My son has two bottom teeth that he is grinding against his new top teeth. It sounds painful. Should I be concerned for his dental health this early?

What can I do next?

My son did the same thing and the dentist said not to worry about it until he was around 9 years old. He now has adult teeth in the front and does not do it as much. (He only did it at night or when he was sleeping)
He did not damage his baby teeth or his adult teeth. Hope this helps!!

he's just getting used to these new things in his mouth and found out they make funny noises together! my husband said not to worry (he's a dentist)... but i always did when both my girls started doing it. it doesn't last long (every set of new teeth have to be tried out against the others!). hope it helps & God bless!

My boys did that and I asked his dentist about it and he told me that grinding teeth is normal and it helps to get baby teeth loose. My boys started early too. I think it is part of teething. As they grow older it sounds even worse but i was told not to worry so, I supposed they knew what they were talking about because not they are much older and doing well.

My son did this for several months. The ped said not to worry about it that is was normal and would stop...it did. I think it was more nerve racking for me (couln't stand the sound). My son did not seem phased by it.

Hi~
It's probably just something that he CAN do that he COULDN'T do before he had teeth -- a new phenomenon! LOL I think about all babies do that. He only has his front incisors, right? If they're older and grind their back teeth in their sleep, that's when to ask a professional about it.

I think that it is probably other teeth under the surface working its way through the gum and it is just painful right now and that is his way of dealing with it is chomping down. I think you will see it stop after they all come in. In the mean time, give him some tylenol before bedtime and see if that doesn't settle him down and take the pain away.

My little girl just got her two top teeth in in the last week and a half and has started doing this, too! It is like nails on a chalkboard to me! But from the responses, it sounds like it is normal. I just hope she will stop soon... eek!

It's so bizarre- isn't it!! My daughter does the same thing and I reached out to mamasource not too long ago. Most of the responses I received said that their dentists thought it would probably go away on it's own. Either when the second teeth came in or by their 6th or 7th b-day. Both my husband and I grind- so we'll see if it actually goes away when she's older- I hope so!

Both of my boys did this, the oldest more than the youngest. He even had a few tiny chipped spots. There's really not much you can do for it when they are that young. I would tell him to stop and sometimes he would. It was really frustrating. Their dentist asked on the first visit if they grind their teeth. Thankfully, it didn't affect the health of those teeth. Luckily, they outgrew it and lost(are losing) their baby teeth.

My two year old grinds his teeth and we took him to the dentist to ask them (it drives me crazy) and they said that he is so young and his jaw bones aren't strong enought to cause any damage to his teeth or anything else. They also said it is very common and most kids grow out of it.
