nipples & you'll keep passing it back & forth between you. So you can't just treat him alone if you're nursing, could be why he continues to have it.

Where does he have it? Are you breastfeeding? And if you are, are you treating yourself also? My little one had it when she was little too, and we both had to use Nystatin. And even on it we passed it back and forth a few times before we were rid of it. Also you need to make sure that all the things he touches, eats from, etc. are getting really clean EVERY time he uses them. Thrush is usually really quick to go away, and just as quick to come back so you may have to be anal about it for a little while.

Are you nursing? or bottle feeding? If nursing you may want to treat your breast for thrush you may just be passing it back and forth. If you are using bottles sterilize everything he puts in his mouth at the end of the day. Does he have it in his mouth or on his tush or both?

When I had my daughter she had terrible thrush mouth and tush. for the tush I would "air" her out during the day no diaper just let her lay on a towel. For her mouth I would swipe her mouth with yogurt after every feeding. For my breast I would "air" out at night and put yogurt on after every feeding. This seemed to take care of it.

I used the nystatin and also used the yoghurt as my doctor recommended. I'm sorry your little ones tummy gets upset with the medication. I hear the yoghurt alone will take longer to get rid of the thrush (if it is successful) than the medication. Maybe you can try both at the same time and baby's tummy might not hurt so much. Bless your heart. I was readin' your post and read it to my husband cause we knew exactly what you're goin' thru. My son, Colt, is now 11 months old as of today :), but he was around 2 months old when he got it and the doc put him on that Nystatin too. He would cry and be soo dang irritable, he was just the most pitifull lil' baby. Well, like you said , it got a lil' bit better, but it would come right back. As far as feedin' the baby yogurt, I don't really know about that cause what thrush is is where the milk has laid on the tongue and basically just collected there. Its a yeast itself. Well yogurt is also a yeast if I ain't mistaken.
Long story short, Colt kept gettin' that thrush time and time again. The doc put him on a different kind of medicine. It made it go away a whole lot quicker, but still would come back. He was about 8 months old and got a really bad diaper rash and I had to take him to urgent care. It came from the thrush. Me and my husband got to thinkin'. We wandered if it came from his milk. Sure enough we changed his milk from Lactosefree Enfamil which always seemed to hurt his tummy to Gentlease Enfamil. Within a week we could tell a difference. The thrush went away, his tummy stopped hurtin, he started to sleep better and is now the happy lil' baby he should've been in the beginnin'. There's just somethin' about GENTLEASE ENFAMIL that worked like a miracle, thanks to the good Lord above.

If you're nursing, you need to be treating yourself as well, or your baby will just get it back from you again. You also need to sanitize pacifiers, toys, and anything else that goes in your baby's mouth.

Also, I would strongly suggest using an over-the-counter medication called Genetian Violet. It is available at most pharmacies. You may have to ask the pharmacist, because sometimes they keep it behind the pharmacy counter. I guess because it's somewhat expensive? Anyway, it's WELL worth it.

When my baby and I had thrush, I noticed big improvement after just one dose. And the baby doesn't even have to actually swallow it. You just "paint" the inside of their mouth with it. Now be careful, because it will stain clothing for sure. I always put a big old bib on my baby when we used it.

My son also had thrush as a newborn.Months went by using Nystatin before I finally got rid of it.GENTIAN VIOLET was the solution.It is natural and found in pharmacies.My pediatrician is the one who recommended it.It is a antifungal agent also used for female yeast infections.I had to rub it on his tongue and all over the inside of his mouth.It will stain his clothes purple,so he will have to wear a permanent bib for awhile.Basically,don't put on his Sunday outfit while using this product.Ask your doctor about it, and they will tell you how often to put it on him a day.It takes a few weeks,but was well worth it.Also,boil in hot water all his bottles,nipples,and pacifiers.Its a real pain to deal with,but it will pass.Good luck.

Are you breastfeeding? If you are you need to treat your breasts. If you are not doing that he is getting it from them. If you are bottle feeding then get all new nipples for yuor bottles.

I probably would not give your baby yogurt as he is only 8 weeks old. You wouldn't want him to develop allergy. My son and I passed thrush back and forth while breastfeeding for months. The only thing that worked was Diflucan, oral suspension for him and pills for me (if you are breastfeeding--take the medication at the same time as him!). Diflucan is approved for babies starting at 6 weeks. Yes, it can be h*** o* their tummies but my son (who was a spitter, had reflux, etc) did fine on it. Plus, it is only temporary and it was the only medication that got rid of it once and for all. We had already tried gention violet and Nystatin. I also discovered through my research that Nystatin is only effective in 50% of cases these days due to the yeast becomming resistant to medications. Yeast, like bacteria with antibiotics, can become resistant. Definitely talk to your doctor. Good luck!

Hi J.....thrush is horrible, both my kids had it. my son worse then my daughter. my first question is...are you breastfeeding? if so, has the doctor given you medicine? there is a medicine to put on your breast so that when your son eats, you dont pass it back and forth. also making sure bottles are sterilized every time helps...but w/ 2 kids i understand how that can be hard sometimes. the mds were harsh on my son too, but it was the best thing i could find. ijust tried to keep him fed and happy, to deal w/ the effects. well hope this helps, and good luck =)

I certainly relate to you in this. One of my children had thrush that was not in his mouth, but started at the diaper area and covered his entire body, face and all! It was dreadful. Is there another doctor you could take him to? It's been so long ago for my son that I can't remember what we did for him other than keep him naked as much as possible. The doctor had me dry him gently with a blow dryer every time I changed him.

We have used an apple cider vinegar wash, a red raspberry leaf tea wash, probiotics, fresh air on the nipples, cutting out all sugar and dairy in my diet, coconut oil and tea tree oil, gentian violet, and grapefruit seed extract, but not all at the same time! I have had thrush with two different children.

hello find a man who is the seventh son of the seventh son and have him blow in your sons mouth. or find man or woman who never saw their father alive and have them blow in his mouth. i know it sounds strange but it does work my mom found someone we and they did it for my son.

Sounds like what this little fellow needed was a probiotics. Good bacteria put back in his gut. See antibiotic takes all the good and bad bacteria. Your gut needs the good bacteria to digest food and have a happy belly. Perhaps go to the health food store and ask about collidal silver (nature's anitibiotic but also does so much more... read about it: http://www.theolivebranch.com/news/silver.htm

There is an awesome website www.kellymom.com that has several articles by a Dr. with different treatments for thrush among other things. The one I've tried and it seemed to work is an over the counter solution called Gentian Violet. It's a messy process (it's purple), but it seemed to do the trick. If you've tried everything else, it may be good to try it as a last resort....just be prepared for a baby with purple lips :)

My daughter got a never ending case of thrush at about 3 months and I also fed her some yogurt. I went with the YoBaby brand and it did seem to help (and she loved it). I was worried because she wasn't eating solids yet, but she did great and the doctor was the one who suggested it. It didn't "cure" the thrush, but it seemed to make it go faster when used in conjunction with the Nystatin. She was also a reflux, collicky baby and the yogurt seemed to calm her tummy.

Thrush is like a yeast infection. If you are nursing, stop eating sugar, anything fermented and anything with yeast in it.
If he is taking a formula, he probably will need a sugar free formula. Yogurt can help. But it should be sugar and fruit free. If he has a thrush rash in the diaper area he might benefit from clotrimazol cream ointment but ask your doctor first since he is so young. Garlic can also be helpful. There is a book called an Extraordinary Power to Heal by Bruce Semon MD., Ph.D. and Lori Kornblum. If you call the Wisconsin Institute of nutrition you can order the book, or you can just talk to them about your baby and your problem with giving him Nystantin. I don't know whether this will help or not, my daughter had thrush and she was alittle bit older, but what the peditirican that she saw did was take malalox and mixed it with liquid bendryl, and half and half, and then I had to put it on a q -tip and rub it on the inside of her mouth until it cleared up, it worked, and I did that after she ate, and once before she went to bed. I assure you it didn't taste very well, but it did work.

Have you checked into Web md and see what they suggest for treatment.

I don't know if you are breastfeeding or not but if you are then you need to make sure to treat yourself too. If you don't you and your son will just continue to pass it back and forth between the two of you.

I used Nystatin on my breasts and a vinegar/water rinse after each feeding when we encountered thrush early on.

I a a mother of 3( 1 son and 2 daughters) and grandmother to
5(one boy and 4 girls).
When my grandbabies had thrush I went to the drug store and had them order a bottle of Gension( not sure of spelling)
violet. They got it in the next day and we used it and the problem was gone within a few days.
You just use a swab and coat the entire inside of their mouths
gums and all with it. WARNING , it is dark purple and will stain everything they drool on so use old clothes etc while using it. It will make their mouths etc look very purple but
did not make them sick.
We had the same problem with the script meds, made them so sick etc.
We got ours through CVS but any drugstore should be able to get it for you.

the best thing i found for thrush is an over the counter treatment called... gentian violet. if your pharmacy doesn't carry it they can order it and have it in within about 24 hours. it can be very messy, it tastes horrible, but it works very well. you just soak a q-tip in it for a second then put it in your son's mouth, until the inside of him mouth turns purple. it will stain anything it gets on so make sure he has on something you don't care about it getting stained.

My kids got thrush when they were babies. It is actually a yeast infection in the mouth. And believe it or not, as an adult when I was on an antibiotic I also got it. The doctor gave me the same medication, but I thought I only rinsed my mouth with it. The yogurt will actually help (although I am not sure how good it is for your new born- you may want to check with your doctor). It has active bacteria in it which will help with the imbalance of acid/ph in your child's system. You may want to check with your pharmacist, I have found that they are actually more help than the doctors. Good luck.

If you are bottle feeding soak the nipples in vinegar then wash then this kills some sort of thrush thing.... Im not sure what but it worked for my itty bitty when she had Horrible thrush. Also use a q tip to apply the med not just let him drink it. I know easier said then done!

well this is coming from my mother that uses some of the old wives tales you hear. have someone that has NEVER EVER met their father blow in his mouth. my mom had my uncle do it to me when i was an infant and said it was gone the next day.

Treat yourself for yeast if you are breastfeeding. Try gentian violet. Where is the yeast? Diaper area, under the neck? Use antifungal cream on his skin, instead of orally. Please email me. A. ____@____.com
