Mustela has a shampoo for babies with cradle cap. After using it for a week, my son's was completely gone! Good luck!
I think I may have seen this question before, but could not find it. I was just wondering if anyone had any good suggestions for what to do with a 9 year old that has cradle cap. I don't really want to put vaseline in her hair because I think I will have a hard time getting it out. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Carrie, here is a weird old home remedy. After you have washed her hair Rinse it good with some listerine. not the mint but the old fashioned yellow colored stuff. it smells mediciny. I know it sounds awful but I had to do this to my daughter's head for years. It works. after you have rinsed it and worked it into the scalp rinse it really really good. you shouldn't have to do it very many times. it will soften the cradle cap up and then you can wash it away as you wash her hair. good luck

Hi Carrie,
Cradle Cap is a sympton of candida, an overgrowth of yeast in the system. Depending on the intensity of it, it could also be a sympton of leaky gut. I'd recommend poking around on the Body Ecology Website. www.bodyecology.com
I would suggest taking all foods out of your daughter's diet that will feed the yeast, especially sugar (even natural-stick to green apples and blueberries), and gluten/breads and absolutely no processed foods or soy unless its miso or edamame. I would also recommend getting her on a pro-biotic asap. We use Renew Life Flora Bear chewables, but I'm not sure what age that goes up to. You can check out the body ecology for more info. about candidia. Any medication you put on her will just treat the sympton of the deeper rooted problem.
My son broke out with cradle cap when he was about 3 months old. We've had tons of problems with asthma, food allergies and sensitivities since. I wish I would have known then what I know now! I hope all that helps!

Bert's baby Bees Baby oil ( you can find it in Target in the baby aisle). I used it on my daughter when she had cradle cap as an infant and it was great. It washes totally out and left her hair soft. I poured some in her hair and took a comb to gentle lift the flakes off of her head- she loved as it probably felt like a massage.
Good Luck!
I googled this.. it seems to have good advise. They don't advise on vaseline or baby oil though. Tea tree oil, olive oil and other, more natural products or I even saw a post for (probably not a natural product) "Neutrogena T-Sal"

I found some stuff on Mamasource, in the archives but it was more for babies.
Good luck.
According to Adelle Davis, author of Let's Have Healthy Children, in babies cradle cap is a symptom of a B-vitamin deficiency. I suspect that the same could be true of a 9 yr old as well.
My suggestion is for you to eliminate all sources of caffeine from his diet, if he has any (coffee, tea, sodas, chocolate, medications, etc), because caffeine destroys B-vitamins.
I also suggest that he start taking some kind of multi-vitamin with breakfast. The children's multi-vitamins that you can get from a health food store would probably have higher levels of the B-vitamins than those found in grocery stores or mainstream drug stores.
If he already takes a multi-vitamin with around at least 10 mg of the various B-vitamins, you could try adding a B-complex vitamin with his lunch. You can see more about what Adelle Davis says about the Bs on this website page (scroll down)....
http://home.mindspring.com/~djsnjones/id1.html
Just FYI, it is best to not take any B-vitamins after 3 pm. If taken before 3 pm, they can help with sleep, but if taken after 3 pm they can interfere with sleep.
I also suggest that you get a copy of Adelle Davis's book from your local public library. It is old, so if they don't have it you can ask them to try to find a copy for you through inter-library loan.
Best wishes,
J.
I have a shampoo that works very well. It's actually a baby shampoo from Shaklee. If you are interested I can tell you where to find it. E-mail me at ____@____.com
Make sure she is rinsing her hair well. Sometimes that can cause it to flake. You can use olive oil.
cradle cap is a fungus infection on the scalp. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/0...
Try baby oil on her hair over night. In the morning you should be able to comb it right out. Worked for us.
When my babies had this, I used a comb to try to get the flakes off then used head & shoulders, which worked for my daughter, but not my son, I ended up using lotion. You might try a good leave-in conditioner after shampooing with a dandruff shampoo.
Good luck!

My 3 yr old daughter had cradle cap, my doctor told me to use Head and Shoulders shampoo, so I did and after awhile it went away.
I hate to say this, but are you sure it is cradle cap? This is what they term for newborns...sounds like it may be dandruff...dandruff is a sign of bacterial overgrowth in the body. What we eat comes through in our skin, hair, shows up on our nails, etc. the outside of the body is tells a story about the inside of the body. Dandruff typically is a result of bad fats, meaning not enough extra virgin olive oils, coconut oils, flax oils, raw nuts, avocados, hummus and too much sugar in the diet, dairy is a big one. Look at the child's diet and see what the LOVE to eat...it is the foods we LOVE to eat are the foods our bodies tend to reject.
Also make sure they are getting some Children's DHA and good quality children's vitamins (Flinstones don't count) along with vitamin D3, next doc's appt, ask to get their blood levels tested. You can see my article on that on my family health column. Which I'll post below my signature.
With all of that said, tea tree oil is going to work best. Jason's naturals is ranked good and a shampoo with tea tree oil is ok, but straigh tea tree oil-TTO is ideal. If you'd like to purchase a healthier shampoo with TTO Giovanni shampoo and conditioner with TTO and is a decent brand, you can buy both TTO and Giovanni online at www.vitacost.com

try gentle naturals which can be found at Target for Cradle Cap. It comes in a green bottle by the baby shampoo area which has baby disney characters on it.... good luck
Olive oil. Massage Extra Virgin Olive Oil on the scalp and let sit for 15 minutes or so and then shampoo. If the scalp is really scaly, it will loosen up during the shampoo, so you can lightly brush the scales off. Next, put a little olive oil on after you wash the hair. It looks oily at first, but it soaks right in. It takes a few days, but it will start to clear up. My aunt has 5 children and that what she told me to do for my baby and it worked like a charm.
Try using either Selsun Blue(not sure how to spell product) or Head and Shoulders. Wet the hair, work up a good lather and use a soft nail brush on the scalp to work up the spots and rinse. If you choose an oil method use baby oil, with the nail brush(this is a plastic very soft bristle brush or a baby brush) work in the oil, then brush the area to work the areas loose then shampoo with a clarifying shampoo, then condition with a kids conditioner.
Hi Carrie Take your son to see his peditrican and can advise you on the best treatment for it.
