My personal favorite is Vicks. A very small amount rubbed on the front of the chest before he goes to sleep. If that is not enough, I would use a very small amount of the back up top across from the chest area in front. I hope this helps.
Lately my son is very congested at night. He also has nasal drainage so bad at night that he wakes up with a face covered in dried snot! I have tried xopenex (nebulizer) and benedryl like my pedi suggested but it doesn't seem to help any. He is completely congestion/drainage free during the day as well as at nap time. Any suggestions?
Turns out it was an ear infection that was causing all this....3 peditricans and 2 specialists later, we figured it out. A weeks worth of antibiotics and he was back to normal.

Hi K.,
A detox of your home would keep the irritants at bay. Especially changing out your laundry detergent to a non toxic one. I can recommend one if you like. If you go shopping make sure you determine that the product is non-toxic for humans and not just the environment. Labeling is a bear to get through but if you know what you are looking for it makes it easier. A vaporizer will help if there are no toxins in the air. Toxins do outgas so they need to be limited.
Detoxing can be very simple and will be good for the entire family as well. My family doesn't get sick anymore because our immune systems are so strong. Detoxing can also be inexpensive. I'll be glad to tell you what I did if you decide you want to do it.
God bless,
M.
are you giving him cow's milk? formula? www.notmilk.com
Could be allergies. Take all stuffed animals, carpet and books out of his room. Only vacuum in the am since it stirs up dust. He might have allergies to dairy and wheat. Try NAET allergy elimination, NAET.com Also DO NOT give Benydryl to a developing brain. It changes the chemicals and can lead to delays. Another thing to look at is maybe he has acid reflux at night that can be treated naturally. Good luck playing detective. Use the humidifier though and saline solution in his nose every diaper change so you keep his ears free of congestion which can lead to auditory processing problems and speech delays later on.
I would get a humidifier and have it in the room with him. It sounds like its to dry in his room. Or get a vaporizer, one that you can put liquid vapor into it.
It sounds like he is getting allergies and a vaporizer/steamer would work very well for him. Its just because he is lying in so many different positions while sleeping the night through that he gets congested. I think you can buy a vaporizor for approx. $40.00 and then buy the medicated liquid to pour into it.
As well, have you changed your laundry detergent or dryer sheets lately? If not and you may be hanging the clothes on the clothes line it could have alot to do with pollen flying through the air. He definetly sounds like allergies to me. I wish you the best for you and your son. Good Luck!!
You might be keeping it to cold at night b/c my bay started that and she ended up w/ croupe which is a "seal like" cough and its like having a kink in yurr throat
Tis the season for allergies right now.
How about warm mist humidifier with eucalyptus oil at night?
Lots of saline spray to keep things flowing rather than getting stuffy at night.
A crib wedge to keep little heads elevated?
A lot of things can cause the congestion. Try a vaporizer in his room at night. This might help.
Is he teething? It could be something in the room where he is sleeping causing it. I would try putting him in a different room to sleep for a few nights and see if it is better or worse. Is his mattress new or old? There are so many things that can cuase the congestion. I would consider maybe taking him to a different doctor for a second opinion. Does he sleep with stuffed animals? They can carry germs, dander, etc...
Use all free and clear kind of detergents and no fabric softener sheets.
Run a plain cool mist humidifier in his room at night. Get it going with the door closed about an hour before bedtime.
Prop up the head of his crib on phone books or blocks and it will help with the congestion a bit.
Poor little guy. Hope this is better soon for you.
try one of the traiminic fans. They are like the vics plug ins, but no need to plug it in and worry about something catching on fire (that's my biggest fear). It might help to keep him dry throughout the night. You can get them at any store.
What is he eating? Sounds like his body doesn't like what ever his is eating.
Maybe a chiropractor should check him out- Int'l Chiropractic Pediatric Assn can give you a referral.
best, k
